While the authority of the source is dubious, MyNintendoNews just posted about an alleged rumor that Retro's new game is a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing that it is working on with Monster Games: http://mynintendonews.com/2014/07/10/new-diddy-kong-racing-2-...
I don't really think that it's true, but assuming for purposes of argument that it is I do not feel that this is a good move because (1) it would steal Mario Kart 8's thunder; (2) further dilute the racing genre on the Wii U; and (3) draw resources better spent on games Nintendo needs more of for the Wii U (i.e., rpg, strategy).
There are some new directions in which Nintendo can take the racing genre, but I rather they do so in the form of dlc for Mario Kart 8, rather than a new racing game.
So let me pick apart these reasons of yours for not wanting this:
1) It won't make MK8 do any worse than MK64 or MKDS did. Those also had to compete with DKR games, but even then, this game wouldn't likely be out for a year or two, so the MK8 thunder would've long subsided by this point. (At least, as much as Mario Kart thunder ever subsides.)
2) Wat? There are two kart racing games on the Wii U. No more. And one of them is a third-party multiplat. What's this "further dilute?" I guess, yeah, but three kart racing games from three completely different franchises (and three different developers, while we're at it) in just as many years isn't a problem in the slightest. Or maybe we should start complaining about all the 2D platformers, arcade fighters, and FPSs on the system while we're at it? Heck, the Wii U got more open world games in one year than it has kart racers since launch. Your argument isn't just invalid, it's fractally wrong.
3) RPGs and strategy? You mean two genres that Retro hasn't ever worked with and has given us no reason to think they know how to make? Besides that, it'd be pulling a small team to consult on characters and probably work on models and animations. Monster Games would handle pretty much everything else, aside from publishing, which will obvious be Nintendo's job.
So my thoughts? I would absolutely adore this game, if it came to the Wii U. I'm not expecting it or even watching Retro to see if they tip their hand, but if it turns out I'm wrong and this in fact is real, this time, I will not only jump for joy, I will go pre-order it on the spot.
My take, if even considered real, is that this is a solid move. With a 2016 release date, your not crowding MK8, and as is, the system is pretty void of any racers regardless of the sub-genre. Plus this would give an excuse to push out more Amibo's, and lastly, the game is pretty much guaranteed to be a hot seller.
Being Retro, you know this game would bleed quality, betting my money it would be equal or superior to the rock solid MK8, sure, I would rather see a new F-Zero, but I would love a new DKR as well, and it probably has a wider mass appeal.
I loved both on my N64. I prefered actually racing in Diddy Kong, MK64 was a blast in VS Arena though. I would definitely like to see another (quality) Diddy Kong Racer down the line, I don't think I need it now. What I would like to get now is an Battle Arena DLC for MK8 asap.
There were rumors back in 2012/early 2013 that were dead certain that Retro was making Metroid Prime 4, which turned out to be completely false. I take any rumor involving Retro with a massive grain of salt.

Not to mention Diddy Kong Racing came out less than a year after MK64 and the latter more than doubled the sales of the former.
I don't care if you like Diddy Kong or not, I think DKR was the best racing game for the N64. It somehow managed to be an awesome mix of adventure and racing, the boss fights were some of the best on the N64. The characters were pretty cool, too. I'd really like to see this happen again. I wonder if Nintendo has rights to all the characters, aside from Conker..
I'm cautiously optimistic about this happening. Leaning more towards no though.
I'm okay with it, but will defiinitely not be getting it at least until there's a discount. With MK8 just released though I think it's too early for another racer and espeically one that plays similar to mk8. I'd rather have f-zero.

The rumor said 2016 for DKR, that's more than enough time to give MK8 breathing room IMO.
