I've been a fan of the Paper Mario series since the beginning and while Sticker Star definitely was a weak entry in the series, I've yet to be truly let down by it's run so far. There's never been a bad game per say for me.

Obviously since the last game came out not even a year ago, it's too early to tell what the Paper Mario 5 will be like or if its even in development at the moment.
Where do YOU think the series is going to go next? Where do you want it to go? What do you want to see? And when do you think it'll come out?

Also how would you rate the series? Here's my personal list.

1. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
2. Super Paper Mario
3. Paper Mario
4. Paper Mario Sticker Star

Just to clarify, YES I rate SPM over the original. Why? Because I actually enjoy SPM more. I felt like it's story, overall themes of looming death, multiple characters and hilarious dialogue make it superior to the original. True, I do miss the battle system but that doesn't kill the game in any way and I give Intelligent Systems kudos for trying to be different and not blatantly repeat the same game for a third time.

But of course, The Thousand Year Door is superior to all.

I have to say, I really agree with your ranking, except I'd probably be like the majority here and put the original at number 2.
With the next in the series (if there will be one) I just want it to be different then Sticker Star honestly. I don't know what the series may need, but the sticker thing just didn't set well with me.

@Joshers744 Yea I agree. The Sticker CONCEPT had great promise but poor execution. I also disliked the simplicity Miyamoto forced upon the game. No original characters, no real partners, no tattle system, no Pit of 100 Trials, no recipe system, barely any funny dialogue and the worst character ever cough Kersti cough made this game really watered down. It still wasn't bad by any means but it was a huge disappointment.

I enjoyed Sticker Star initially, but I was only approaching the end of the first world when reality settled in and I realised it suffered from some serious design flaws. And yet the great graphics, magnificent jazzy music and the same witty writing present throughout the series kept me through it. Definitely not a rushed game despite what others might say, and not particularly a bad one, but a disappointment. And a pretty big one when you consider the greatness of previous titles. But that's neither here nor there.

The reality is, all I want to see is a return to form. Miyamoto's main complaint with the direction Sticker Star was taking at first was that it was too similar to a portable TTYD. And yet literally everyone else would label that as a selling point. I'm not saying I want a carbon copy of the first two games, but there is a happy medium for innovation when it comes to beloved franchises. I can only hope Nintendo discover it for the next Paper Mario because ironically they seem to have it down for almost every other spin-off.

@CaveDweller I had the same experience. The initial impact was great but after World one, and going into World 2 especially, the game started to run downhill due to its design flaws. I still haven't beaten the final boss battle due to its ridiculous length. But the graphics are fantastic, the music is awesome as always and the writing, while underpar compared to the other three, was still good. If this was released as a standalone game and the other 3 didn't exist, this game probably would've fared better because the expectations for it were so high.

The thing is, I think everyone was EXPECTING a portable TTYD because that's what most wanted. It seems that when it comes to innovation, Nintendo doesn't really have a happy medium. Either they innovate too much (Sticker Star) or they don't innovate at all (NSMB). A return to form for the next game would be much appreciated though I do hope they reach that happy medium of innovation as well

In terms of a balance of innovation, I like to look at the Mario & Luigi game franchise; there's yet to be an instalment that fails to shake up the basic formulae established in Superstar Saga in some shape or form. They all feel similar but unique and fresh at the same time.

I don't think it's fair just to boycott sequels because their not clones of the previous ones but in the case of Sticker Star, the changes just weren't the best ones.

You hit the nail right on the head. That series keeps improving with every game released. I'm sure the next entry will be a good one no doubt, but whether it'll resonate well with all of the fanbase rather than having a split opinion is to be seen.

I agree, it really isn't. I do recommend SS to people who want a portable Paper Mario experience and who love the series through and through. Despite its flaws the game does have a lot of positives. Like I said, it's not a bad game by any means, just a disappointment. It's still a solid entry but it's just the "worst" out of the four so far.

Thousand Year Door was by far the best in my opinion. The Nintendo 64 Paper Mario was almost the same so I liked that one a lot too (I played it after Paper Mario 2 though)

Super Paper Mario was fun but I beat it completely in three days (including both pits of 100 trials)...it was extremely easy, the story was kind of boring, some parts of the game like RUNNING IN A HAMSTER WHEEL FOR 10 MINUTES really annoyed me, etc. I also hate that they took the turn-based fighting system away...that was my favorite part about the original two games. I never tried sticker star because I heard it was horrible.

