I guess you should get used to that term, because most people have been describing Star Fox games like that for every game after 64. What I meant was its not as bad as people portray it as, its actually a lot of fun.
Last great game, yes. But saying "Don't pull another Star Fox Assault" makes Assault sound horrible, and it really wasn't. Especially for a game made by a non-Nintendo team, they did a good job.
I know it's a matter of opinion, but Assault was a horrible game, for a Star Fox game. And let's not forget that it was the true, home console sequel, to 64
Me saying 'don't pull another Star Fox' is my way of saying, don't ruin the series, in a somewhat simplistic way

It was better then Adventures Assault played more like a Star fox game then adventures did, it wasn't better then Star fox 64 but it's still a damn good gamecube game. anyway the Tekken/soul Calibur guys are helping with this Fighting games is what there good at, and besides Mr.Sakurai is the boss.

It left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I don't believe that many Star Fox fans came away from Assault satisfied, which is my worry for Smash Bros fans...
P.S. just to play devils advocate...Namco also made a little beat-em-up called Knuckle Heads....
Well if this game turns out to be awful, there's always the game after that, and you can be sure Nintendo won't let them work on it again if that happens. The thing is I don't think it'll be bad. Like others have said, Sakurai being in charge pretty much assures that it'll be a good game. I like the idea that it might be a little different, as Sakurai has expressed that the series needs change, this is the new direction it needed.
@People hoping for Namco characters: Lol dream on.
@People who are worried Namco will ruin these games: Thats not happening either. Sakurai and Nintendo will still lead the project. I doubt Namco will have any input as far as ideas go.
I don't think we should expect Namco Bandai to be involved and not see the lovable yellow pill-popper make his way into the game somehow.
Honestly, the next character I'd expect is probably Valkyrie. (well, aside from the obvious Tekken or SoulCalibur choices)
While fairly unknown in the west, it sounds like she's pretty well-known in Japan.
Unless they want to put Dig Dug in, though I don't know how much they can do with him. All he could do is inflate the enemies until they explode, or drop rocks on their heads.
(Pac-Man did gain fireballs, hammers and a grappling hook in one game called Pac-In-Time)
Let's see... Bandai could put in... um... and uh... (trying to think of what original IP they have, since they mostly just make licensed properties.)
ACTUALLY I DO ONE... well, since they brought back the early '90s playground wars in the last game with Sonic vs. Mario... will Nintendo let them stick one of the Digimon in the next Smash Bros.?
(and I know someone's going to jokingly suggest a certain NES Bandai game, even though Toho should actually be blamed for making that one.)
I'm pretty sure Pac-Man will be in the game. He's pretty much Namco's mascot. When Nintendo and Namco teamed up to make Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix 1 and 2, Namco squeezed in 3 Pac-Man characters. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't expect to see him in SSB U.
And as for Dig Dug being too simple of a character, I wouldn't count him out either. Mr. Game & Watch was just a stick figure and they came up with enough moves to make him fit. Then again, G&W was kind of an amalgamation of several different characters from the G&W series.
