Hardware sales:

Untitled

Wii U sold 14k units in the week before Super Mario 3D World came in.

Now it's selling almost 50k and Mario, after a sluggish start, sold more in the 3rd week than it did in the 2nd week.

Wii U needs software. This may not sum up everything, but at least in Americas and Japan it'll sell if it receives software on a regular basis, even if 90% of these come from Nintendo.

Those numbers are looking good. Nintendo got 3/4 of total hardware sales, that's pretty amazing

Sorry to once again be negative but these are still poor numbers. Big improvement on a month ago, but those are still the numbers of a struggling console. People refer to the 3DS slow start but it was doing 40k a week in June 2011, just before the big price drop. Those numbers frightened Nintendo into making a huge decision to cut the price so early, but now similar numbers (and right before Christmas too) are apparently a sign of the Wii U being a success :s. Not saying it won't, as I really can't see much that will make the Japanese buy a PS4 anytime soon, but just had to point out the craziness of celebrating these figures.

Yeah, because constantly improving sales does not mean jack crap..

This is what I've been saying all along. Wii U needs a steady stream of good games in order to steadily do better.

Nintendo knows this and has known this. Nintendo's philosophy is "software sells hardware." Nintendo was hoping that a lot of their games would come out much earlier than it did / is going to. Nintendo had never made games for an HD platform before they were surprised by how much work it took. So, yeah, Nintendo's aware of that and they're doing all that they can to remedy the situation.

Well Dragon Quest X version 2 did come out, and that's a far bigger system seller than Mario is in Japan. It will be intrestng to see how the Wii U and DQX does after the holiday season. This is the country where people by systems just to play Dragon Quest so its no real wonder that it would be in the top three spots. Now the question is if DQX being an online game is enough to keep people on the systems, as well as get other people wanting to play early next year to build up momentum.

I wonder if were going to see an onslaught of DQ in the west next year.

WAT!

That's not what @Peach64 is saying at all. S/he was just adding perspective. A lot of good points in that short post.

While its true the sales are improving @Peach64 was being pretty on the mark. We clearly didn't see a jump in sales or hardware when Mario 3D world came out, but we just saw a nice little jump to go alongside the Dragon Quest X expansion. These numbers could fall dramatically very quickly especially with Nintendo not having any follow up software ready for the Wii U until late next year.

Hey, I hate to be a buzzkill, but it's crazy to be happy about these numbers when as many as 20% of the adult population suffers from Irritable bowel syndrome.

Late next year? DKC:TF is in February. MK8 is in Spring. Smash is possibly going to be the first half of next year, maybe later. But still, how is that not having in software ready until late next year? We don't even know what all Nintendo will be releasing next year.

I meant on the RPG front, should have been a bit more clear. Its easy enough to attribute Wii U's big jump this week to the release of Dragon Quest X. Now Nintendo needs some RPG goodness fast, but the only other first party games won't be ready till late next year at the earliest. I guess they could get Genuis Sonority to work on something for the Wii U.

This is not an all new Dragon Quest, and Mario had (in its first week) and will have better sales than the Square-Enix RPG. Mario sold more this week than the week before, and saying that this is simply x-mas magic doesn't make sense when every other title that released in the same period saw a big drop in its numbers (check FFXIII-3 sales). I think Mario is the rare kind of game that was nor receiving much hype in Japan but after people played they realized it was beyond their expectations. Being closer to the 2D series is something helpful in that market and maybe people realized that just when they had the chance to try the game.

This is a combination made of great bundles, Super Mario 3D World, Dragon Quest X and algo December sales. None of these can explain alone this improvement.

Next week Monster Hunter Frontier will be released for the Wii U, and while it doesn't even come close to the impact made by the main MH series (especially portable versions) it should do something like Dragon Quest did.

These sales are better than the Gamecube sales in the same holiday season in 2002, when the GCN had already gotten Smash Bros, Mario 3D, Metroid and was a week from Wind Waker's launch. Comparing with the Gamecube may not make a winner, but it's good to see that NINTENDO IS DOOMED AND WILL NEED TO KILL THE WII U talk was, like always, BS.
