Topic: Not sure how to feel about Nintendo/Wii U now

I said for months that between the older HD console and 3DS that early sales mean nothing in the long run for a console's success. I still believe this is true (though I agree it is bad that this does happen for any system), so I found it a dumb idea for most people to try to have a real valid opinion on Nintendo before they showed what they had at E3. This is especially true considering the times Nintendo have saved their reputation for gaming largely because of strong E3 showings (2010 especially). Now that E3 is pretty much over, I'm not gonna be that annoyed by people's opinions because of that.

But ironically, I have no idea what to think of Wii U at this time. There are several reasons for this:

1. How exciting the E3 Direct was (it wasn't) or if it has a lot of games that I feel would be great and completely worth buying (it does, thx indies btw)
2. How successful Wii U probably will be or maybe people will finally be sick of Nintendo's overabundance of sequels with new IPs being unusually important this E3. (2.5 being that some of the new IPs from other companies I could easily see ending up being generic and/or boring tbh.)
3. If it is successful, do I care or should I just consider it a success for specifically having games that are both exciting and great, despite any success or lack thereof.
4. How much Nintendo succeeding or not succeeding with or without 3rd parties is good or bad (this is four different scenarios possibly, 8 with the good/bad options).

The one I feel will probably be true is that they are focusing on some samey titles for now for the sake of being successful and hopefully 3rd party and originality from Nintendo will be better off because of it. But right now I'm just not sure.

this was a weird E3. Especially since I was expecting it to be as boring as last year's. So much for PAX replacing it?

One thing I am certain of is that Nintendo's biggest mistake is Retro not having at least twice as many employees so they can make more awesome games.

I too am starting to feel concerned for Wii U's future. But regardless of what goes down, I'm staying by Nintendo's side till the bitter end should things go that way. And should the unthinkable indeed happen, I'm turning my back to video games for good.

Everyone around me wants a Wii U, throughout my workplace and school. I say "are you sure?" and they say that they were convinced with Super Smash Bros.

Look at Nintendo's holiday line up, it is actually impressive.

August: Pikmin 3, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Disney Infinite, and Splinter Cell Blacklist.
September: Rayman Legends and The Wonderful 101
October: Wii U Party, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Just Dance 2014, and Skylanders Swap Force
November: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Legend fo Zelda A Link Between Worlds, and Watch_Dogs
December: Super Mario 3D World

Then there are some others without announced release dates.

Summer: Duck Tales Remastered and Cloudberry Kingdom
Holiday: Sonic Lost Worlds and Scribblenauts Unmasked

Along with some titles planned for 2014.

Mario Kart 8
Bayonetta 2
Yoshi's New Island

Plus way more that I can't think of

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I think that as soon as the currently announced games are released, Nintendo will finally have a good base of games available. The install base will certainly increase with Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 and SSBU, and the other titles will help as well.

As long as Nintendo can continue delivering their top-notch games, it's all good.

I think the wiiu will be ok, no great but ok eventually. Thus holiday release schedule is not going to do it but once mario kart hits and X hits things will pick up. Unfortunately those releases are about a year away or more.

If by some chance the Wii U never picks up in sales and fails, Nintendo could always lean on their successful 3DS for the generation while they try to make a new console that will be more up to date with the technology to properly be treated as a next gen console alongside the PS5 & XBOX TWO.

a) Does it really matter? Are fanboys so desperate for conflict, that this matters? and b) because it's a successful long-running brand? Did you criticize Nintendo for their naming of the GameBoys: GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, etc. It's a huge brand-name, therefore why would you change it?

I didn't see enough at E3 to convince me I need a Wii U at this point. I don't care much for Nintendoland. Maybe a price drop combined with a bundle I care about would change my mind. I'm a little disappointed that there is another Donkey Kong game instead of Star Fox or Metroid.

You're realizing what many of us have seen for months now.
In the grand scheme of things its probably better that the Wii U flops so Nintendo has a reason to get their act together.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I have no problem with Nintendo going for casual games that are quick and cheap to make, in order for them to get the hardware sales they need to show that the Wii U is not the next Sega Saturn. What worries me is that I'm not sure Nintendo see this as just a quick fix, but maybe that is their main target market now. Maybe they want to mainly make games that a family can sit around playing for 20 minutes and then turn off.

I'll be holding off on a Wii U until they start showing me games made for hardcore Nintendo fans (and not just hardcore Nintendo cheerleaders that will champion anything they put out).

I agree with @Peach64(and @WingedFish on supporting Nintendo 'till they're gone, though it won't make me quit video games as a whole, I'll just move to PC). I already have a Wii U and I'm looking forward to many major titles coming to it, but I really hope that Nintendo don't make this kind of game every single time after this, like NSMB, no matter how fun that it might be...

Just play your Wii U and have fun, man.

I really hate the internet in certain ways. I wish I never got into the whole forums/gaming sites thing. "Back in the day," my friends and I would just play N64 and Gamecube, happy as could be, totally oblivious to the fact that both consoles actually didn't perform that well. We didn't care about E3 "winners" and debates over "next gen" and specs. Heck, my one friend (we're in a our late twenties now, by the way) who doesn't really pay attention to game websites and forums still talks about the Gamecube with such reverence like it was the best thing ever. But you hop online and, aside from places like this, see constant comments like "Nintendo has another Gamecube on their hands." See... my friend doesn't care about this stuff because he doesn't even know it exists. And he's so much happier for it.

On that note, I took my Wii U to his house last night (no internet connection required! ha) and a whole bunch of us played Nintendoland for hours and hours. We were laughing and shouting so much that I lost my voice. That's how much fun this console is. If the Wii U is never a commercial success, I really don't care. I know it's given my some unique gaming moments that can't be replicated on other consoles or even my gaming PC, and for that, it's totally an awesome system.

To be honest this Nintendo Direct E3 was the first time I've legitimately felt worried about Nintendo. I understand they're playing it safe because they need the money right now, but this will only work for so long. If they keep this up Nintendo could seriously be in trouble in the future.
