I saw this link on Reddit today and thought it might spark an interesting discussion.

TL;DR version of the article: While Nintendo isn't pushing forward the medium anymore or pushing boundaries in any genre, they are still making (on average) very good games that are fun to play. Some people feel like Nintendo should be pushing boundaries because the company has done it before and that's where a large part of the discontent for Nintendo's current business practices comes from. Shunning Nintendo's games for "Not Being Good Enough" to the standards of revolution/grand evolution is over-judgmental and we should appreciate the company's games for what they (usually) are; really good.

I... don't really know what to say. Lol I mean, Nintendo makes fun and memorable games. They make games I will never forget about and I strongly recommend to others. I think they are fine. Every now and then they get a really awesome exclusive Mature game (example: Resident Evil: Revelations and Bayonetta 2). Well, Resident Evil: Revelations 3D was an exclusive for a good while until Capcom heard the backlash from diehard RE fans over RE6 but ah.... I'm rambling XD ANYWAY.. I think Nintendo is fine. They need to focus on more open world games like Monolith's X, bring back Mario Strikers (the Wii version was amazing), and use legendary IPs that people are itching to play. Lol does my answer make sense? XD

I read this last night. It is a very well written article that actually analyzes and provides valid points. This is rare for IGN but I loved the article and completely agree with it. I didn't catch any negative or biased context in it but I'm sure it will get a storm of hate in this forum.

It's actually fairly well-written and provides an interesting perspective on Nintendo's current strategy. I don't necessarily agree with the perspective in some areas, but it's interesting none-the-less.

It's an interesting article, but I think it overcomplicates a few very simple points (that explain Nintendo's actions):

1. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

2. 'Innovation' doesn't make a great game

I think the latter sums up why Nintendo's recent decisions are good more than anything else. People over value 'creativity' nowadays and seem incapable of just enjoying a good game that does what it sets out to do without pushing boundaries.

Amen to that

And another Amen. It's sad watching gaming get more popular only to then be embroiled in more politics. After this gen I'm expecting the next set of console reveals to be on par with the second debate between Romney and Obama.

I've never had to worry about Nintendo. Not even since being active on the Internet game sites where people sometimes try to scare or intimidate other people about the things they like.

For years now, year after year I'm still playing fun video games that have the characters I've liked since forever.
Nintendo employees feel the same way and other fans feel the same way and magically things keep in motion. And will for years to come.

I just get sick of people saying that violent games are somehow "mature". Personally, I think violent games are the most immature games out there.

Sometimes I catch myself doubting Nintendo's efforts in the marketplace, but I usually conclude that I don't care one way or the other. As long as Nintendo remains firmly dedicated to making good games (this was reinforced by the Platinum games interview) Nintendo has no peer in their space.

When you first start out, whatever kind of artist you are, you push boundaries. Why? Because you have to. You are an individual. You have something unique to say. And you need to push boundaries in order to say it, because nobody's ever said it before quite the way you will.

As you continue to grow as an artist, you need to push fewer and fewer boundaries. Not because you have less to say, but because you've already carved out a space in which you can say it, and a space in which folks are comfortable when you say it.

You can't keep pushing boundaries forever, because if you do you're pushing them for the sake of pushing them. And that helps nobody. It does no good to push boundaries because, hey, might as well. That's when you've officially started trying too hard. You push boundaries when you need to push them. When you don't, you do brilliant things WITHIN boundaries. And there's no serious artist alive that would tell you any differently.

Quite how "quality" and "boundary pushing" started going hand in hand in the mind of gamers is beyond me. I'd rather have a great game that pushes no boundaries than a mediocre game that pushed boundaries that did it no good. One of them I might admire in some sort of passing way for what it attempted to do...but I know which one I'd actually spend my time playing.

Does this still apply to COD? Cause far too many just bash on people who play COD(which includes a lot from this site).
[EDIT: Instead I should had asked all shooters]
My opinion on games is the same as with many things. If you don't like the game someone is playing then don't play it. You don't have to bash them just cause they like something different than you.

Technology advances, anyway. Nintendo got Linear PCM 5.1, Bluetooth 4.0, high-capacity discs, SD cards, TVs, etc.

Nintendo doesn't development those other technologies. They just make sure their system is compatible with modern gadgets.

If you look at everything inside of the Wii U(hardware), it can do basically anything your modern devices will support.

My point is that technology is not under just 1 or 2 company's control, and sometimes it's best to leave advancements in technology fields such as Bluetooth, 3D, digital sound reproduction, etc. to the companies that do it best.

The reason why I brought up hardware, is because that's generally looked at as a real reason why people complain about Nintendo.

All these companies have their fans, and I think it's best to just leave it at that.

IDK lately I feel like Nintendo is lacking in all departments. I don't know why but the games they've made lately (which are fun btw) don't seem to be as memorable as the games they made back in my childhood. I feel as if lately they're just making games to try and survive in the gaming industry instead of actually pushing the boundaries with innovation and new creative ideas also that Nintendo magic that they usually have seems to be gone from some of their games as of late. It feels like all of this started happening during the last couple of years of the Wii's life when they had absolutely no third party support and we were having a drought of games and then the 3DS came out and it bombed. It felt like at first Nintendo was just trying to revive the 3DS and once that happened then the 3DS started getting better, but then the Wii U is bombing now so it feels like all their power is going into trying to save it. Hopefully once they manage to save the Wii U they can get back to being the same Nintendo I used to know and love. The other thing Nintendo fails to realize is that we now live in a world where people are just nuts over technology and they want the most powerful/recent/shiniest/popular piece of tech out there and well using tech that's considered underpowered or outdated isn't going to cut it with most people.

I know thats your opinion but I disagree on some things. The Wii had third party support. You just had to find it. Go on Gamestop or another website and look at the complete Wii library of games. The Wii DID get thrid party support. It wasn't massive but it was there. Nintendo is the only company that only works on games. Sony has television and movies and Microsoft has computers. Nintendo has STILL been making a profit....just on games ALONE. Nintendo has not been struggling that bad and is not "just making games to try and survive in the game industry". Yeah, the Wii U is struggling but its gonna get crazy better in the upcoming months. Just because a console has high tech and power doesn't even mean its gonna get great games. High tech and huge power means is that the games are gonna look more pretty that usual...and apparently... that the game can do MORE than usual. I mean, the TONE of your comment sound so depressing and sad, man. Nintendo is not doing that bad. Its sad to hear that you feel like none of their recent games haven't been memorable to you. I feel sorry for the people who blindly think a console/handheld needs tons of power to become worthy of buying. Thats not true. Just ask Sony and how they are dealing with the Vita. I'm not trashing the Vita because I like it alot. But the Vita definetly shows that high tech does not mean a bunch of consistent must buy exclusive games. There WILL be a time period where the PS4 and Xbox One struggle. Its inevitable. I expect those consoles to struggle shortly after the launch hype fades away. I don't want those consoles to struggle but I know its inevitable. OH MAN... I am rambling. Lol I'm sorry. I'll just skip to the point. In my opinion... When I see a trailer for Monolith's X, when I see how Nintendo and Gamefreak are making Pokemon X/Y the most anticipated handheld game of all time, when I hear that Atlus and Nintendo are making a Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem crossover for Wii U... I know... in my heart... that Nintendo is still doing innovation right. ^.^

There are moments where I wished the Wii U had more power... and thats only for games like Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV and Witcher 3. THOSE are the times where I wished Nintendo cared alot more about raw power.
