I don't think it had anything to do with it being down over Xmas, here is why.

Nintendo's own job site reveals that the position was originally listed on December 11, 2013. Game Informer apologizes for the error.

Nintendo's servers have always been pretty good. The only difference is that Wii U and 3DS demand more from them than the DS and Wii did. I was playing DS games online in 2005 when they first launched that stuff.

They're probably upgrading the servers as they go so none of their resources are used unnecessarily. I think you guys are overestimating how many people are currently gaming online or accessing online features on Nintendo consoles. 3DS = probably 4-7 million per day. Wii U = 1-1.5 million. Those are just rough guestimates, but those numbers were probably far lower and less demanding years ago, even with WAAAAY more DS and Wii systems out there.
