Topic: RPGs on the U?

Are there any RPGs on the Wii U? I've looked around and it seems like maybe there isn't? What are some good games I can play that scratch that itch? Even if they aren't RPGs, I'd like to play something I can spend some time with that isn't based around playing the same "stages" over and over to find all the secrets or get the best times. A lot of the big first party stuff thus far have been games that are pretty arcade-y and great in short bursts. Any ideas?

(I already have Monster Hunter)

For RPGs I'd say Child of Light. It's a great RPG.

Unfortunately i really don't think there are any RPGs on wiiu. The only two that come to mine that have some RPG elements besides monster hunter are mass effect 3 and deus ex

Well, it's pretty dry on RPGs, not counting VC.

But as for other games, are we talking just exclusives? Because there are plenty of games that aren't in "stages" that you play over and over, but you may have already played them on another platform.

Darksiders II
Batman: Arkham City and Origins
Assassin's Creed III and IV
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
Resident Evil: Revelations

But if you're going for exclusives, there's Wonderful 101, ZombiU, and Wind Waker HD.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Well I don't know if you'd consider this an RPG but, it has some RPG elements in it: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It's a bit linear but, you can make decisions that can effect gameplay and ending, plus play styles, stealth or guns-a-blazing. Despite how old it is now, if you haven't played it, definitely get Mass Effect 3. Great RPG game. It also fills you into the events of the past two games if you haven't played them either. Earthbound's a good one too. Golden Sun, Mario and Luigi, and Harvest Moon are all RPG games that got great ratings on the eShop though personally I haven't played them. Though, there's a ton coming to the Wii U later this year and next year, especially in the indie department. Xenoblade Chronicles X in 2015.

Hopefully Xenoblade Chronicles X and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem will start the trend of more and more JRPGS for Wii U

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

To my knowledge, you basically have two choices:

  • Child of Light
  • Mass Effect 3

I'm not a fan of ME3, but Child of Light is fantastic.

If you are looking for an RPG and haven't played Golden Sun before you could try that. It is a GBA VC game but it is playable on Wii U. The Wii U is the first place I got to play Golden Sun, owned it for GBA but never got around to it, and it is fantastic.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I just finished Deus Ex and that was pretty good. Not a true RPG per se, but it has certain RPG elements (leveling up to perks/skills, side quests, etc). I also just finished Breath of Fire II on Virtual Console. It's a little hard to recommend because the localization is terrible and it's a little grind intensive (like classic Dragon Quest) but it has a special place for me because of a good story (that somehow shines through the terrible localization) and colorful characters/great sprite design. One of those few games that should be elevated up with FFVI and Chrono Trigger...if only it didn't have the negatives I mentioned T_T.

I just started playing Earthbound as well. I like it so far, but it's hard for me to get into games that have a rabid hipster following. It has an amazing, original vibe/atmosphere so far that I've never seen in any other game. Might be worth looking into.

Personally, I'm looking forward to playing Golden Sun, Child of Light, and Advance Wars, based on what people have recommended here.

I also REALLY excited for the release of Breath of Fire I (FINALLY) and Xenoblade Chronicles X (looks better than any JRPG announced so far...on ANY system).

Child of Light is good. I'm currently on my second playthrough, actually. Then there are GBA VC RPG games like Golden Sun, Mega Man Network, and Mario & Luigi. You can't really go wrong with any of those, and if you haven't played ME3 or Deus Ex, you might as well play them.

EDIT: Oh ya, then there is Earthbound and Breath of Fire II. It mainly VC RPGs for now...

This is a thing? I'm well aware of Earthbound... but rapid hipster followings of videogames? Wha? Maybe I don't know what a hipster is anymore.

Apparently Earthbound is one of the best RPGs out there.

I'm currently playing it on the Wii U VC and it's fun. Or it would be fun if I was in the fifth grade.

Hopefully not. JRPGs are archaic, predictable, and are overshadowed by the sheer flexibility and progression of WRPGs.

I think lots of the worst parts of JRPG's has carried over to modern WRPG's. (Grinding - Not enough content).

Still think Ultima VII is even after all this time what WRPG's should be like. (The nice graphics obviously are better in new games but the mechanics I think still are about as good as any).

Opinions broham (or sisham), everyone has em.
Some people like JRPGs, and want more em. Your preference is not supreme, but still feel free to express it.

I like JRPGs just much as any other RPG. What makes games like Earthbound and Persona 1-4 good are not the focus openness (if you are expecting them to be open, you're going to be disappointed), but instead the focus on story and characters. Earthbound (and by extension Mother 3) is wacky adventure filled with strangeness, the game mechanics are simple and well stream lined, but you're not playing for that. You're playing for the story and for the characters, enjoying their journey and emotional joy ride (especially Mother 3). I expect my explanation won't change my mind if you already seem to prefer WRPGs, but I still felt like explaining why someone might enjoy them.

Critique away at why I'm a horrible person.

I don't want to jinx it but I think Xenoblade X could end up being the big RPG of this generation. The gameplay in its Wii predecessor was fantastic and pretty much turned what would normally be grinding into fun gameplay and there was so much to do that I would completely avoid in other games.

In the meantime I am slowly working my way through the VC RPG collection. Uncharted Waters has been my biggest time sink. It's a bit grindy if you don't follow the main plot lines but is definitely a more satisfying pirate game than the Sid Meier's Pirates remake despite having a woeful naval combat system. I am still on the fence as to whether I shoulg get Golden Sun or Mario and Luigi as my next.....

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

I find Earthbound to be among the most overrated games I've ever played. Compared to games of its own time like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, it's incredibly archaic. Found the story uninteresting, too. Felt like it was just a bunch of setpieces with little narrative holding it together.

Child of Light and Deus Ex are the way to go. If you're willing to go into Wii mode, get Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3 (6 in reality) on VC and Xenoblade, since it's the best JRPG of that generation.

I would suggest going into Wii Mode on your Wii U and downloading from the Wii Shop Channel the following games:

Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Chrono Trigger
Paper Mario.
Super Mario RPG

Enjoy~

Still blows my mind that all of those combined are less than the price of a new retail game. So much entertainment in that list.

I hope Nintendo will see that they do need some good RPG titles for their console. They are relying too much on 3rd party and the older games. I would love to see a hardcore exclusive Nintendo RPG title. That will be a systemseller!
