Topic: No Triggers on Gamepad/Gamepad Pro!?

Hmm, what gives? For games like Racing Games that feature SOME realism, trigger-controls are a must, How are they going to work around it? Any ideas? Awesome Racinggame Project Cars is scheduled to hit on Wii U next year and its one of the most sophisticated sims I've ever played even in early alpha state already, so I am wondering: Why? Whats wrong with triggers, gamecube had them and they were awesome!

Thoughts?

EDIT: Oh, and the Pro controller actually will have triggers.

Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

@Treverend Look at the pictures of the Pro controller. I'm pretty sure it has analog triggers.

Why do we need analog triggers for a racing game? Triggers? Honestly? Every racing game I have ever owned has used one of the face buttons for acceleration and deceleration. There have been a few games with driving segments I've played that used the analog sticks (Left for forward, reverse and Right for left, right.). How come the analog triggers are so necessary for racing games? And besides all that, I have never played a game where analog triggers meant anything. Of course I focus on using the analog stick gently when I need to walk instead of run full boar into a hoard of enemies, but I have never wanted to lightly push the Right Trigger/ R button to gently...shoot?

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.

@kyuubikid213: It's to simulate the pedals for a MUCH smoother acceleration than a digital face button.
And analog triggers have been well used in a number of instances and genres. In Super Mario Sunshine, it let you control the strength of your water stream. In Luigi's Mansion, it was the strength of the vacuum. It's also been used in shooters (halfway is a single shot, full is auto fire, or half is a regular shot and full charges the laser or the depth of the depression affects the speed of the minigun... whatever). There are a dozen other documented uses for it that I'm not going to sit and list out.

At any rate, the exclusion is dumb. It's an additional control feature. If a developer wanted digital secondary triggers, all they'd have to do is make it so that any press (or a full press) of the trigger performs the action. But if they want to use it, it's another feature available. It's like motion control. It's nice for those who want to use it to have it and makes play experiences more varied... but if you don't want to use it, just use the face buttons on the Wiimote. It's that simple. it's an addition and in no way a detriment, and in my opinion, it's a stupid oversight on Nintendo's part. Not one that will likely cost them anything... but it wouldn't have cost them anything to have one more positive notch on the Wii U's belt, either.

Racing games (the sim ones) are best played with a wheel and pedal setup - though this is mainly on pc, the next best
Thing to have control over your throttle, gripslip and such is analogue triggers, like that other mate pointed out there area my other uses as well and completely ignoring it is like a step back in time, it's especially sad that with project cars wii u has a proper aim coming that an be adjusted to be arcadY as much as you want it to be. Since I have a racing setup on my pc it won't affect me much personally but it's just one of those Nintendo decisions that make no sense at all. Reminds me of the time where apple (I'm happy mac user) insisted on the one button mouse to "make things simple"...

Been typing on iPhone please ignore things
That don't make sense...

I just really wonder what reasoning is behind that decision, on one hand they go for motion control, nfc, touchscreen and say they want to win back the (hard)core crowd this time around and then they omit something simple as analogue shoulder triggers that has proven to be gaming-standard nowadays. I wonder if it is an actual decision against it, an overlook or maybe some patent-problem?

I'm still confused as to why the decision to not have analog triggers is so bad. I haven't played a game where I needed to have analog triggers. Even in racing games. In all seriousness, why would you want to be able to press not as hard to go slower? In a racing game? For the analog sticks, okay, whatever, but not the analog triggers. I want to go as fast as possible in a racing game. Not to mention, no other game I have played uses the analog functionality in a way that makes me notice it.

But another reason why I don't get why you are getting upset is because the Wii U is supposed to be compatible with all of the Wii's accessories. This would logically include the Wii Classic Controller. It has analog shoulder buttons if I'm not mistaken. And if it doesn't oh well.

And another thing to add...we can still get GameCube VC even without the analog triggers. Luigi's Mansion is coming out on the 3DS. As far as I know, the 3DS shoulder buttons aren't analog and it looks like it works on there without having to adjust your vaccuum suction.

Bottom Line: I don't see why this is such a big deal. For shooters (the only real franchise I see use these to death) if you want one shot, just press it once. Hold for automatic. For racing games, I don't like using the triggers anyway. If I want realistic driving, I'll go in my actual car or go to an arcade with the pedal and steering wheel.

Wait so because you sick at racing games than there shouldn't be automatic triggers. And the Luigi's mansion is a whole new games and not a port so we don't know how they are handling it.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is for the 3DS. If it were to come out on VC on the Wii U (which is what we are talking about) it would be a port of the Gamecube one.

Unless your talking about Luigi's Ghost Mansion on Nintendoland... that's not the same control, and has nothing to do with this discussion.

I really wonder if you ever played a racing game. Im not talking about Mario Kart, Im talking about SIMULATIONS. Always going full throttle is not winning you anything. Not in real life, not in a proper racing simulation. If you have a 400 hp car you don't want to FLOOR the gas pedal (which a digital button is basicly) coming out of a corner, you need to be easy on the throttle and gradually up your pressure on it or you will spin out.

Digital buttons work for FUNracers (nothing wrong with that) only but won't work with any simulation racing game.

As for triggers being used in shooters, again Im wondering what shooters did you play? All shooters I played DID use the Triggers (hey its a TRIGGER after all) for shooting, but not one of them was like press lightly = single shot / press all the way down = full auto. Maybe again it's because I play shooters (IF I play them) that simulate reality to some degree, where you switch between single, 2-burst, 3-burst or auto fire with a SWITCH (a seperate button on the controller) and the trigger does just what it's supposed to do: shoot after you press it like halfway.

Im not attacking you personally, but I just don't like that people defend a bad decision that leads to an important feature missing from a brand new console just because they don't get their facts straight. And of course I couldn't care less since I have a PC for racing games and shooters as well as an XBOX 360, but I always loved NIntendo and it doesn't look good if they're saying they want to bring back hardcore gamers to the system and then they omit a very important, yet simple feature on their controller. But again Im suspecting maybe it has something to do with some patent they didnt get, like the controller is too much similar in shape to the XBOX 360 controller that MS holds a patent on that maybe only the EXKLUSION of analogue triggers let them do it like they did - or something fancy like that.

Again if you think racing is about holding the throttle down you've never played a simulation or driven a car - which is no personal attack, just an observation!

Oh and I want to add, really its no big deal (if you're are racing game fan ONLY you wouldn't get a Wii U anyways) but still I don't get the reasoning behind that decision of Ninty.

Nintendo hasn't yet revealed whether the buttons are analog or not.

People are assuming that they're not. The buttons are squishy so for all we know they could be analog.
