Topic: Off-TV Play vs. New Gameplay

So before anyone else says it, why not both?

Alright, so I was wondering about this and wanted to hear from other gamers. Off-TV Play is a great feature and easy to implement for thise devs that don't want to do something unique and people love the feature. The question is would you rather have Off-TV Play or the game use the GamePad's unique abilities?

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I'd rather have the dual screen gaming going on. I can understand that off-TV might be pretty awesome, especially with a good pair of headphones, but I do think that there will be some extreme cases where off-TV just isn't viable for a game to be played.

ZombiU and Lego City are the games I can think of that you basically need to use 2 screens. I'd want to see more of that used in very effective ways.

I tried playing a few games off-TV when I didn't have a decent TV to play on. The picture itself is decent enough to play on(being 480p), but the sound quality seems kind of lacking. For people playing Wii U games on off-TV, I recommend getting a good stereo or surround headset.

I was looking for a good pair of surround sound headphones that I can just plug into the headphone jack on either the GamePad or my AV receiver, but they usually charge alot, because they're giving you the drivers to run the surround sound. Since I already have the drivers, there's no need to charge me for anything beside the actual headset, and that doesn't seem to be an option on any pair of headphones that I've come acroos so far.

If a developer can use the Gamepad in interesting ways and is willing to take the time to implement them, then they can do so. If they don't want to bother using the Gamepad for anything special, then they should just slap Off-TV play into it and be done with it. Activating Off-TV play only takes one line of code. As I said in other thread here, 3rd-party developers feel they "must" use the Gamepad in some special manner in order to port their games over when Nintendo has never required it in the first place. I would rather they slap on Off-TV play than get no game because of their presumption that the Gamepad must be used for something more.

Off-TV all day. Heck, most of the year my Wii U isn't even connected to a TV because I love the oversized GBA feeling

This thread is pretty old, but since someone bumped it, I'd say the Bluedio R+ headphones are the way to go for now. I don't have them, but those are the ones I want. They absolutely DESTROY Beats in quality, features, and are less than half the price. Just more proof that Beats are beat; pun intended.

Definitely new gameplay experiences. I don't need to have access to my console all the time. If the TV is in use, I'll just jump on my PC or pull out my Kindle.

The entire reason why I have a Wii U instead of the other consoles are because it provides experiences I can't get in other places. The gamepad use was so much fun in ZombiU, it really made the game so much more immersive than it would have been without it.

Both, depends on the game. For a game I'm going to spend time playing on-TV then sure, do something cool with it. For some games I'm more interested in just playing off-TV. Like Mario Kart, PullBlox or any of the VC content.

I don't, it's the dumbest marketing gimmick ever. You only have two ears and headphones cover your ears entirely. You only need two headphone speakers for surround. Also if you don't believe me....

Me and you share the same feelings on the Gamepad.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

@skywake
I already knew that. A high quality pair of headphones is still better than a low quality pair of headphones, though. I'm using some cheapo $10 ones with the Wii U logo on it, that I got at Best Buy.

Depends on the game, I think for more tradtional games off TV play is all you really need.

You knew that but you said the stupid thing anyways. Meh. Oh well, if you're after headphones just take this universal suggestion from me. Just get the pair of Sennheisers that sit in the price bracket you're happy to pay. There, done, no research necessary.

And yes to your other post, Beats are garbage.

Well, to be fair, I did ALOT of research after I posted that, so it is actually technically kind of dumb. The Bluedio R+ ones are the type of headphones I'm looking for. They have NFC, bluetooth 4,0, 8 drivers, and have more features and quality than any other NIB headphone for that price(as far as I'm aware, and I've looked VERY hard).

I already have a 7.2 surround system, which is why off-TV play isn't really ideal, in the first place. I would mainly be using these for my 3DS XL and the RARE time that I actually need them for off-TV play or something else. I looked at the Senheisers, but again, these better suit what I want, and are still a good deal cheaper.

It really depends on what Senheisers you're specifically talking about, but it's pretty likely I already saw them. With the current information I have, the Bludio R+ are 100% the headphones I would buy; no exceptions.

If they use it like ZombiU then they can ditch the off tv play, but the best scenario is something like Arkham City:AE which actually makes it works both with unique abilities and with off tv play.

The funny thing is...this is an argument toward the Wii U, but not the PS4 or One. New Gameplay, I mean. The PS4's touchpad adds nothing a select button, which they got rid of for the Share button, couldn't have done and the Kinect 2.0 was done away with because Microsoft didn't like people whining about it.

The Wii U offers both new gameplay opportunities (in Batman Arkham City, Zombi U, Lego City, and other minor add-ons) and Off TV play. However, this is nonsense or pointless to so many.

I would prefer Off TV play out of the two since I know third parties can at least take enough time out of their day to make sure THAT works properly.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.

because this is a Wii U forum. I was mainly asking for a design choice for a game I am designing. (Not in Development Yet or possibly ever)
