Topic: Oh Dear. Stolen console? No worries, Nintendo will transfer your account...

...as long as you can supply them with a valid police report.

At least we know it's POSSIBLE, but seriously? Nintendo should have implemented accounts a LONG time ago. This just makes them look positively prehistoric.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

@GuardianKing: basically, they're asking for you to prove that the console was indeed stolen before they'll transfer everything over to you. when i finally got a replacement for my original 3DS I did call and ask about it, and they said they'd be willing to transfer my account and stuff (including my Ambassador status, the few DSiWare titles i'd transferred over, friend code, etc.) but first i'd need to fax them over a copy of the police report... but since i didn't file one, i was SOL. i don't remember asking if i'd have to send it in or if they could do it remotely, though.

@theblackdragon So your 3ds got stolen and you didn't report it to the police? Then it's clearly your own fault and I don't want people like you to ruin system based accounts, which is the greatest thing ever no matter what anybody says.

If your system gets stolen you report it to the police, your insurance company and Nintendo, if it breaks you contact your insurance company and Nintendo.
In both cases everything should work out as those types of things generally do.

I take it your one of those persons who like to memorize a gazillion different passwords or one of those people who use the same password in gazillion different places, in which case you're screwed when they hack Nintendo.

So....It's the best thing ever because memorizing a password is too much work? Huh.

It's not too much work to memorize one password, it's too much work to memorize a gazillion passwords and anything that makes that burden even a little bit easier is greatly appreciated.

System based accounts are ridiculous. There is no reason for accounts to be linked to a system rather than the owner, 'no matter what anybody says'.

if TBD's actions did anything to ruin the current system, then kudos to her. Somehow, I seriously doubt it made any difference since we are still stuck with it.

But if your console is stolen, you lose your account too. It would be a hindrance to get that account back rather than simply getting another system and entering ONE password for your account if Nintendo used owner-based accounts.

Exactly. Just like it's too much work to be nice and respectful towards other users and a mod.

Not TBD by herself but people like her who whine about system based accounts, and apparently that includes you too.

Well congratulations to all of you, your wish will be granted.
As stated in the opening link:

@tat2: by the time i realized it was gone, i was already home. i didn't know what to do or who to ask — wal-mart has signs up saying they can't take responsibility for what goes on in the parking lot, lock your vehicles, etc. etc., and the deductible on my insurance is $500 or so. they'd make me shell out for it myself anyway if i reported it, and I didn't have the money to buy another. in all honesty i felt so stupid for having had it happen in the first place that I was honestly prepared to just go on without one until some very good friends of mine pitched in to buy me a replacement.

thank you ever so much for telling me everything i should've done, though — i'm so glad you have all the answers. I only hope if something like that ever happens to you that you're able to navigate the situation as efficiently as you've explained to me, because the world is totally a perfect place and things always work out that way.

i'm going to ask you now to stop being a jerk to me personally about it — Nintendo has been offering account transfers in terms of theft ever since the DSi hit. My situation is nothing new. this will be the only time I ask.

I suggest people duct tape their 3DS to their bodies to prevent it from being stolen when out and about until Nintendo implements their account system later this year.

I'm just one password away from accessing my account from any system, even if mine is stolen! Yay for fewer burdens!!

@tat2 BTW: coming across as rude and superior doen't make u right. Your opinion is just that: an opinion. No more important than mine or anyone elses.

You seem to be the only one whining.
