Topic: Nintendo to review Miiverse posts

Posts 1 to 20 of 34

According to Go Nintendo in the round table discussion Nintendo will review comments in Nintendoland that are spoilers, also reviewing Miiverse posts for inappropriate content.
Also a built in system to prevent them.
The Quotes:
"Find and mark posts you consider to be spoiler. Nintendo will then review the content"
"System built in to avoid spoilers from the miiverse"
"Miiverse will be watched for inappropriate content."

Well they did say that WiiVerse was divided into same console, friend list and everyone. If this applies mostly to the everyone else bit and doesn't delay the others then I don't have a problem with the idea at all.

How much manpower will spoiler reviewing take? I'm not trying to pay extra for games to support a large mod staff; I'd honestly rather just not have this feature (or have it be limited to only my friends list). I'm not sure how easy it will be to auto filter out spoilers, but people also have the opportunity to handwrite/draw making it harder to filter content automatically.

I've heard tales of XBL chats - I'm sure people will find ways to get around whatever filters they have.

I... don't really want to know what it'll take to moderate this kind of thing successfully. ffs, these forums alone are crazy enough, but a system as big as Miiverse is poised to be... holy hell.

Trying to moderate posting within the Miiverse sounds a lot like the real-life moderation problems VMK, a child-friendly MMO that Disney used to run, had. I'd put money on a list of banned words and Nintendo hiring out some foreign firm to moderate for them. I'm also guessing Nintendo has been studying up on the tactics other companies that run Miiverse-type systems -cough Blizzard and Disney cough- use to prevent 4chan-like hell on their servers and copy off of them. If their willing to bring in EA to help them improve their online infrastructure, they've gotta know this could be a huge problem and be working to nip it in the bud...

Exactly.

1. Nobody said it was real-time for non-friend-list conversations

It would be tough. Swearing would be hard enough to moderate (people can easily substitute letters or insert spaces etc. to get around filters) but how do you automatically filter spoilers?

You might be able to catch a couple, but every game will have unique spoilers that will be impossible to automatically remove.

Personally, it would only take one major spoiler for me to permanently turn off the Miiverse. I hate it when important plot points are given away in games enough for it to bother me that much. As soon as I've read it, the damage is done - getting the post removed won't make me feel better.

And I applaud them for their effort (though it still won't stop pedophiles, racists, text penises, or psychotic death threats entirely).

Easiest way to reduce the number of spoilers is to only show messages from people who have progressed through the game as much as you have. Have some light moderation to reduce the amount of them, have a 'flag for review' system and there is no need to put all of the content from non-friends live instantly. Problem solved.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. Nice one!

It might not reduce the problem entirely (someone who got a kick out of it could read up on a game and spoil the ending before they get there themselves) but it would probably cut down on a lot of it.

I'm not sure how you think that delayed messages will help though. They still won't be read individually, or are you suggesting that the friends of some stranger would hopefully get their posts removed before they reach the broader community?

A bit of both. Give people on their friends list enough time to flag it while at the same time doing some basic processing. Checking all posts with a computer against a list of keywords that would be spoilers or profanity and maybe some very basic random-sample type moderation. If there are 5mill+ copies of a game and maybe 15mill+ messages I don't think you'd need to have all of the messages in circulation on the "public forums" for it to work ..... if that makes sense.

Yeah you're talking sense. I'd still be worried about a spoiler slipping through the cracks but I'm not going to be getting a Wii U in any case, so it doesn't really matter to me what happens.

I'm going to guess it'll quickly become a case of them only reviewing comments that get flagged. Anything else would be a terrible waste of resources.

Yeah. I think this can at least help things. You can't ever really completely solve some issues it seems, but whatever they can do to at least help the situation, never hurts.

They could filter names of important characters that dramatically affect the story.

The second option is to have some filters and if the message doesn't pass them then it could be sent to nintendo. Or both...?

This could go one of two ways... they could make it so it's quite easy to dip in a few spoilers, a few naughty words etc. or it could go the harsh route where their filter deems any word with even minor help or two words split apart (for example: "wa*sh it* with soap") as inappropriate and removed.

I've unfortunately seen both of these scenarios and one is easy to get around, one you might as well not even have a chat feature. We'll have to wait and see how Nintendo handles this. Dealing with a large forum is a nightmare as it is, how will they cope with an entire Miiverse of people cramming their servers with junk they need to check every second?

Easy. If they implement a filter that alerts them of language abuse, they can zone in on users being disruptive and abusive. That's if such a system exists or is planned for Miiverse.
