I've probably been more disappointed with the Wii U's library than I've been with any other Nintendo system. And I don't even own one yet. That's pretty shameful.

I straight up disliked Hyrule Warriors and Mario 3D World. While I like Mario Kart 8 plenty, it's the first console entry in the series that really feels like a downgrade from the previous console entry. Yes, the HD is pretty and all, but the bike mechanics were nerfed, the roster is terrible, and the track designs aren't as good as MK Wii.

I'm disappointed that Mario Kart 8 doesn't have Boo as a playable racer. I'm shocked you didn't like Hyrule warriors? what did you not like about it? I personally didn't like the look or feel of mario 3d world (the one with mario as a cat) because it just didn't feel fun, I like the feeling of super mario galaxy better, but think it could have been better anyway also.

in more depth and detail why did you not like mario kart 8? was it... too easy? because if so I'm happy because the previous mario karts were too difficult for me to have alot of fun, the bikes were extremely difficult for me as well. but I did love the crazy race tracks and hope they are just as elaborate and insane.

are you looking forward to Zelda u and the majoras mask refresh, and what did you think of zelda windwaker hd?

@Taceus You know you don't need to own a console to play a game right? I have friends with Wii U's, I've checked out demo kiosks repeatedly. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the games I'm talking about. Notice how I'm not complaining about The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, or any other games on the Wii U?

Anyway, I don't like Hyrule Warriors because it just feels completely pointless and redundant. It's not really challenging to barrel through a bunch of enemies, and the fun wears off really fast. To be fair, I haven't played a Warriors game before, but nothing about that game seemed fun to be. I should also add that the timing and implementation of rumble was awful.

I don't dislike MK8. I actually quite like it for the same reason I like most other Mario Karts. But it feels like a downgrade with shinier visuals, whilst Double Dash, and Wii both felt like upgrades (I personally have issues with Double Dash's implementation, but it still felt like it built upon MK64. I didn't feel like the track design was as inspired as in the Wii version. For me bikes in MKWii fit my play style a lot better with the inside drift and wheelies. Last but not least, I grew up in the N64 era. I didn't find out the Koopalings even existed until I was 17 or 18 years old. So naturally I don't care at all for them as options. Also, I don't know why we have Pink Gold Peach and Metal Mario when Bowser Jr. among many other characters are missing.

I'm not too big on remakes of games unless they completely rebuild the game from the ground up or I haven't played the original. Neither of those is true with WWHD.

hmm. yea I agree and disagree with a few different things, but I totally agree that the characters were not well thought out for mario kart 8. there was no point for them to add so many pointless characters like the metal peach and mario as well as baby versions of almost everything, when they could have added boo and sonic as more significant racers. but they could have simply just added them all and it would have been nice, or let the player make their own character out of many different parts right? I would have liked a "choose the skin/voice/move set/etc. from any of all the characters to customize your own unique character" in super smash bros Wii U

WHAT I LOVE

I really like the fact the Wii U still hearkens back to what a console was originally meant to be. I like that discs don't have mandatory installs, I like the menu interface. I like the settings- I think the little icons that are colored and fade on the bottom look way cool. I REALLY like the TV button for changing inputs and powering the TV. My Charter remote only cycles down through inputs, and sometimes I'll have to press the button 12 times to get to the one directly above me- the gamepad solves that aggravation. I definitely like Miiverse- that's just brilliant. I really like the gamepad too- and I know that gets said so much it loses meaning, but I really do, TRULY enjoy having a screen on the controller. Especially with how lightweight they were able to make it. Resolution doesn't bother me one bit. I also like that Wii U is compatible with so many controllers- it adds diversity to the system and allows developers to work with a more expansive tool kit and bring more types of games (Pikmin 3 with Wiimote, to Wonderful 101 with dual screens, to Bayonetta 2 with Pro Controller).I love the virtual saves, custom button configurations, screen smoothing and digital manuals of VC games- really well done there. I like the compact size and style of the console as well. I love that it's backwards compatible and I'm really digging the selection of digital games. Oh, and the fact they let you transfer from the Wii- too awesome! Most of all, I really love the games it plays.

WHAT I HATE

I hate how long it takes to boot apps and games. Not so bad now that we have quick start but that only helps when the system is initially off. I hate how little customization is allowed on your Miiverse profile, and that at least twice a year I'm notified by the administrators that I showed spoilers over some random screenshot in a game that has no story or serious plot. I hate that certain VC games like Donkey Kong Country SNES trilogy and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones aren't for sale- that's really irritating. I hate that NNID's are tied to the hardware- I've never had a Nintendo console break and I understand that you can call Nintendo now rather then having to send the unit in, but nonetheless I'd prefer the peace of mind of having net-based accounts.

That's about it really...

Such has always been the case, but it's different this gen. Not a lot of consumers are going to buy $700 worth of consoles this gen, which is what you're going to be paying for a Wii U + something else. 5 years ago, you could buy a new PS3 and a Wii for $500. 10 years ago, you could buy a PS2 and a Gamecube for $300. Nintendo needs to either drastically cut the price of their console or make it the first choice for consumers.

Fat chance of either of those happening, sadly.

