@Bankai Oh, don't worry, I'm still buying it. 7 months is a long time for a game to sit around. I don't know how a dev team could just let a game sit for that long. And even if they do it won't change the quality of the game.

What I'm trying to understand is why delay it when Ubi could have very well just released it right now with barely any marketing and Wii U owners would have jumped on it, since there's virtually nothing on the system. People normally on the fence are more likely to buy a game when there isn't much else, and when September comes along there will be more options around. Then, when it came out for the other systems, Ubi could have just spent most of their marketing for that. I don't know, I think Ubi is making a very wrong move with this one.

I'm very surprised by the delay too. There's likely a GOOD reason why it's being delayed, since it's kinda silly to let the game sit for months. Some people have pointed that out (like a major technical flaw). I have a theory that this game may as well be a dud from the start, but I hope I'm wrong :3

Just like what @Moomoo said, why delay the Wii U version when there is no competition at the moment? Releasing in September might also be a bad idea since Wind Waker HD also releases in fall and people might save their money for that instead of buying Rayman Legends.

Also, to say that it's in a different genre means that it doesn't compete with GTA is ludicrous. People play more than 1 genre, just like people enjoy multiple genres of movies and books. The only ones that don't are the guys that only play COD and Leage of Legends, and that's a huge overexageration in and of itself. I like pretty much every genre in games. I'm pretty sure many of you do to. My friends who don't go out on forums but enjoy video games seem to be able to enjoy games of many different genres if they're quality enough. Legends seems to be a quality game, but if it's coming out at the same time as a gaming mainstray in GTA V, how likely is it that a potential costumer would go for it? Meanwhile, February is pretty much empty.

February is empty because consumers don't spend money in February. Releasing anything now is a risk - especially with the likes of Ni No Kuni and Dead Space 3 on the market (Ni No Kuni is far closer to direct competition to Rayman, to boot).

There's always going to be a blockbuster released at some point each month. So, what, there should only be one game released each month? It's crazy logic to assume that releasing a very different product to give consumers an alternative is a bad idea.

@Bankai The competition will be vastly lower not only between systems in February, but most importantly within the Wii U itself. There are no notable games coming this month for the system outside the possibility of Aliens: Colonial Marines. By the time this launches in September there will be stuff for the Wii U in regards to competition. They could have simply released the game now for Wii U while there's virtually no competition and simply not advertise it heavily, instead using stuff like extremely positive reception to real in sales. Then they could use more marketing for the title once it hits other platforms. That way, more sales numbers would be achieved.

This time of the month is the month people get tax refunds (in the U.S. at least), so it's not too risky to release it during this time. I feel like I'm making silly justifications, but I'm posting this puppy anyway >:]

And there's a counter-argument to that: It's generally a better idea to release a game amongst some high-profile stuff, actually. Consumer interest directly relates to sales, and if there is no consumer interest (ie no AAA-games), then there are not going to be as many people walking into game shops.

For a niche interest game like Rayman, its best chance is actually in being offered as an alternative to a very different big-budget game, like GTA.

There are no guarantees in selling games, but seriously, I don't think any of us - not you, not me - is in any position to question Ubisoft's business motives for delaying a game to launch it next to a GTA game. Ubisoft is not exactly run by stupid people.

Lol. Even though this current argument would run in circles at this point, I'll contribute anyway. Even if selling games along side major releases has benefits, the game still has to compete (in terms of winning purchases) with at least 3 games this fall. So a well-known AAA title may benefit as a secondary purchase, but for a niche game...I don't know.

But anywho, the company probably is doing something smart under the hood.

@Bankai Historically speaking, games that came out within 4 weeks of a major GTA game don't do well unless they're part of an established series. Of all the games within an 8 week span of GTA 4's release (4 before, 4 after) then only other game that would really be considered truly successful would be Mario Kart Wii. Then you have Valkyria Chronicles and the Wii version of Okami. Those didn't fare as well. And those are two incredibly high-quality games.

Now, September is going to have more high quality releases than April in 2008. Rayman is going to get left in the dust.

Rayman will not be the only B-grade game released in the month. Guaranteed. In any given month there are always dozen of game releases-especially with all the digital platforms taken into account.

Regardless of when it is released, Rayman is going to have to compete with AAA-games and indie titles. It's going to have to compete against platforms its not even going to be released on - iOS games, for instance.

If it fails, it fails. But there is not a single day it could be released on and be free of competition. Even if it was released on the Wii U tomorrow it will still be competing with residual sales of ZombiU and Super Mario Bros, as well as recent download titles like Zen Pinball and The Cave. And the games released on the other platforms - The number of people out there who only have a Wii U will be limited, and so it would be competing with the PS3 and Xbox 360 game releases anyway

Where did you get that data from? Two games don't prove a point here.

That's indubitably true, but... right next to a major release?? Not on the date where they were targeting? The date that...you know, interested people were well aware of??

Yep, this argument is oscillating. Just hope this title does well :P

@Bankai I felt like listing the highest quality games to make a point. Okami and Valkyria Chronicles are very heavily loved by the gaming community. There are other games that came out, though. You have Boom Blox, that didn't sell well until after it's initial release (very much against the norm). The game sold around 60,000 about a month after release and then sold much better as time went on. Then you have some movie tie-ins and a bunch of games for windows with some DS games, although I'd attribute that more towards the quality of the games themselves than GTA getting rid of a chance for a game to show.

As for data, nothing positively 100% concrete, only using vgChartz and some comments regarding initial release numbers here. Sometimes I wish I could get access to better numbers like Japan.

This is disappointing for those that bought a Wii U exclusively for Rayman Legends. But on the bright side, more people will be able to play the game and it is not as if we are getting the short stick in terms of development. So all-in-all, I can take this as a good thing.

EDIT: ...And my opinion flips on the turn of a dime.

It's crazy to think that the sole reason those games failed was the existence of a GTA game. Both those games are incredibly niche interest games that simply do not look good on the shelf. They would have failed regardless of when they were released.

Okami has failed multiple times, in fact. Games in that franchise have not always been released next to a GTA game.

Okay, so I just learned that Ubisoft delayed the game primarily so that they could release all of the versions of t....

Yeah, that's pretty stupid.

EDIT: Looking at this more closely, I can kind-of see the logic in terms of advertising, but delaying the completed game so that Ubisoft can scatter their sales across multiple platforms? Honestly, that just seems self-defeating. If Ubisoft really wanted to go down the multiplatform route, wouldn't it be better to release the Wii U copy as a shelf game and then announce ports that are available digitally? Needless to say, I don't think this is the best move Ubisoft could have made.