Either way...if there is a new Paper Mario in the series, I would hope it's like the second game (characters join your party along the way, turn-based fighting, difficulty, another pit of 100 trials, another Doopliss style boss, badges and flower points, etc.). It would also be cool to play Luigi's story that you could purchase and read in Paper Mario 2...something about the Waffle Kingdom and saving Princess Eclair or something?

Random idea, I'd take Paper Mario 1 and 2's battles and somehow combine them with something like Radiant Historia's battles.

I think TTYD was the best overall, but Paper Mario gets alot of credit for being the original. I honestly didn't really like Super Paper Mario(I rented it, but after playing SS, I may try again), but it seems they are going for a more simple play style for the series. It justs makes RPGs look simpler, which turn many away at first glance.

I think half of Super Paper Mario's appeal, and this is from a legit fan of the game, is the creativity. Just alone what they do with the 2d to 3d gameplay and things like it, is incredibly inspired and new and stuff, especially since this is before indie gaming and their wacky new gimmicks for 2d platforming were really around, or at least known to anyone beyond a very, very small niche fanbase. Especially considering it's from Nintendo, which while can be very creative, is more creative using technology and ideas that are older but using the creativity and quality to make it new again. Super Paper Mario is very much like the indie, self-aware humor, weird 2d platformer game. It even includes pretentious "THIS IS ANNOYING GAMEPLAY ON PURPOSE!" moments here and there (though TTYD had that too).

I'd have to play it again to see how well the battles actually work and if the creativity still elevates the game to instant-classic like what I thought when I first played it.

Really, you thought SPM's story was boring? I have to say, I thought it was hands down one of the best parts. It was a darker, more character focused outing than anything I'd really come to expect from the franchise- with some moments that really pulled down hard on the heart strings. At least, that's what it was like for myself. I thought SPM was decent overall, but to me it did little to feel like a Paper Mario game at all...

Yeah, Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario are honestly comparable (in some ways superior) to most of the best JRPGs out there. The best part is, I'm not kidding.

SPM was one of the games I bought on impulse, along with my Wii system.
And my anticipation was betrayed almost immediately.

The town seemed tacky, the graphical hook gimmicky and at odds with my play style; the little blurbs of text that passed for story - inexcusable. Where had the endearing partners gone? I had grown so fond of their personality, and what were these geometric shapes that spoke to me...? shudder

Whatever irony the game had hoped to impress upon me with its minimal style, only served to inflate my lead balloon. And when the hamster antics started - it was truly the last straw. I am an extremely passionate gamer, perhaps allergic to subtle jabs about the line between gaming bliss and forced enjoyment.

I kinda liked sticker star but i miss like star power and partners and those distinct bosses like the toy box shy guys in part one i was very upset with the map system it ruined the game i was hoping for a partner the whole i even saw a picture of mario with a chain chomp so i guess i got excited for nothing super paper mario was when the series went to heck we need to go back to the way the original and ttyd was when you had peach levels and etc
My rankings
Paper Mario 64
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
Paper Mario Sticker Star
Super Paper Mario
I would like to the series go to wii u no more handheld took some sales from wii u and the game itself
Also for gameplay return to the roots established in 2001 on the n64

Here are my rankings:
4.Super Paper Mario
3.Paper Mario: Sticker Star
2.Paper Mario [N64]
1.Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
(1. if it's like how I say it) Paper Mario 5 [Future]

I say they should do these:
-bring back the partners from the first 2 games, & Kersti as partners again.
-New Partners (like a Chain Chomp, Spike Top, & Pokey)
-Old Characters from all the games
-Old Areas/Places from all the games, except Super Paper Mario
-New Characters (Rosalina, Lumas etc.)
-Old Bosses/Enemies
-New Bosses/Enemies (Wario, Waluigi, King Boo, King Bob-omb etc.)
-New Areas/Places
-Something Super Paper Mario related, like Dimentio captures Timpani & Blumiere
That's what I say should be in Paper Mario 5!

Super Paper Mario is a fun game. I still enjoy it in some parts that Thousand Year Door don't satisfy. However, Thousand Year Door is still a superb game.

I loved Super Paper Mario but i think the series need to go back to its N64 and Gamecube-roots. That is what Paper Mario is supposed to be. To take away its gameplay elements but keep the looks.. its just not sane.