Maybe it's just my Australian perspective but I kinda feel like the reverse is true. I'm a PC/Nintendo gamer and have been for a while and co-incidentally I built a PC around the time I got my Wii. I spent about $1300AU on what was a pretty average gaming PC even at the time. I mean it was ok but I wasn't exactly running even games of its day at the full res of my CRT with details cranked. Then I got a Wii which cost $399AU with games easily sitting in the high $80AU range.

Compare that to now. The PC I just built which was $1200AU but can actually run any current game with the sliders all the way to the right at 1080p. And instead of being just "ok" if anything I'd argue I probably went a bit overboard with it. When the Wii U launched here it was $399AU for the premium model and $299AU for the basic. And games instead of $70AU being a bargain and $95AU being the regular price as it was at the Wii's launch? It's more like $50AU and $80AU. I know a lot of this has to do with the changing prices for tech here due to online competition. (I did actually pay $95AU for Twilight Princess after hunting around for it everywhere). However I suspect that if there's that much of a gap here there must at least be a similar story elsewhere if you took inflation into account

Anyways, even before you take into account inflation and the price of games this PC + Nintendo combo is $100-200AU less than it was last generation. If you do adjust for inflation it's actually between $450AU and $550AU cheaper this gen for this combo. An amount which co-incidentally would be enough to buy me a PS4 now a year after launch. Which is again interesting given that the PS3 cost $999AU for its launch year.

@iKhan yeah, sorry about that mate, I'm a bit snarky in the morn before a coffee. You have a fair point, similar to test driving a car I guess.
FWIW, MK8 and HW only held my attention until I saw the credits role, as well as NSMBU, SM3DW and DKC:TF. Technically, I've yet to unlock Champions Road but have unlocked the final DKC:TF world. My point, my desire to play them has waned bacause to me they're forgettably fun, maybe because I'm so used to those games.
OTOH, DE:HR, TW101, SC:BL, LCU, RL and recently AC4 are games I find more fun and memorable, most likely because they're fresh to me (only owned Nintendo systems, but have played the others- looking at you Burnout Takedown and Midnight Club 3- )
I agree with you regarding the MK8 characters. I'd be happy if the koopalings had one slot like in SSB4 and they ditched the metallic characters.
I'd be more keen on WWHD if I didn't play it to death 10 years ago.

They don't even need to drop the price. $300 for a Wii U that can still run Wii games, and will get Metroid Prime Trilogy next week for $10 is a pretty good deal. Plus, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Super Mario 3D World are 8th generation games. You can't get those games on Xbox 360 and PS3, and you can't get them on Xbox One or PS4, either.

There is free online and they are pushing sales on games down peoples' throats. Next month when Club Nintendo has its last give away, I'll have 1600 or so coins to spend on digital games that will probably be worthwhile, given it's the last month they are doing that program.

The console price is the same as it was when the first price drop happened, and there are a ton more games than last year.

I know it's off topic still but it kinda annoys me when people try to argue that gaming is more expensive than it used to be. I actually saw a facebook post the other day where someone put up an EBGames catalogue showing an N64 game from 2000 that was $125AU. In the comments people actually tried to argue that that was still a better deal than what we get now. Because for that $125AU (which is almost $200AU adjusted for inflation) you got a "finished game". What? Oh noes, these days you have to pay a massive $69AU for your average Wii U game or heaven forbid $89AU for some of the biggest AAA titles on PS4/XBOne. Massive games that have ridiculously huge budgets that most people will not even bother to finish before they move onto the next thing. How dare some of them have DLC!

"They need to drop the price, things are too expensive, they don't have a massive new game for me this month" etc etc..... I get that some people are doing it tough but damn, be at least a bit happy that it's a much, much cheaper hobby than it was not that long ago. My parents weren't at all well off, I got maybe two or three games a year and a new console every other generation. If gaming was as cheap as it is now back then I would have been swimming in content. So it irks me when people whine about this sort of thing.

I've probably been more disappointed with the Wii U's library than I've been with any other Nintendo system. And I don't even own one yet. That's pretty shameful.

I straight up disliked Hyrule Warriors and Mario 3D World.

I can't say I agree that much, things should be a bit cheaper I suppose.

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

What I'm saying is that people complain about price as if somehow it's massively more expensive than it is when it's not. It's very pronounced in Australia over the last console generation or so because of other factors but even in the US it's pretty obvious. To put it simply, gaming isn't getting more expensive. Have a look at the prices of Nintendo's consoles at launch in adjusted for inflation to 2012 dollars:

NES: $190
SNES: $330
N64: $287
GC: $257
Wii: $283
Wii U: $299

So when people jump up and down saying the console should be cheaper? Or that it's "tougher than ever"? When not that long ago the Wii was celebrated as the budget friendly console at basically the same price? I call BS. Especially when I know that US game prices haven't risen anywhere near the rate of inflation. Even moreso when you take into account the fact that indie games at a fraction of the price are often just as deep as what were once full retail titles. It's not free but it's far more accessible than it has ever been.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

I feel like your defending corporations charging me more money and it makes me dislike you severely.

But it is worth noting that the Wii U is the most expensive Nintendo system since the SNES.
