I thought the Wii U had a dvd drive lol. I don't have a blu-ray player, this feels like an incredible waste of potential. Dvd movies might of been redundant but not not Blu Ray! Heck the PS3 started of as a Blu Ray player, that could also play games.
Not all countries have uncapped mobile internet. Would of been great to be able to watch a blue ray movie offscreen with my headphones attached while the others watch theri soaps and sport.
edit: Here's another idea, what about the ability to play a movie on the big screen, with the option to play a virtual console game offscreen at the same time.
Same with DVD ability. Nintendo would have pay to who ever owns the DVD technology. They also figured that people by a Wii U to play games not to watch movies and that they have other means in their houses to watch DVDs like a DVD player or a computer at least thats what the President of Nintendo said we asked about DVD playback. Besides DVD players are cheap enough now if you really need one.

DVD maybe, but not Blu Ray. Blu Ray players are way more expensive, less common. I just want a high quality picture, with the option of watching it whilst taking a dump on the toilet.
people screamed and threw hissy fits over the Wii U price at launch already, though. imagine if they had to pay a licensing fee to Sony on top of that for Blu-Ray playback? People would've been frothing at the mouth, complaining that they already have devices to watch movies/blu-ray discs on and whatnot and why is the price so high and blah-blah-blah... can't please 'em all.

IMO Blue-Ray is overrated. I have a Blue-Ray drive in my 1-2 year-old laptop, and I've never used it. Kind to think of it, I really only use disk players nowadays to install the occasional piece of software.

I agree. To be honest I have a Blu Ray player hooked up to my TV and I have a few movies on Blu Ray mainly Thor and Hunger Games. I honestly dont see any difference when I watch a DVD or a Blu Ray.
I can see a definition difference between bluray and DVD, but the cost difference doesn't match. I sorinkle in a bluray here and there, but all my 500+ DVDs are just fine.
As others have said, BluRay is owned by Sony and Nintendo would never pay them for that license. DVD maybe, but who even cares about DVDs anymore? A new DVD player is like $10 at WalMart, and a new BluRay player is like $70 at WalMart. So "meh" on the U not playing that.
I'm more irritated that the TVii features don't work like they promised. They could OWN the livingroom if they made that work right with the U controller. Now the new Xbox (POS) is going to make a play for that space.
I wish they would at least release an app on the eShop that gave us the option to pay the license to watch DVDs and Blu-rays. If they really want the Wii U to be the primary entertainment device in my living room, it shouldn't be competing with my Blu-ray player for my HDMI connection. I honestly believe the reason they don't allow us to pay the license is because they're worried about extra wear-and-tear on the drive causing them to have to service more systems still under warranty. At one point they had talked about the Wii eventually including DVD playback, but that never materialized.
