It's not clear what it is, which is what's nice. Hopefully, this thing can be an explosive success like the Wii. It doesn't matter if it's video-gamey or not. It's a third prong, it has nothing to do with Wii U or 3DS, although it will be able to communicate them.

This was the best news of the press conference, because even if sales on Wii U don't improve drastically, Nintendo will hopefully have another stream of revenues to compensate come 2015.

I'm excited for this. I want all Nintendo fans(myself included) to become fitness addicts and brag to the other gamers how we have both games and health

So why is everyone thinking the non-wearable/Quality of Life ideas are going to be fitness related?

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Iwata talked about Health and improving one's "Quality of Life" so I guess many just assumed fitness was part of it.

I thought he brought that stuff up when talking about Entertainment. The Non-Wearable/Quality of Life sounds to me like Nintendo is just trying to get ahead of SmartPhones and SmartGlasses. To "leapfrog" to the next big tech advancement

EDIT: Ok I am watching the GameExplain video about this and they bring up how it could be the Brain Ages, LifeStyle, Wii Fit, and those types of games could become their own platform so that their other departments can focus on Games as we know them then have this 3rd Pillar take over the more Casual stuff

Video game market is in danger. Serious danger. And Nintendo seems to have problems with video games - they aren't making what most people want. The Wii was what people wanted. A new fresh 2D Mario game! Sports! Arcadey fun! Invite the neighborhood!

Here's my analysis after reading blogs and news and articles
xBox is looking to be spinned off by Microsoft if investors get their way - and mark my words, they will. xBox is a failure, and simply doesn't mesh with the rest of the company.
Playstation 4 is too young, but is still a strong brand. Vita is still an abject failure..
Nintendo Wii U and 3DS are both huge disasters. 3DS is the n64 to the SNES in the handhelds market. Investors are getting angry. 2D Mario is close to being ruined, and if that really, truly happens, Nintendo will be worse off than Sega. Nintendo has the skill to make proper games, games that people with lives actually wan to play (and thus make them a profit. Profit drives innovation). They don't want to! They have screwed up Mario! Big trouble there, it's no wonder that Nintendo is trying to branch out.

So, me and my mom were talking about Nintendo's "QOL" device, and what it might be... if it's not a console or handheld, not a phone or tablet, non-wearable... the only thing we could think of else that it could be is...

So this is what I'm getting from all of this: Nintendo is trying to do something potentially non-videogame related, and it is freaking the **** out of people. We need to remember something, though. Nintendo wasn't always a videogame company. Videogames were something they branched out to because their current market was depleted. The same thing seems to be happening here. Videogames aren't doing well right now profit-wise, so Nintendo is looking for other ways to make money. Now that is not to say Nintendo is abandoning videogames altogether. They're just trying to wait out the storm, so to speak. When the videogame market swings back around, Nintendo will be waiting to innovate the hell out of it with buckets of cash made on other projects. That seems to be the plan anyway... but this just some random guy on the internet rambling away, so what do I know? Only time will tell.

At first I too was confused about what this could be, however they realise that the Balance Board and Wii Fit created this new low-cost market, not just for fitness but also in the medical world (longtime site readers might remember that I and others covered more than a few uses of the Wii Remote and Balance Board as alternatives to far more expensive therapies and equipment ).

They are probably thinking that risking the loss of that market because of lack of Wii U sales isn't worth it, so having a standalone fitness device (I'm thinking a Gamepad you can connect to your TV that just runs Wii Fit U and can sync with a Balance Board and two Remote Plus units - though it could take a completely different form) would help ensure they keep that revenue stream without cannibalising console sales because the people who are interested in the lifestyle device wouldn't have bought a Wii U otherwise.

So no, this isn't really about the Wii U, but it is a consequence of realising that they're probably not going to sell a Wii U to everyone who currently owns a Balance Board. A lower-cost Wii Fit device is something they have a better chance of selling to that market and might be enough to pick up the Wii U slack if it sold in Wii Fit numbers.

Sure, Wii Fit sold like hotcakes on the Wii... But we are quickly realizing the Wii's sales, along with it's software and add-ons, was an anomaly of sorts. It captured people's curiosity at a time when consumer devices were in their infancy. I'm doubting Wii Fit will do very well on the Wii U simply because people have "been there and done that." I think grabbing the casuals' attention is going to be a hard sell this time around, even with a fitness angle. My parents own just about every single peripheral that came out with the Wii - Balance Board, floor mats, Link's archery thing, etc. because they wanted to recapture that "active fun" of Wii Sports. But they grew bored with each new device/ game rather quickly, and now it's all fossilizing in a cabinet.

But it sounds like Ninty is working on something brand-new, and just siting Wii Fit as a success story in the same realm as their new concepts... So here's hoping they knock this new idea out of the park.

We also live in a world of Fitbits, Jawbones, Pebbles, Xboz Fitness.

Nintendo can barley compete with Sony and Microsoft when it comes too consumer electronics, so I'm a bit pessmestic that they comepete in the QOL market which is much more cutting edge and has bigger players like Google (Self Driving Cars, WiFi ballooning, Nest, Google Now, contacts), Microsoft Research. Plus up and commers like Fitbit and Square.

I'm worried its a big gamble and to get any real gains in the market you have to have a really good base idea and want to spend more than the usual conservative nintendo is used too. If the QOL pays off it could mean massive dividends for the company, but if it fails it could be worse for the company than the Wii U is.

Though that's under the assumoyion they're going fit the mass market opposed to something that targets education or familes.
