Wii U owners and potential Wii U owners were rightfully disgruntled when Ubisoft delayed Rayman Legends. This was in February, a month that fueled Wii U haters' defamation of the console for its notoriously low sales. Rayman Legends was set to be the first remotely major release for the infant console after its launch month. It didn't happen. Ubisoft didn't delay the platformer a week, or until March, or even until Summer. It was delayed until September. I personally know at least two people who planned to purchase a Wii U because of Rayman Legends. One of them eventually bought it for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate; the other has yet to buy one, and says he probably won't until Pikmin 3. I read the scathing comments on the company's Facebook page and Twitter feed. It seems there were dozens of others who had been waiting to buy a Wii U until Rayman Legends, a Wii U exclusive title and even-better-looking sequel to 2011's critically acclaimed Rayman Origins, was released. These dozens I noticed that voiced their frustration and wrath to Ubisoft probably represent at least a couple of thousand more. That's 2,000 units that Nintendo didn't sell in February. and it's all because Ubisoft decided to make Rayman Legends multiplatform.

The development team felt screwed over. Fans felt screwed over. Nintendo, even though they never spoke out against Ubisoft, probably felt screwed over. Ubisoft was attacked everywhere, particularly on Miiverse. People threatened to boycott Ubisoft, claiming they would never buy another game from the company. Ubisoft apologized with the promise of an exclusive demo, which has been changed to a free "Challenge Mode." Execs stated that Rayman Legends would evolve to be a bigger and better game; and to be honest, this seems to be the truth. "Trust me, the things we are adding aren't minor. We're not talking about adding some polish here and there, but 30 new levels and several new bosses," Senior Game Manager Michael Micholic said in an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine." Improving the game seems to be only half of the reasoning for the delay, however. “We usually release all of our platforms simultaneously (aside from PC). We’ve made special exception sometimes in the past but it’s definitely just on a case by case basis and not our standard practice. We thought it was making more sense to also bring the game to where it was originally from. That means Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. So we decided to go for a multiplatform launch simultaneously," said one Ubisoft employee.

I can say this. Ubisoft has proved not to be a hypocrite after saying this. They weren't just saying they were going to release NextBox and PS4 versions at the same time. The Wii U, it truly seems, is getting every Ubisoft game in the pipeline, at least this year. Watch_Dogs was confirmed, followed by Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and then today, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist. That leaves South Park: The Stick of Truth, which seems to be a definite possibility. A future Far Cry? Seems destined for Wii U. Ubisoft is taking risks and supporting the console when most other third parties either make excuses, bash it, or remain silent. Sure, Warner Bros. isn't giving up, and we've got a Capcom game and maybe two Square Enix games. but almost every single western developer has remained non-supportive. Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops II gets no DLC, but the Wii U gets UPlay bonus perks, and all of the DLC for Assassin's Creed III and Marvel: Battle for Earth and Just Dance 4.

Sure, we have to wait several months to play Rayman Legends, but we get at least three high quality games in return. We received an exclusive ZombiU, and it could very well get an exclusive sequel. (They would have to change the name and controls in order to make it multiplatform, so I suspect this may be an IP exclusivity exception in Nintendo's favor). Ubisoft supports Nintendo and has faith in their console. I support them. Their success could prove to other companies that multiplatform third party games do indeed have a place in Nintendo's library. This time next year, the console's library will be far from barren, and the shelves of Wii U owners will have a plethora of games. Before I purchased the console, I never thought that the publisher with the second highest number of games in my Wii U library after Nintendo would be Ubisoft. It certainly seems that will be the case. Here's a toast to them.

Forgiven. They clearly want to support the WiiU, as is evidenced by them bringing over so many games, but they do need to think about profitability. Making the game available on more consoles means more customers. The entire fiasco of the delay is from some ridiculous rule Microsoft has, so it's difficult to put the blame on Ubisoft.

Also, despite GTA 5 coming out right around the same time as Rayman, I think they are aimed at different enough markets with minimal overlap, so fingers crossed it doesn't backfire for them.

I'd be very surprised. You have to remember that this game was near the end of it's development when it was purchased by Ubisoft and up to that point there had been no plans for a Wii U version. If it does make it to the platform you can be sure that either it will be a late port or, if it's a simultaneous release, that its development has delayed release of the game on other platforms. Of course, we know only too well that Ubisoft are not averse to those kind of decisions but the relatively small market represented by the Wii U at the moment has to make a delay of that kind unlikely.

There's no getting away from the fact that they handled the Rayman thing badly. That said, they are the premier third party on Wii U and, lest we forget, they were on Wii as well. I just wish they made more games I was interested in, so that that I could actually support them. Sadly, the only one of their major franchises that appeals is the Assassins Creed series and, having played four - six hours of tutorial on the first one before giving up in boredom I'm not inclined to revisit it. That leaves Red Steel 2 as the only Ubisoft game in my collection unfortunately. I'd be quite happy to see them acquire Darksiders though.

What? GTAV will destroy Rayman legends that's without question.

But do I forgive Ubisoft for what they did. NO!

I'd give the series another chance, 1 is so much worse than it sequels it's not even funny.

Hmmm... the eShop sale's still on, isn't it? The reviews I'd seen suggested it still had the lengthy tutorials, are they gone? I grew bored of the game before they were over.

Every sale for GTA month is a potential one that legends isn't going to get. Honestly im expecting the most success on Wii U and maybe not that much due to spurned Nintendo fans not supporting the title.

I want to play Rayman Legends. It's as simple as that for me. If it was released in February I would have bought it. If it is delayed for another three years, I will still buy it. Those that refuse to buy it because of a delay need to pull their head out of the behind and live in the real world.

...oooh...um...

I'd find 2 for cheap and hope for the best instead.

I will say that tutorial is not a normal complaint about AC1 (as there's so much more to be annoyed with in that game). I'm almost caught off-guard by that.

AC1 has a lot that people didn't like with it but I enjoyed it. It was repetitive but I like going around getting information on my target and figuring out the best way to attack. AC2 wasn't as enjoyable to me, I felt like they held my hand way too much compared to the first and AC2 totally turned me off from the series.

Haha! That tutorial seemed so endless that I never got past it. I was staying at a friend's house and they were out one evening. I don't own an Xbox or a PS3 so that was the only time I've tried it. When my girlfriend decided it was time for bed though I was relieved to turn it off and I never looked back.

What's there to forgive? Ubisoft can delay the game if they want. They don't need anyone else's permission or forgiveness.

I wouldn't use that word. Not because I don't agree with it but because it's used by people so often the word no longer means anything and thus saying it is the same as saying nothing (see also: epic).

The "#1" was more in jest. It's a discussion topic. I had a lengthy opinion on the matter, but I'd like others' input as well... pretty much every thread on any forum could be part of a blog.
