In case you haven't heard yet, Mario Kart 8 is getting free DLC of the new Mercedes-Benz vehicle, GLA 2015, with the company's recent partnership with Nintendo. This has caused an uproar among the gaming community, mostly consisting of negativity. How come WHENEVER Nintendo has a new idea for a game or something for their own franchises, let alone something completely optional, everyone hates it? The option of "For Glory" mode (No items, Final Destination only) in the new Super Smash Brothers? People have made a (unsuccessful) petition to get rid of that.
For this little rant, I am going to be comparing comments made about this decision. Some by comparing Mario Kart 8's GLA DLC with some of the 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games, such as Sonic Adventure 1, 2, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and Sonic Unleashed.
"It's a realistic car, it's out of place."
Umm... How? It's a CAR. Just like most of the vehicles! Heck, look at the Sports Coupe! That's designed based on a traditional sports car, and is fairly realistic, but nobody's complaining. So what?
Heck, in Sonic games such as unleashed, the OPPOSITE happens. You have this 3 foot tall anthropomorphic hedgehog running at mach 3 speeds in realistic environments. But nobody has complained about THAT, now do they!?
Besides, if you don't want a realistic car in your cartoony game, you DON'T NEED TO DOWNLOAD IT.
"Why is there a sponsor/product placement in my Mario Kart? Nintendo's REALLY desperate for money, and now Mario's nothing but a sellout." Ahem OPTIONAL. It's one tiny product placement you can CHOOSE to bring in, or decide to not bring in at all! It's not like the game is forcing you to download in onto your Wii U system.
On another note, "sellout" is one of the most fanboyish and immature terms I have ever heard, a company's main goal is to make money through its brands and intellectual properties, and with a big fish like Mario, one of gaming's biggest and most recognizable characters, there is always going to be a leech on the belly.
Now we get back to Sonic on the topic of product placements. In the game "Sonic Adventure 2", the game was sponsored by SOAP shoes, a shoe company that made sneakers for grinding on rails, with a special plastic piece granting you the ability to do so. In the game, the logo for SOAP shoes were on posters, billboards, heck, even pasted on blimps in stages like Radical Highway.
Not to mention Sonic himself was equipped with a modified pair of SOAP Nitro/Scorcher shoes designed for the game, and it's not like this DLC where it's completely optional, you HAVE to see Sonic wear them. For the ENTIRE game. FROM BEGINNING TO END.
"Why do we have something realistic in our cartoony game?"
Like I said, optional, and in Sonic the Hedgehog, the opposite happens. In the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic and his friends are running around realistic areas such as Soleanna (based on Venice, Italy.) communicating with realistic human beings, heck, even walking REALISTIC DOGS.
It wasn't much of an issue then, but now that we have the opposite happening in Mario Kart 8, that's such a shocker to everyone?
I don't know, maybe it's just me running my mouth spouting pointless nonsense. The gaming community is mostly consisting of idiots who throw tantrums like spoiled children who don't get a chocolate bar when they're at the checkout of a supermarket. I don't know about you, but I'm getting this DLC day one when it comes overseas.
i don't want to have games with ingame advertisment. especially not when it just doesn't fit. the mercedes in mario kart looks totally out of place. oh and i hate mercedes
Honestly, whats so wrong with Mario wanting the player to buy him a Mercedes Benz? All of his friends drive Porches. Also, rumor has it that he's worked hard all of lifetime with no help from his friends.

I think it looks really cool, and if you don't like it, then don't use it. It really is as simple as that.
It is not as simple as that. What happens when you are online without it do you restrict to only the subset of people without it.
If you get the real DLC how does that work. (Most people will just click free I want it). So you can only race against people who bought all the DLC except this garbage. Or does it temporarily download it for online ?
Most people seem to love advertising as much as pubescent boys love boobs.

It's quite as simple as downloading it automatically to every WiiU with Mario Kart 8 via an update and keeping it hidden until the owner decides to activate it.
That way you would be able to play with other people using it without problems.

The problem (as many have stated.) is that it's advertising. How it looks doesn't really bother me, but still I don't like it. Also, it's really not optional even if it's not forced through spotpass or something, because people will use it online. So, there is really no way to avoid it. Honestly, the only thing that could make this worse if this is the only dlc we really get, but I honestly doubt.

There were real life items in Pikmin 2, too. It's not that big of a deal. Mario shows up in the Mercedes commercials, the GLA shows up in Mario Kart. You don't have to use it, and it's free DLC.

I don't see any problem in some advertising, if it won't hurt the gameplay or the development it doesn't matter.
unless they do something like this on Pokémon, then I'll be mad >:[
