Now we all know the story of Skylanders, you put a toy on a pedestal and the toy turns into a character you can play as in game. Rumors are surfacing that nintendo wants to do that with smash bros. What are your thoughts?
It'd be cool if you got all the characters at once, but it'd take away the ability to have the same character fight him/herself. Me and my friend often played as one character, teamed up and fought another team (example: Me and him as Mario fight a team of Luigi). Anyway:
It isn't even a rumour, just some folks discussing the possibility. Regardless, I hope Nintendo doesn't do anything of the sort. NFC is nothing but a gimmick in my eyes. And we all know Nintendo doesn't care for gimmicks.
There's a difference between a reasonable function vs. useless function. Nintendo isn't going to force anyone to buy figures or objects to enhance their game to a needed extent.
They could very well add it to SSBU(4), but I can guarantee they aren't going to force you to buy DLC type content from figures.
I don't know where the idea that you're going to HAVE to buy figures to get the rest of your full game(contradiction, because then it wouldn't be a full game). Just like Ubisoft showed in their Rayman demo a while ago, the figures or whatever will be extras that are mostly used for replenishment of certain items that are already in the game.

they should to it with pokemon, I think the fanbase would love it.
With over 650 Pokemon and each figure being $10 that is $6,500 not counting the new ones from X and Y. Plus there would be no evolutions unless you paid for the next figure. So that is at least 6 Pokemon per party, and lets say only 4 of them evolve 3 times that is $140 for just a single line-up... plus what if Legendary Pokemon cost more. Yes it would make them a lot of money but also no one would ever pay for NFC games/figures ever again.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I think if they did something like this for Pokemon, it would most likely be trading card related. They aren't going to make a completely new product when they can just add the said AR/NFC features to current products they already sell. They could even pack a figure in with those tins or something, and let it give you a random item a day like mystery gift. Or add the scanned Pokemon card to your Pokedex or something in the video games. You already paid for the card, why not let those intertwined purchases benefit one another?

I really think that NFC is very possible with Smash Bros. but not in the idea that enhances gameplay, but more for the idea of collecting Nintendo cards, and putting them into battle, in some sort of different mode.
Similar to Sakurai's idea with idol cards in Kid Icarus Uprising. This will probably be the same thing using the Wii U's NFC, and the 3DS AR abilities.
I completely doubt that if this NFC idea is true, they will use toys for cost reason but would instead use Cards.
If anything, the figurine would just be an optional to unlock a character. I'm sure even if they did allow this, they would still allow you to unlock the characters traditionally: by completely specific challenges.
