Please! If you can explain a really good reason to require a gamepad then let me know, but I can't think of it.

Super Mario Maker.

Super Mario Maker is also on 2DS/3DS, and it's better there.

You had this theory a few years back, I think you were wrong then and you're still wrong now. One of the Wii U's main issues was an inability to communicate what it was. Consumers were confused about what it was, adding more SKUs to the mix would have made things worse.

Also while we're going back over this theory lets add some new info to the mix. We now know that Nintendo was pulling resources from Wii U and pushing them towards the Switch as early as 2014. So I think we can say with some certainty that shortly after E3 2014 there were effectively no new projects approved for Wii U. In other words at E3 2014 we saw Nintendo giving the Wii U its last chance to do well.

By E3 2015 the Wii U was dead, Nintendo was effectively just showcasing the tail end of its library. If Nintendo had not effectively moved on from the Wii U E3 2015 would have been very different. We would have probably seen Super Mario Odyssey and Arms for Wii U. Likely with the promise of them launching in 2016. Would those things have helped the Wii U? Sure. But Nintendo, under the direction of Iwata, took the gamble that they would do better starting again with a new platform.

So when you say that Nintendo should have done something dramatic to save the Wii U? I think you're ignoring the part where they did do something dramatic. What they did was stop production of consoles and stop spending money on any more games for it. The only thing they did for the Wii U after 2014 was keep it on the shelves and finish the games they had already started. What your suggesting would have required effort/money that they weren't willing to expend.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

@skywake I agree that instead of giving effort to try to save Wii U they decided to dump it and move on to a new platform. Wii U owners kind of got a raw deal. I don't think a software update to give the pro controller as much ability to control the system as the gamepad would have been as difficult or as confusing as you think. I don't think different SKU's would have been any harder to manage than the already many different controllers supported, or having rumble supported in some games and not others, or having a 3DS and a 2DS. Instead of abandoning the gimmick of the console they abandoned the console all together. They could have abandoned the gimmic and marketed it as their first HD console that is very affordable and family friendly (get soccer moms to buy it for their kids instead of more mature competition). I gave the effort/money to support the console and Nintendo did not.
