Hi everyone My first post on here, so please accept my apologies for any sentences that don't quite make sense
I have been a Nintendo fan for many years, my first Nintendo console was the snes with super mario world bundled in which I got preowned, from which I got many years of gaming joy with the likes of starwing, mario, yoshis island, terranigma and secret of mana, donkey kong country one and two and many more. I followed Nintendo for the rest of my gaming life till now experiencing the n64 and GameCube and their titles through to the wii u and 3ds currently.
I was rooting through some boxes in my house a few days ago (bit of a hoarder lol) and came across the box for my n64, turning it over to the back and looking at the games advertised on the back of the box, I looked at all the titles and each one was a triple A title and still as playable today as then, mario 64, lylatwars, mario kart 64, wave race, pilot wings are a testament in game design and got me to wondering about the future and what it holds with the wii u.
My preorder has been down since the wii u release date conference and I am so excited about getting my hands on nintendos next system. I got to wondering about the future and what ninteno will do with this new tech, will we finally see a new starfox and fzero? Will this be the best system yet? I certainly have plenty to tide me over till release date (xenoblade chronicles lol) what are you guys thoughts?
Thank goodness someone said it, I'm not the only one thinking this then. I just never said it because I'd get a whole stack of contradicting replies from people saying why I'm wrong or right or whatever.
Even gold comes with its fair share of impurities.
Though I can't say I'm impressed by the games I've seen on it so far, the Wii U certainly seems to have a lot of potential. There's one thing that troubles me, though. A lot of third-party support with titles previously unavailable on Nintendo consoles will open up new [gaming] pathways on the new hardware. But, will that be enough for N. to push forward not only sales wise but also in an innovative sense? The use of the tabl-oid controller will undoubtedly be fun, will it be enough though? I'm hoping that this kind of third party support will not end up being a double-edged blade for N. They must not rest on their laurels for one misstep can cost alot, what with all the other gaming alternatives out there.
I also think it's high time they showed us something new. I'm not saying that a new Starfox or Zelda or whatnot would be bad, I'm only saying that, as they themselves have said, they need to provide the gaming community with new, innovative ideas. The latter does not necessarily only apply to gimmicks and fancy control methods, but also to new gaming concepts. That is what the gaming scene expects from Nintendo. Not just HD graphics.
The Wii U has big shoes to fill, owing not only to its predecessor's success, but also to big and bold statements from the big guys at N.
I'm waiting.

Nicely put yeah you are right it would be great to see nintendo develop some new ip's as well as the return of some old faces! The support from third partys is looking promising, and as long as that doesent turn into a shovelware fest ala carnival games (apologies to anyone who enjoyed that game) etc, it could provide a steady flow of quality titles all year round with, hopefully, fairly regular smatterings of stellar first party Nintendo titles that will blow our minds
My personal feeling is that the "Golden Age" is in the past. Maybe it is an age thing (I'm 31) or maybe because video games were in their "adolescent phase" back in the 90's and things to me felt so new, fresh, and exciting all mixed in with a ton of surprises. The late 80's and early to mid 90's were the Golden age of gaming that will no be replicated. I don't get that wow factor anymore because my expectations are so high. Maybe the Wii U will help change that? Am I incredibly excited for the Wii U? Yes I am. Do I think we will see a new F-Zero and Starfox? Yes I do. I think Nintendo is really motivated to make the whole Wii U experience very, very exciting.

Yeah certainly hoping Nintendo are looking at making an amazing experience for their long term fans as well as newcomers. I certainly feel the same way about the "old days" of Nintendo gaming having just turned 30 myself (what happened to my 20's lol) I have extremely fond memories of gaming growing up on Nintendo hardware. Seeing my son now getting really the same buzz out of games like ocarina of time on completing dungeons as I did, has really just impressed on me even more how timeless great games can be, and I feel when a game becomes more than a game, but an experience that etches itself on your memory is where the magic is, and certainly I feel it will continue to be with Nintendo being one of the main sources of these experiences that last a lifetime!

It's the perfect console for us to see a balance of major reboots of popular franchises, old and new, (the successful reboot of Kid Icarus on 3DS may be a good hint) and a fresh innovation of new IPs.
I'm quite impressed with the strong launch/launch window line-up of 50+ games the Wii U's got itself (I think this could even be considered the strongest line-up in console history), and right now, it's looking to be a good beginning for the console. Positively, seeing as Nintendo have jumped the gun and started the next generation of consoles estimated about a year earlier, they'll desparately need something to show for it at E3 2013 as not to have the Wii U overshadowed by the alleged PS4/Xbox 720. So, it's a pretty strong assumption that that is when Nintendo will bring out their big guns - a new Mario, Metroid and Zelda adventure as well as acclaimed retro re-boots (F-Zero etc.) and maybe a new IP or two - that might unveil the Wii U as the re-invention of the gold era, as well as pioneering exceptional use of their own hardware in those games (the GamePad especially), and many other developers will follow suit. After all, who would know their own consoles better than Nintendo?

Yeah the launch line up is pretty impressive, a good variety of titles, with a solid line up going forward to q1 2013. I certainly agree that a lot of the big hitters will be saved for e3 2013, and I feel that it will be the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to unveil a line up of upcoming titles that will be impossible to ignore, as you said

It's hard to tell what people look back on most fondly in the future. For all we know in ten years time there might be a love of the Wii in the same way people love the SNES. Very well made point skywake . Yeah it's hard to imagine some of the staggeringly good quality games on the wii, fading from memory. Mario galaxy 1&2, twilight princess, skyward sword, metroid 3 (and of course the trilogy as a whole, although 1 and 2 being updated GameCube titles I feel still count due to their epicness lol), xenoblade chronicles, donkey kong country returns, smash bros brawl to name but a few are prime examples of what made the wii such a great Nintendo console to own and appreciate
i'm not too sure about the golden ages of the NES and the super nintendo and genesis/megadrive eras. for me, those were the best periods of gaming, ever, and i very much doubt we'll see anything of that magnitude ever again.
but with the wii U, i am very optimistic and encouraged so far, especially when it comes to third party games. it seems to me that some of the developers have realised that hardware of the wii U will not be that much of an issue compared to the wii and so i expect more quality third party games out. i think nintendo has to look forwards instead of backwards, i don't think the wii U success will match what the NES and super nintendo achieved but insofar as the wii, it has a mighty task, because it is currently the second biggest selling console behind the DS. yet with mario, zelda, metroid etc they have what sony and microsoft do not have- and that is a huge number of quality I.Ps and franchises.
the gamecube was relatively good, better than N64 in my opinion, but nintendo games were few and far between and there wasn't enough third party support; wii's success is mainly due to nintendo's franchises but also for casual titles such as just dance. the wii U at least has to bridge that gap between the gamecube and wii, in terms of software but moreso the quality of games has to be more like the N.E.S's or super nintendo's.
the wii U is a window of opportunity for third party developers to take advantage of the hardware and develop and make games around it; for years, people said the wii was under-powered, that it didn't have the graphical capabilities of the PS3, 360. now the wii U is here, developers have no excuse this time round over lack of power. should there be a repeat of them releasing AAA titles for sony's and microsoft's successors to the PS3, 360 and none for the wii U, then frankly, wii U and nintendo fans will make our voices heard and those companies will feel the brunt of criticism.
