We received a tip from an EA intern with some very interesting information pertaining to the Wii U’s online system. Our source, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that her information comes from a network engineer whom she is friends with. As with all news from anonymous sources, it’s difficult to determine its authenticity. But what we received sounds plausible and even explains Peter Moore’s relentless excitement for the Wii U. It’s no secret that EA are helping Nintendo develop the Wii U’s online service. It will allegedly offer voice- and video-chatting support, leaderboards, and detailed friend lists that tell you who’s online and what they’re playing. The service aims to offer greater flexibility to publishers than Xbox Live, and EA . From our source: Many publishers are happy with Xbox Live’s features, but they aren’t happy with how strict Microsoft’s guidelines are. Nintendo went with an open flexible approach with online because when Nintendo asked developers/publishers what they wanted in an online service, that was the number one thing they asked for. But interestingly, EA are supposedly in talks with Nintendo to try and make Origin, their digital games distribution platform, a key element of Nintendo’s online strategy, too. EA would have the chance to bring Origin to the console space and win many new users while Nintendo see it “as an opportunity to rebuild relationships with Western gamers because they feel that only a massive western company such as EA nderstands what is needed to make an online service attractive to western gamers.” According to our source, EA isn’t the only company looking into bringing its digital distribution platform to the Wii U – Valve, too, are interested in getting Steam onto it. But EA are “aggressively persuading Nintendo to go Origins exclusive with Wii U’s online so they can gain a competitive advantage over Steam.” Our informant doesn’t know how Origin on the Wii U will differ from Origin on the PC, if at all. But if these talks about making it a fundamental part of the Wii U are really happening, it’s no surprise that Peter Moore is one of the most enthused Wii U developers out there.
Steam or Origin, This could be good. Hopefully the rumor that nintendo will have some Wii U news next month is true.

This could be true. Before E3 there was the rumor that Valve would Handle it. That turned to nothing but nintendo saying they were getting outside help. Then during that Same E3 Ubisoft shows major support with a PC game with always online features.
There was articles about a Origin/Major EA support when EA came on stage to talk about the wii U. Take that with Peter Moore visting kyoto last month.
Im not really that worried about the Wii U support as i once was.

Ideally what will happen is that all the publishers will be allowed their own system, but everything would tie back into a main Nintendo account for achievements and so on. One log in for everything, but pubs are free to run their service how they want.

Again, I'm going to say that I called it on this rumor. As for actually contributing discussion value, I really hope that Nintendo doesn't go Origin-exclusive or anything-exclusive as their only means of online distribution. While I worship the (digital) ground that Steam walks on, I know that's most likely going to be another hurdle that people don't want to jump over when it comes to playing games online.

I'd love Steam support. EA Origin is actually allowing other third party games on their service like Capcom, Ubisoft and Square-Enix. I haven't messed with origin at all, so I can't say if it's bad or anything. But I do love Steam's structure more than any platform out there.
Currently playing: 3DS: KI: Uprising Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles "Heh, heh... Thanks... You're nice. Umm... Can I ask... a question? Your friends... What kind of... people are they? I wonder... Do these people... think of you...as a friend?"
If this is true, EA could seriously soar in terms of stocks. Having an entire platform solely supporting it as an online service could bring in some serious dough. Actually, I would prefer Origin. Why? EA has more money than Valve. More money = Better service. Of course, this could mean fees; but I'm okay with that if it rivals Xbox LIVE or surpasses it.
Best thread ever

@moomoo Sorry, but money doesn't always equal a better service. Valve has crafted one of the best online services I've ever used, and frankly, EA probably made Origin just so they could get more money than they were getting from Steam.
while i experince steam and only heard and read alittle bit about orgins and love the sales of steam i should know thats not exactly what they mean by outside help right? if we could get a service like steam that would be great
orgins would be fine too i guess, it doesnt entirely matter to me but for the love of god dont go charging for online mp but if that ends up being the worst case scenario it better be damn fair cheap price but nintendo should be in control of that
so what does this mean for nintendo related games though will it be on another service or will they stil use thier own store for the vc games n wiiware n other stuff etc ?
Wii U exclusively using EA's Origin for online = no buying the Wii U for me. It's not worth all the hassle that comes with EA's Origin. I've not heard 1 good thing about that service since its inception.
In fact, I feel so strongly against it, if Sony or Microsoft actually ended up adopted Origin support, I'll just stop purchasing console games altogether and I buy a ton of console games.
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
Well, I hope there isn't any monthly fees. I think Steam is a better platform/service than Xbox Live. Plus, Nintendo doesn't like that idea of monthly fees so I hope it stays like that. If 3DS doesn't have online monthly fees, then I don't think WiiU will less the developer, like EA wants their game to.

You couldn't get away with any paid online service for handhelds. In all honestly I expect nintendo to be the only next-gen console not to charge for online, You think after seeing the killing Microsoft made with live gold they won't do the same.
