Topic: Pikmin 3 vs. the originals..

What are your thoughts on Pikmin 3 being comparible to pikmin 1 and 2..

Pikmin 1 was the original so we have to start there..
Pikmin 2 had alot to provide.. alot of enemies, areas, and caves added ever lasting "stages" which players dreamed of from the difficulty with the day limit in pikmin 1.. pikmin two also randomized each generated new sublevel (in most cases anyway) making players never know what to expect. Pikmin 3.. like pikmin 1 was pretty much the same IMO in terms of difficulty and content. Pikmin 1 could be completed in less than 15 days.. pikmin 2 can be 100% completed in just 8 days! (There are walk throughs for 8 day runs it's possible) however pikmin 3 takes around 20-40 days to 100% complete!!! BUT.. pikmin 2 is still longer as you spent all that time in caves where the timer is paused in the overworld..

Point is they all have different mechanics.. do you think nintendo lived up to the series with the third installment like skyward sword lived up to the zelda fanchise? Or do you feel it was a downer like metroid other m (actually one of my favs fyi) was a downer to the fanchise..

Pikmin 1 is a great game and the birth of what came to be a great IP. Pikmin 2 was all good and fun, but my god, the incessant ringing of the treasure finder made me hate the game by the end of it. I couldn't stand it and will never play the game again because of it. I loved it for a while though until that started to drive me nuts, now it tarnishes the memories.

...Pikmin 3 is easily the best of them and just a great game. One of my top three games from last year.

They are all basically the same level of quality game to me, just all different. All 3 are great but not to the level where I rant about how amazing they are. Honestly it's a great example of how a lot of sequels should be done, in that they are all very similar titles that have significant differences that you can pretty immediately notice and enjoy. Pikmin 3's main thing seems to be that they wanted to bring back the time limit back from the first game but in a way that kids have a chance to not horribly fail at. They also had a 3rd character, some new multiplayer ideas, adding some video gamey level structure to the overworld (as in, you logically end up going towards to the boss that makes sense for the progression of the areas as video game levels), having a more focused story early on, the final level's uniqueness etc. Also because the Pikmin types are limited in these games, adding 2 new ones is a more significant change then say, adding new powerups in a Mario game or a new item in Zelda.

Pikmin 2 is probably my favorite personally.

I honestly love the first one the most just because I don't enjoy controlling more than one Captain at a time, just personal preference. Third is a close second to the first game though, that game is gorgeous.

I can't rank them, I love all 3...Pikmin 1 was the one where it makes you feel like you were REALLY stranded on an alien planet. Racing to build your ship to escape...Pikmin 2 I just love because of the difficulty and all of the bosses (yes I'm obsessed with bosses, shush, lol)...Pikmin 3 I feel it fits in between the two.

I like them all for different reasons. The first game is definitely the most fun to replay for me, mainly because it's not very long and to truly beat it, you have to 100% it. I don't know exactly why I find that appealing, though. I just do. Pikmin 2 didn't have the urgency of the first game, but it did add a lot more depth to the game, and the dungeons required quite a bit of strategy. Multiplayer was fun as well. Pikmin 3's emphasis on multitasking was neat, and I definitely made use of it, but being forced to use the gamepad for it felt weird, especially since the ideal way to play was with the nun-chuck. It doesn't help that the game gets paused every time you want to multitask, basically meaning that the gamepad gimmick wasn't really needed, since all the tasks could have been handled fine on just the TV screen. Regardless, it's a great little game.

As with everyone else, I liked all three, and I played them chronologically. Yet Pikmin 3 was the only one I got at launch.

The first one was a charming little game, and I even felt compelled to get all treasures in my first playthrough. It has already most of the bases for the other two installments.

2 provides improvements over the first one, like the obscene amount of treasures, but I was not the biggest fan of caves. I also hated that water monster that could crush all of your Pikmin in seconds.

3 is gorgeous to look at, and the captain switching allows for interesting puzzles. Plus the multiplayer is a nice change of pace.

So if I had to rank them, I would go 3, then 2 then 1.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Copy/pasted from the Pikmin 3 thread:

"The creatures in 3, while creative, were not challenging whatsoever. Bulborbs (what few of them returned from 2 since over half of them are gone) got horribly nerfed with the eye attack strategy, something you'd never do in Pikmin 1 or 2, the poor Borrowing Snagret is a joke against Winged Pikmin, and even the dreaded Wollywogs aren't that big of a threat. And those are just a few examples. Not to mention the cut vs new ratio is rather disappointing. As stated before, we lost most of the Bulborb family (such as all the Bulblaxes) and only got one new species in return. Then there's the Jellyfloats, Dweevils, Dirigibugs, and others that got axed.

Though I guess to look on a positive note the enemy placement in 3 does look more a lot more realistic unlike 2 where you'd see a dozen animals, from several different species at that, all with two inches from each other. But like you said it did make things more interesting in terms of strategy."

But that's just one aspect. There's plenty more I would talk about, but it'd quickly turn into a tl;dr situation. As such I rank 2 and 3 as equal due to each having the same amount of ups and downs. 1 is definitely on the bottom for me though.

Um, well, I'd go with 2, because it was my first, and it was nice having no time limit. 1 was pretty good for a challenge, and for speedruns, and 3 had the best multi-player.

You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

We must not forget the waterwraith in pikmin 2... that instantly makes it the bottom of my list! (why isn't there any creepypastas about submerged castle.. srsy..)

I remember when I was innocently playing for the first time and jumpscare cutscene intro of the wraith appeared out of know where.. it was the suspense of waiting for him to finally showing up and the random jumpscare cutscene during the first encounter that bothered me rather than his overall appearence..

@WingedSnagret Ikr, Dirigibugs were my favorite enemies and now they're gone

Pikmin was my first gamecube game. It is one of the 5 best games I have ever played imo. I never seriously played through pikmin 2 because I remember getting so hyped for it but lost interest because it took so long to come out. Even with this bias, I will say it never seemed as good as the original.

For me Pikmin 2 is the best followed by 3 (best replay value and multiplayer) then 1. To be honest I love them all pretty much equally and hope we see a forth that takes advantage of the Wii U to provide an even more engaging world then Pikmin3.

I'd finish if I still had it(kinda I'd need to still have a Gamecube or a Wii too)

A remake for the wii came out. Since you can play wii games on the wii u you can buy the NPC pikmin 1 and 2 and still play it.

While I enjoy the open worlds in Pikmin 3, the sublevels and caves in Pikmin 2 really made the game enjoyable for me. I also liked Pikmin 2's challenge mode, but Pikmin 3's actually really makes me think about what I want to do. I like Pikmin 2's story slightly more than Pikmin 3's, but I think they both have fun challenge modes and multiplayer modes. Pikmin 1 was never extremely appealing to me, maybe because I got it last year after playing Pikmin 2 dozens of times.

ALSO, I'm pretty sure Pikmin 3 can be beaten in 7 days or something like that. I know MilesSMB did a speedrun of it at AGDQ 2014
