I'm the only person in the world who actually enjoyed most of Sticker Star
Sticker Star gets too much unnecessary hate, it doesn't top TTYD or SPM but I still enjoyed it. Only thing I didn't like was the story...not many original characters, we got like...what...that sticker crown thing? Bowser doesn't even talk...WTF? lol
Aside from that I enjoyed it.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I will say this, those visuals are seriously beautiful. And perhaps it won't be as bad as Sticker Star, I mean that world map shows a train and what might be a western-themed world? Maybe it won't be the generic "grass, desert, lava, etc" level types again
I have this gut feeling that Nintendo basically express ordered a bunch of Wii U games a while back, knowing they would be coming out with NX.
As a result, Amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and Paper Mario: Color Splash, all ended up being rushed out quickly.
A full Wii U Animal crossing was converted to a board game.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was stripped down to bare bones elements.
And Paper Mario: Color Splash up-resed Sticker Star models and used a similar engine.
Otherwise, Intelligent Systems doesn't usually reuse Paper Mario styles between main series games.
And before someone mentions Pokken, Star Fox: Zero, or Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE, all 3 of those games had been in development before 2015.
I'm not sure if the former 3 were really more than an idea before 2015.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

Don't forget the 3DS games. It's quite clear they rushed Mario & Luigi Paper Jam to market, and probably a few other titles on that system too.
But I wouldn't be surprised if all these games really were just thrown together quickly.
I just watched the footage from the japanese nintendo Direct...looks like you still gain coins from battles instead of EXP. Welp, it looks like once again battles have no meaning, and if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go bang my head into a wall over the fact that nintendo apparently hasn't learned a damn thing.
There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

Without being sensationalist about this, the trailer had me excited until I saw those cards and giant fan. Hopefully not every attack requires you to have/use a card. That was one of Sticker Star's missteps: why should finite resources (stickers) be depleted for the use of standard attacks? If the cards work the same way that would be disappointing.
I'm also worried about the battle system. Using cards to always start the battle will get old very fast, I think. Hopefully they won't be like the stickers in Sticker Star, but as of now, it seems like they will be like them...
I've only recently started playing the paper mario series, with the 1st on the N64 VC about a month ago. There has been a lot of negativity about this game for how it resemble Sticker Star. From what I've been reading is that The Thousand Year Door game was really good and Sticker Star was a real let down, could someone please explain to me why this is? and why they are so different?
In the NA Direct, it is suggested that the series is of the action/adventure genre. Apparently Nintendo no longer views Paper Mario as an RPG series. Too bad I can't get into the M&L series for my Mario RPG fix.

Reasons why Sticker Star is universally hated:
No new original enemies, only existing enemies from the Mario universe (TTYD had Mario universe AND new original enemies)
The only NPCs in the game are multi-colored Toads (TTYD had a gazillon new original NPCs, and took existing Mario characters and gave them unique aesthetics)
Generic worlds and locations ripped from the NSMB series
No story, just a rehash of the "Bowser kidnaps Peach" plot
No partners
Battling enemies is useless; no experience points
Those are a few issues of the game I remember, but I'm sure there's a lot more. TTYD (and the first PM game) had a great cast of characters, creative environments, an actual story, and a solid battle system. Sticker Star lacks all of those things, which is why it's despised among the Paper Mario fanbase. Color Splash looks like it's heading in the same direction as Sticker Star. It has the same artstyle, overworld, battle mechanics, and so far no new enemies. The only issue I've seen addressed so far is that the environments seem more unique, but that's it. I'm hoping this turns out to be a fun creative game with a heart and soul, but for now, me and a lot of other people are underwhelmed.
EDIT: I guess bullet points aren't working right now?
@Tops: I can pretty much confirm that Cards will replace stickers. They can be bought in the town shop (you can see it in the screeenshot used for the NL article!), they are dropped by ? blocks and by painted elements. They also use the same name of the stickers, as there is a "Worn-Out Jump x3" Card in the trailer. Also, there are Mushroom Cards like the Mushroom Stickers in Sticker Star (you can see them in the European Trailer), and the Things in battle come from Cards, too (you can see this clearly in the Japanese trailer, that shows you that you only get coins when winning a battle). The Japanese trailer also clearly shows you that equipped cards go in their spot in the upper screen, like in Sticker Star. An improvement: there is now a sign that tells you how much charged the hammer attack is, so you can know when to unleash an "Excellent" hammer attack.
An important aspect: to use the Cards you have to paint them first, and to paint them you need colors. You can see this in the hammer attack of the trailer.
@Mister_Wu: Great so now instead of having one finite resource to deal with, we now have TWO finite resources we have to worry about. God that is one thing I absolutely hated about Sticker Star. The sticker system could've been great if Mario could jump and use his hammer by default. Why do we need cards to use basic attacks? Why coudnt they just give us something to use if we were in a pinch? And now we need color to even use the stickers in the first place?!
Someone at Nintendo and/or Intelligent Systems has completely lost their mind
To be honest, if standard enemies give you colors in abundance, this might be a reason to go into battle with standard enemies. Also, the European Trailer shows you that you can have already painted cards in your deck: the Mushrooms Cards were already painted and weren't being used in that turn. It's not clear, however, if painted cards stay painted after the battle. Also, of course, boss battles will need careful design to avoid this:
Also, last detail: the max amount of colors can be increased. We can see parts of the European trailer in which the max is 100, other parts in which the max is 150, and parts in which the max is 180.
Visually it looks like one of the best games on Wii U. In terms of Gameplay I don't know how people can comment based on just a single trailer. I'm cautious about this after the previous instalment but I think the reaction some people are having is a bit over the top.
I guess it being Paper Mario on the Wii U there was only one possible reaction. People love to whine about both lately and this is both at the same time.
