Maybe things changed and no one informed me but I am pretty sure you can not back up Wii U saves natively with out homebrew.

As far as I know:
1. your save game exists on either internal memory or external storage
2. to back up to external storage you have to format entire drive to Wii U proprietary format making it unusable for anything else. This means you can't copy them on to a computer.
3. If you back up your saves to external storage they are locked to your specific console.

So possibly in the rare case Nintendo wipes your consoles memory and then returns that same console unmodified, this is the only case having a dedicated USB device for save game backups could pay off and the only specific case where it has an advantage over the switch. Probably if they had to compromise your systems memory they probably gave you a replacement console and the main reason to backup is in case something happens to your console anyway so this type of ability to back up saves is practically worthless.

I think the main reason this has become more unacceptable on switch is simply that switch is more popular.....and that its portable. The save game situation was practically just as bad on Wii U

That is interesting....I didn't notice dates had been added when I went through the nightmare of trying to figure out which save to keep when I had an unreliable USB drive that wouldn't always boot and caused duplicate save files on USB and internal memory.

I still contend that these saves are unable to be backed up to a computer and are console locked and hence are practically worthless.

@blaisedinsd The Link that @Octance gave you works great for backing up your Wii U save data, it also came in real handy after Nintendo's own system update bricked by wii U and had to send it to Nintendo for repair. Nintendo sent me a totally different Wii U console back and all I had to do was just recopy my games saves back over to the new Wii U internal memory.

Just hope that Nintendo doesn't brick your Switch with a system update if they do you can kiss your saves good bye, that's why Nintendo need to have a option to backup your game saves to micro sd card or external usb or hdd instead of trying to force people that isn't interested in there playing online games to pay for just cloud saves coming in september.

Interesting, maybe they do some magic when you send your console in for repair, or maybe they have updates OS features since I last tried, but I was unable to load my save games on to a different Wii U console. I was thinking my kids could bring there save games back and forth from their mom's house and it didn't work. Also tried to load a save on my buddies Wii U and could not.
