This is based on a response from emailing Nintendo about it, as I had not heard anything regarding it since it was unveiled and I wanted to know (apologies if this had already been disclosed).
This is exciting news imo. While it seems that Wii U games will have to include them on a game-to-game basis (much like the Classics and Pro controllers), the adapter is going to be compatible with Wii mode and any Wii game that has GC controller support. From this, it sounds like it will include not just your typical Wii games, but also Wiiware and VC titles.
One thing I should have asked alongside this was if both connections needed to be plugged into the Wii U, or if it was more like a Y-cable, having a data and power plug.

Gamepad: the main controller that all games use on the Wii U (not Wii tho)
Controller Pro: an alternative for some games
Wii remote: another alternative and the main Wii control +Nunchuk: Not independent of wii remote so it's not really separate
Classic Controller: discontinued, but supported due to wii mode
Gamecube controller: an option for those who preferred it
So...this is a mess?

You're leaving out the VC compatibility which is where things get messy. I apologize if I am incorrect with some information below as it's confusing and its ridiculous how many controllers are involved here:
Gamepad: The main controller for all Wii U games. Can be used with Wii as a off-tv display, but requires a Wii remote pointed at it (that's right folks, point your controller at another controller) in order to play Wii games.
Pro Controller: Very nice alternative to the Gamepad, but is only compatible with some games.Does not work for Wii or Wii VC.
Wii remote: Compatible with some Wii U games, all Wii games, and some Wii VC games, but no Wii U VC games.
Wii Classic Controller: Does not work for any Wii U games or Wii U VC, but is required for certain Wii VC titles. Is discontinued and expensive now,
Gamecube controller: Will work for one Wii U game (at this point), Smash, will work for some Wii games and some Wii VC games (but not all).
If that's not a mess, I don't know what it is. It certainly isn't efficient or simple by any means.
For comparison's sake:
Playstation - Dualshock 4 works with ALL games on PS4 and PS3. ALL GAMES. Well sheesh that's pretty simple isn't it? Makes it pretty easy to know what you need to buy to play the games you want, right?
I'm not breaking down Xboner's controls here because I simply don't care, but I'm pretty sure it's just one controller option per console release.
I can't help but feeling this is more a post for Neogaf, IGN, or Gamefaqs...lol.
I don't like that Nintendo has so many controllers, but most of them are great (except N64...). "Xboner" also has good controllers...Playstacy (I can do it too, hurhur) has the worst IMO. I'm glad you can use it for EVERY game. A bad controller for every game sounds divine!!!11...I'm just trolling now lol. The Playstation isn't even really that bad. Still the worst though IMO.
gage_wolf: There are some mistakes. Wii Classic Controller works on all Wii U VC games (other than DS for obvious reasons). I've tested it on NES, SNES and GBA games. Wiimote works on Wii U VC too, at least on NES and SNES games. GameCube controller works on every VC game but I believe it might have some problems in Mega Drive/Genesis games due to button placement and they kind of solved that issue with Wii U since you can map your buttons in VC games.
It's its, not it's.

I'll give you that, mate. I find it awkward. My Wii Mode would be getting more use otherwise.
Before anyone says it, I do realise that it would defeat the purpose of motion and pointer controls if it were otherwise. Doesn't make it less awkward.

I really hope the support service have the right info, even if this must be true. It would be a crime to make those gamecube controllers and not update the Wii U for allow the use of those controllers with Wii games that allowed them as option.
On a side note, I'm also impressed by how useful and polite Joy Roy (and in general the Nintendo america's support service) was, that's how you reply to a customer! (And it was even a reply about a product still not released).
I once contacted the italian support service of another game company (-cough- Bandai-Namco -cough-) and they were not even able to tell me anything about a running promotion of a game they already released >___>;;;
Don't forget the fightpad on the list of options. Will plug into a Wiimote and look like a Gamecube controller but has all the buttons to make it a classic controller pro, more than GC controller (ZL and ZR shoulder vs just Z). http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/lscreen/255529_440x350.jpg
Best Buy's listing for this adapter mentions that it will also work in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
I hope it's recognized as a Classic Controller instead of a GameCube controller. Much wider compatibility that way since many Wii games supported the Classic Controller, but not the GameCube controller. And only one went the other way with GameCube support and no Classic Controller support (Metal Slug Anthology).
Ideally, every game that supported one would've supported the other as well on the Wii, but I bet only around 50%, if that much, did. Not much better these days on the Wii U with Classic Controller & Pro Controller support.

I like the rumble support myself, but maybe that is just me.
