Fine then. I'll agree with the possibility of Metroid, but I think Starfox would appeal to a wider audience than Metroid would because of talking animals being the main characters, which Nintendo would probably want more so.
It's still a core title, but it's easier to get more people to like than Metroid, IMO.
A Metroid game could be in development by ANY of Nintendo's teams.
I think Retro could be making Starfox, but Metroid would be being made by a different Nintendo team.
So even by my thinking, Retro wouldn't be making Metroid, and Miyamoto would be supervising a Metroid project with one the EAD teams. You still get Metroid, but not by Retro.
Obviously this is speculation, but Metroid doesn't have to be made by Retro to exist. Team Ninja proved that, with mixed thoughts, but we got a Metroid game never the less.

This is my opinion
I think these 4 games have a chance
And there probabilities of happening
Metroid Prime 4 (10%)
Eternal Darkness (20%)
F-Zero (30%)
Star Fox (40%)

I hope its not an F-zero. The Wii U has enough racers. We dont need Mario Kart and F-zero along with third party racers on it.

In my book they should keep mario kart on hand-helds if they start doing F-zero

How is talking animals supposed to attract "Harcore" gamers. Talking animals are generally perceived as childish and un"hardcore". Playing as a intergalactic bounty hunter would sound much more appealing than a talking animal to your "hardcore" gamer.

I'm talking about appealing to casual gamers. A core gamer already knows Starfox has firefights, explosives(w/o blood of course), and dogfights. Besides, how is talking animals not hardcore? There's tons of media with talking animals.
Talking animals would appeal more to other audiences. Hardcore gamers already know what the game is about. A game doesn't have to have blood and be realistic to be hardcore.
You fight locust(lizard bug things) in Gears of War, Halo has aliens, Parapa the Rapper, Sly Cooper, etc.
If you play any of those, I have no clue why you would ever say talking animals is not hardcore.

The thing is that Nintendo has absolutely all the franchises it needs to apeal to the casual masses (Mario, Wario, Kirby, Miis, Animal Crossing, Yoshi, etc.), but it currently has a difficency in titles that appeal to "hardcore" gamers who largely don't take Nintendo that seriously right now.

@Tainy
We've already had Metroid Prime 3, Trilogy, and Other M on Wii. Metroid has had it's time to appeal to core gamers. If hardcore gamers weren't willing to buy a console for any of Nintendo's IPs last gen, why would they for Wii U?
As far as I'm concerned, Uncharted, PS Battle Royal, etc. rated T games were able to appeal to a more casual gamers by ditching the M rating.
Metroid will not continue attracting people that didn't play it on Wii, just because of better graphics. I'm sure Metroid will show up on Wii U eventually, but it won't be from Retro Studios.
The hardcore should already want Wii U. Just because people are bitching that it's not hardcore enough is an opinion.
We have Injustice, Tekken, ZombiU, Sonic Racing, Mario. WTF, I consider those hardcore games.
Sly Cooper and Fox McCloud are on the same level of maturity, but Fox has a gun. Yahoo, automatically way mature.
I want a Starfox game way more than a Metroid game. Just go play Metroid on Wii or VC. The games are still there, while Starfox is not.

EDIT: Well, there's Starfox 64 on VC and 3DS, but my point is that there's more Metroid games in recent times than Starfox.
It would make more sense for them use a 'rested' IP, and I personally want it that way anyway.
Seriously, Starfox fills the gap between core and casual gamers. Even Halo on Xbox 360 got played by kids, so calm the heck down about Wii U needing a hardcore game.

F-Zero is way different from Mario Kart though.

Ya know what? I'm actually starting to have a feeling that it might be the new 3D Mario game!!

Ya, that's a better way to word my wall of text. I guess kids are 'hardcore' gamers since 50% of the online community on Xbox Live is children, whether the game is rated M, T, or E.
People are gonna play games they like. End of story. I'm just saying it would make more wense for Starfox to show up over Metroid, IMO.

A hardcore person is one who doesnt put up with bulldoodoo. Y'all keep talking about hardcore but the audience you should be referring to are dedicated gamers.

Yeah F-Zero is way different from mario in that its a pure adrenaline rush racer about speed and tight control, which is really a different kind of fun from Mario kart, but we dont need two nintendo sponsored racers showing up on the Wii U. They ought to develop a wider array of things with that time frame. They can make an F-zero when there is a game drought

Yeah I agree I don't really want F-Zero also I don't see shooters like battlefield and cod as hardcore personally I think Mario and Zelda are a lot more hardcore compared to cod it takes a lot more skill to beat them and master them then it does to master call of duty......

It's not F-zero. It's a big adventure like game with bosses. This has been confirmed! And no Eternal Darkness 2 either.
Possibilities are Metroid, 3D Donkey Kong. Star Fox, Banjo kazooie or a new ip. The most possble of these are clearly Star Fox or Metroid. If you look at rumours, everything before E3 2012 pointed at a Star Fox, and everything after at a Metroid. The thing is, because some members wanted to work on a Star Fox and because the series didn't get much love, people immediately thought Retro Studios would revive Star Fox. That's it. Miyamoto would like to see Metroid and Star Fox, and like some of you pointed out, he talked about Metroid like it's in development. We will get a Star Fox, but Metroid will come first. Platinum games are extremly interested in making a Star Fox. They still talk about it. Would they do that if Retro were making a huge revival of Star fox alongside a new engine?

Wow thanks for the comment that's awesome I would love to see a star fox in the near future Nintendo has some really great companies and it gets me so excited and idk if we can see a new banjo kazooie do Nintendo have the rights or rare?

Thanks man! I'm beyond excited for this project too. There was a rumour about Nintendo talking with Microsoft about buying the rights to Rare series. The source even suggested that a Banjo Kazooie was deep in development at Retro Studios! I don't believe it. There's a small chance, but this is the only time I've seen anyone saying it. All this, new engine, weather system, bosses can point at many old Nintendo franchises. Lately, people talk about Metroid.

This has the job descriptions rounded up and some useful and useless speculation.

That was a really good read I would love to see a new banjo kazooie game so much I wish rare was a first party developer for Nintendo and banjo kazooie was just like every other series Mario, Zelda, Metroid and that we expect a new game or two on each console that comes out and as much as I like Metroid I can wait I don't want another one straight away a brand new ip sounds awesome hopefully we will get to see some things on it around e3 on one of the Nintendo directs! but changing weather and particle effets I just don't know what game would have that I could only guess pikmin 3 but there not working on that.

Hardcore is generally used as a term which is the opposite of casual. Casual games are considered light gaming experiences that anyone can enjoy, including people new to games or who don't regularly play games (e.g. Wii Fit, Wii Sports). Hardcore would be games that are more in-depth and tend to be desired by people who regularly play videogames. I'd agree with you that Zelda is a hardcore title, but obviously Battlefield and COD games are as well. Hardcore doesn't mean difficult or challenging, it's just a term that means "for real gamers". Obviously there's no such thing as a real gamer, so it is a silly term. And there are grey areas. I'm not suggesting it's useful. But it doesn't mean difficult. Battlefield and COD qualify.

Glad you liked it. The old Rare back with Nintendo would be a dream. I want a new Metroid now far more than Star Fox. Perhaps because it's what the Wii U needs and there's still so much potential. Retro's eye for detail is astonishing. I can't imagine how good it would look. I'd still say this http://wiiuturn.com/2013/02/huge-wii-u-rumor-thats-probably-t... and the miiverse "hack" are indicators for a Metroid. Nintendo will go all out this June.
