Lately, I've been thinking about how amazing an open world Punch Out game could be.
The Wii sequel felt too limiting. It had the visuals and audio of a contemporary release, but the gameplay was almost identical to that of the 1987 original. I couldn't believe that such a game was retailing for $90 in Australia at the time of its release.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

What I did not like about the Wii game was that it was mostly based on the NES characters and neglected most of the SNES ones. Also, there should be unlockable subtitles to know what each boxer says, as they all speak their own language.
But I think the Title Defense mode was a great way to add variety. Also the achievements for each boxer.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Great idea, but I'd settle for a release of the Punch-Out!! arcade games. How I've yearned to hear, "Body blow, body blow, left, right, now put him away!" coming from a Nintendo console.
In an open world Punch-Out!!, you can explore the Bronx, go for jogs, train at gyms by partaking in endurance exercises and other activities (that would take advantage of the increasingly neglected Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo), Little Mac can level up (boosting his strength and/or reputation) by stopping fights on the streets and by taking down thugs who pick fights and pull pranks on innocents, and in doing so, Little Mac can take on more powerful fighters once he has built a name for himself.
It certainly doesn't need to be an open world in the scale of Grand Theft Auto, but its a concept that can be tweaked in order to broaden the original concept, and make the fights feel that much more immersive and rewarding.

I probably didn't make it very clear that boxing will obviously still be a major part of the game. It's just the player will be taking some time controlling and powering up Little Mac out of the ring in order to build strength and interest from other potential fighters.
I think a new Punch-Out game would work better on 3DS, especially if they keep the old style of gameplay.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

That sounds really fun! Not sure if it would a good fit for Punch Out but I'd like a game like what you describe. Training at gyms and fighting in the streets between combats for building-up stats and gaining experience... This could be Wii U's mini GTA
I just want to see the series move forward (and have some fun with Little Mac in as well as out of the ring). I see no point in Nintendo making an HD version of a game bound by the limitations of a console from 1987, which was essentially what Punch-Out!! for Wii was. I liked it and all, but it didn't do anything to move the series forward. It was basically the same old Punch-Out, with the same old mechanics, but with pretty 3D models to dig my fists into. Heck, it even had the same title as the 1987 original, right down to the two exclamation points. We don't need yet another rehash of this. Nintendo needs to be bold and ambitious and harness their tried-and-true brands to their full potential like they did when Metroid transitioned into 3D.
