hey guys some more bad news... here are some new pics i found, and they dont seem to be disproving my theory...
and
only three captains... i dont care if this game is 4-player or 3-player, but i think it would be so much better co-op. 4 may be too many, so maybe they are only doing three now? i dont know but i can hope.
1, where do you find those pics? And 2, remember this picture.
Clearly four Captains; the Louie relative-looking one must be somewhere outside the shot, perhaps in an entirely different area. Maybe you have to find some of the Captains at the beginning, like at the start of P2 when Olimar and Louie get briefly separated.

I think there is still a (limited) chance that we will have cooperative play. We've seen four captain colors so far: blue, red, green, and yellow. Those colors line up with the Wii system player colors. The three captains that player one controls are blue, red, and green, which are even the colors that the Wii assigns players one, two, and three respectively; and the blue captain seems to be the primary captain in most of the gameplay so far, which is the color assigned to player one.
Now that could all mean nothing, but maybe they decided that four captains was just too many for one player to control. Maybe the fourth captain (captain D) stays in the ship until a second player enters the game, at which point the two players both control two captains. And then when a third player enters the game, Captain D goes back into the ship and the players control one captain each (or player one gets two captains). And again the players control one captain each when a fourth player enters the game.
There is no real way to know at all, but I would like for some cooperative play in the story mode. My sister, my dad, and one of my friends are all very good at Pikmin. We've played the first two games (we've all 100% Pikmin, and I 100% Pikmin 2 while they just paid the debt), and therefore we all understand the merits of cooperative play in a game like this. More simultaneous players means more tasks that can be accomplished simultaneously. That's a pretty big advantage if the players are coordinated and know what they are doing. It would be a lot of fun to plan a day out an communicate with each other to accomplish stuff and help each other.
Hopefully we won't have to wonder too much longer. While I would consider no (or very limited) cooperative modes a loss, I will still enjoy this game. It's still a lot of fun by yourself.

Even though only 3 captains are shown in the picture, it still looks amazing And there are 4 captains. They wouldn't change that after telling us at e3. Perhaps your theory above is correct but I think they might just be out of the shot.

Based on Miyamoto's recent comment about switching among three captains, I really don't think that is the case. Although there may indeed be a fourth captain in the game.

Ya, looking back, it does seem like that's what he's saying unless he worded it weirdly and he's saying that you play as one and you can switch between the other 3.
you have the three different leaders that you switch between to command your Pikmin

Yah my brother and i are both very good at Pikmin, and it would be so much more fun together, but i guess we just have to wait. you do have a pretty good idea though, maybe that's why there is only 3 captains out...
As for this...
it doesn't mean anything, because look at character B, she is so different now... she has glasses, new hair, newish nose, she isnt even yellow anymore, shes pink
and...
The logo is orange now, maybe the flowers of the new Pikmin are too? or maybe its some sort of story element...so much has changed since e3 so we really don't know a lot about this game anymore...
BUT, i do have an idea... we have all seen this captain in the e3 trailer
the RED captain on the right, he looks exactly like the BLUE captain (A), so maybe if you play multiplayer you just get a clone of the main character as a fourth captain, and then you can still switch between the others... seems plausible...
With this game regressing in gameplay, being more like the first than the second, the option of a 4 player co-op adventure would definitely give the game a sense of progressing the series. I know I would have fun with it considering my mom's and little brother's interest in the series. Regardless, I'm still considering a purchase even if a multiplayer lacks, though I'll be less inclined to put $60 down.
I just remembered you can play Pikmin 2 online through netplay with Dolphin emulator, because I've done it before.
If I can play a Gamecube game online with an emulator that wasn't even DESIGNED to be an online multiplayer game, there's no reason why they couldn't implement it in the Wii U version other than sheer laziness.
You were not using the Gamecube hardware. That's the flaw in your logic

I already know for sure there's going to be a 4 player challenge mode, because they announced it. I doubt there will be online outside of DLC and such.
They want this to mainly be a single player game, that's why they won't do it. It's not because they can't get it to work, or they can't come up with an idea anout how to.
It's just not part of their interest.
If they do add the features you guys want so bad, I'll honestly be surprised, but I'm getting the game based on what they said back at E3.

no this thread isn't about online multiplayer, no one is expecting that, and its obviously not gonna happen.. this thread is about local/offline multiplayer
ya know now that i think about it more and more, I'm starting to think that this is definitely the case... the game will just add a clone if you add a player.. it makes total sense, especially with the evidence of the mysterious red captain...
I do hope it is co-op. I tend to get annoyed at the notion that every game needs multiplayer, but Pikmin would be brilliant with co-op. I'd love that idea.
I don't see why the game wouldn't be co-op! Even if it's just something like challenge mode from Pikmin 2, I'll be happy. Even if the co-op is only two players, I would be happy, but of course 3 or four players would be awesome. I know I've played a four player co-op level in LittleBigPlanet 2 before (with Sackbots, it was ridiculous lol), but imagine how deep the strategy could get with four people playing at once! I would play with my friends NONSTOP if this game had four player co-op!

That's possible. It's also possible that the red captain was placeholder.
If there is another captain, my guess is he (or she) will be yellow now.
