More importantly the last Killer Instinct title was released 17 years ago. All of those other titles you mentioned have seen (more or less) a steady flow of releases throughout the years and were proven earners. Reviving a dead franchise is a pretty big risk.

Good point. Their involvement w/ the Xbox 360 makes this unlikely, and chances are while they aren't doing anything awesome like Banjo-Kazooie right now, they're probably making a killing off all their work on XBL & Kinect. However, if this is true, I hope it works out because I want something awesome. Not avatars on my 360 and a couple Kinect games, because the only nice thing about them is that the avatars are kinda cool, namely how you can customize them w/ clothes much more than you can w/ Mii characters (limited to just hats, and that's 3DS only). Well, while I use my Wii more for Mii stuff & sports games like Wii Sports, it's also nice to have those things as options on my 360 as well, though I don't use it for that. But you get the point: I'd like more from them.

Again, the only reason for that being the fact that Microsoft shot down the demo, which was around the time era of GameCube, XBox, PlayStation 2, etc. I'm sure given the chance to shine online, it could've possibly made a bigger impact, also for possible future iterations.

I'd be happier if Nintendo was doing everything in their power to NOT acquire Rare. Give it up, they have been rubbish for years. No one wants them.

You might have a point, but that last Banjo-Kazooie game on the 360 is a glimmer of hope for me.

I would be extremely disappointed if this were true. If Nintendo were going to acquire a studio, it should a really talented developer who deserves it, not a company that wastes their time making Kinect games. They need a studio who is great now, not one who used to be good.

Wish they would try and nab Jet Force Gemini too...really wanted to see a sequel for that game.

I'd rather see Nintendo acquire Sega. Though very unlikely, I still see that as more likely than Rare going back to them.

RoboConker

I hope Nintendo buy's Rare back so we can get all the awesome N64 RARE games on the Virtual Console.
Over the years Microsoft has cancelled a lot of games from RARE like for example Perfect Dark CORE, Kameo 2, Cascade, Sabreman Stampede, Urchin. Those are the only ones i can remember, but who knows how many other games Microsoft has cancelled because they wanted them to create Avatar clothes and crappy Kinect sport games.

RoboConker

Firejonie

I hope they just buy the backlog of games and some IP's. Don't know what Nintendo could do with Conker though, humor like that can't be replicated by another development team. I know they'll make good use of Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Battletoads ( maybe?) and ( maybe) Viva Pinata if they get a hold of them. I just hope this rumor is true, except they buy the IP's since Rare hasn't used their own IP's in years. Only making Kinect stuff.

Actually, if Ninty got Rare, that could mean Kameo 2 would come true! Still not interested though.

There's not much of a chance of Ninty buying Viva Pinata, not after this and Trouble in Paradise.

Too bad because the VP games are amazing.

And I keep hearing rare doesn't make games or has gone casuel.
ut the games created this gen have been

Perfect Dark Zero (2005)
Kameo: Power of the Elements (2005)
Viva Pinata (2006)
Diddiy Kong Racing 3D (2007)
Jetpac Refuelled(2007)
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise (2008)Viva Pinata:Pocket Paradise (2008)
Banjo and Kazooie nuts and bolts (2008)
Kinect Sports (2010)
Kinect sports: season 2(2011)

So in eight years they have done nine games (not including xbla ports) and only two are casuel and ot one could honestly be called bad. (Perfect Dark zero). Bye the logic that people use here wouldn't nintendo EAD be considered a casuel studio due tia lot of their output being wii branded games.

While there is an obvious from 08-10 in that year or so was when a lot of people from the Natal Team were being added to rare. In hindsight though I think Microsoft sees it was a mistake to screw with rare. Rare has been hiring recently and has gotten a few people from the Sega All star racing team. That and a lot of the the job descriptions for the different studios mention wanting people with directX 11 experience means they are gearing up for next gen. With four other studios that have a kinect or casuel focus it wouldn't make sense for Rare to contuine with kinect as there main development focus. Based on current hires and projects (AAA shooter and adventure game) hopefully they would be working on something for Durango's launch. Don't know if the games will be good but I'm hopeful.

I'm still surprised Microsoft never decided to leverage XBLA more with rare. Why not in addition to Nuts and Bolts release a Banjo threeie a d a new Jet force Gemani on xbla.

I could see them buying back some Rare IPs, but not the whole company. Rare is making too much money off Kinect. Also, a reminder to people that most of the best people at Rare left a while ago.

I can't see them buying out the studio. Microsoft needs them for Kinect development. I can see Nintendo trying to go for the Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pintata IPs, since they're quite Nintendo-like. Still, I don't know why Nintendo would want Rare's IPs so bad. I can't imagine all of them being bought, since there's quite a few. Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Conker and the two mentioned above. I don't see Nintendo wanting all of that.

I honestly can't see nintendo approaching microsoft or vice versa in regard to buying/selling rare's IP, just can't see that happening.

The only real reason I can see that if for VC games but than again would it pay off in the end? First off just because Nintendo gets say the IP for GoldenEye for the N64 that would be on hoops of many to jump through for a VC release. They would still have to deal with the company that actual owns the Bond license and the company that currently holds the video game licensing for Bond games. Battletoads and Killer Instinct would be a risk both those games haven't seen a release in years and bringing back a long dead IP is a big risk. Anyone remember Narc? As far as Banjo games go you can get them on Xbox.

Not happening because Activision holds the Goldeneye license now. Rare's holding expired even before Microsoft acquired them.

Yeah, I don't see Nintendo acquiring Rare's IPs because frankly they don't need them.

I don't think it will happen! Rareware is sooo profitable now with their "sports" nonsense, Microsoft won't let them go now!! Besides, all the good staff has gone!

Also: Retro deep in development of a Banjo Kazooie title! And Nintendo has yet to aquire the license?! Sounds strange to me!

And they need to buy Rareware to get the BK license?! They could just buy the license alone, I bet Rareware and Microsoft are eager to sell it! After all, they don't need it anymore! Rareware can just sit on their bum and release a Sports 3, and 4, and 5, and 6...

But back on Retro: It would be awesome if they would work on a new Banjo Kazooie, but it will never have that same flavor of the old Rareware days (with all the self-referential/English humor)!

And the rumor was brought by a Zelda site: That also makes it suspicious!
