While the Wii U does have it's own set of niches right now, what other niches can you see it falling into in the future.
As an analogous example, the original Wii found a new niche in the form of simple or lower budget games such as niche JRPGs (Little King's Story, Oopoona, etc).

Pretty much action games like Asura's Wrath and JRPGS galore should hit Wii U. But the Wii U can't even get a freaking Dragon Ball Z fighting game or a Naruto game. Really bizarre how none of those games hit Wii U but remain to PlayStation and Xbox even though Xbox sells horribly in Japan.

Those anime games have a pretty small yet decimated fanbase in America/Europe which is why the PlayStation/Xbox gets them . You have many mainstream gamers who tend to get those games for Nostalgia's sake.
