So I setup Nintendo TVii on my Wii-U I can't seem to access any channels, does my TV have to have a cable connection or does the Wii U itself act as a sort of a digital box?

The wii u gamepad just acts like a universal remote. You have to switch your tv over to whatever you have hooked up to the tv (your cable box, satellite receiver or antenna). You also should make sure you've gone into the wii u setup and configure what brand of tv you have and what brand of satellite or cable box you've got.

So the Wii U cannot act as a stand alone cable box? The TV itself already has to be hooked up to one?

Ugh, and I was so looking forward to that since my room is the only room in the house without cable.

Would've been cool if they did add cable functionality to it where you could plug cable into it directly, but I imagine Microsoft's next system will be the only one to do that.
