Topic: Nintendo needs to release a revised, slightly smaller gamepad.

Firstly, let me start of with saying that the gamepad is a solid piece of kit, well made, and for the most part, it performs admirably (besides battery life). However, going into E3, I was expecting Nintendo to unveil an updated Gamepad, and was slightly disappointed with having to stick with the old clunker for the time being.

I really do prefer the Wii U pro controller, it's just a very nice, light, ergonomic controller, and I would personally argue that games like MK8, DKC: TF, and Super Mario 3D World just feel better overall, tighter is you wish, with the pro controller. That being said, the Wii U's OS, and many segments of its games are tied directly to the gamepad, making navigation cumbersome and in some cases, impairing gameplay experiences (skipping levels on Mario 3D World).

My main gripes is that after playing with the pro controller, or even the dual shock 4, the gamepad just feels bloated, almost annoying in some aspects (I'm looking at you L and R buttons). I know some people adore off-TV play, as I did for a time, so I think it would be ideal to continue supporting the original gamepad, with its 854x480 screen, for people who will utilize the large screen. However, something like a 800x240 screen size (like the original 3DS top screen), or even slightly smaller would also work nicely.......also, fix the L and R buttons, cutdown on the gamepads overall size, and if poss, improve on its weak battery life.

I would really adore Nintendo if they did this, I would have an all-encompassing Wii U gamepad that wouldn't feel unnatural while playing games like MK8.

What do you think? Will Nintendo release a new version of the gamepad? What changes would you like to see, if any?

Also, I don't think people would be so willing to criticize the gamepad concept if the controller itself was smaller in size, not looking so foreign to everything else on the market. In the long term it may boost the Wii U's image.

I agree it could use less weight, but I wouldn't say it's clunky. Seems pretty comfortable as is.

I would agree that it's comfortable for what it is, it's not a badly designed controller in consideration of the concept, but I think the overall experience would be improved with something smaller. It would be a day 1 purchase for me anyways.

I have medium sized hands, and no, it's good, but not perfect, play MK8 or Batman Arkham City with the gamepad and than the pro controller, you will be able to see the difference.

You're not going to shrink the gamepad by any amount that's worth the effort without shrinking the screen, which would negate any other gains that you may make with such a change.

I played Mario Kart 8 with a pro controller and a Wii U gamepad, and I preferred the gamepad, and i'll prefer the gamepad when I play lot's of games I guess, but that's only silly old me!

I don't see a difference....

I do, the Pro Controller doesn't have a good sized screen on it or a gyro sensor which means I am missing out on part of the experience. Also the GamePad's screen is big enough for the details of a console game while being small enough to fit into your hands. While there could be ways to improve the GamePad it is by no means a bad controller. Once the Wii U starts selling better then I think they can focus on a GamePad Lite but if the system isn't selling then I don't see a point. People want to be convince the GamePad can add to their experience and a GamePad Lite won't do that. Just my opinion

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I think the GamePad is fine. Anyone who has seen the inside of one would know they shouldn't/ can't make it any smaller, at least for the time being. The length of the GamePad, because of the touch screen, is the only real differing factor that would make it any different from a regular controller.

EDIT: They need to keep the form factor of a regular controller.

I also have large hands. Most controllers are too small for me, but the Wii U gamepad is just right. Perfect!

If a new Wii U gamepad was is created then I think it should be compatible with the 3DSXL.

The Wii U 3DS gamepad would look like a 3DS - with upper and lower screens. Maybe even bigger in size than the largest 3DSXL model.

The top screen would be stereoscopic and would allow 3D content to be streamed to it from the WiiU. This means the streaming function of the Wii U gamepad needs to be built into the new unit. Playing movies like Avatar 3D may be possible.

The Wii U is said to be capable of supporting two gamepads so stereoscopic content from the Wii U to one gamepad should already be possible.

The lower screen will act exactly like the touch screen of the Wii U gamepad.

I see no reason why the new WiiU 3DS gamepad could not have similar button and control stick layout as the WiiU gamepad does. it does not need to be pocketable, just convenient to carry around the house for connecting with the Wii U console.

And of course, it should still be able to play 3DS cards, and the digital content can be run from the WiiU console.

EDIT:

In order to further reduce likely costs, the 3DS is to be completely emulated on the Wii U console.

All content for Virtual 3DS will be streamed digitally from the Wii U console. There will be no 3DS cards used to keep hardware costs down.

What Nintendo could do for those with a Real 3DS and game (either physical or digital), is to occasionally poll this device over Wifi or the internal as a validation check and key, and then allow the digital version of the 3DS game to be downloaded to the Wii U console and played for free on the Wii U 3DS gamepad.

Also, the 3D streamable content needs only to be of such acceptable resolution - like with the 3DS to 3DSXL conversion - so as to reduce the overall expense of the gamepad hardware.

It certainly could work, and would represent a logical evolution of both the 3DS and Wii U. A virtual head mounted display would potentially be the next step onward.

If they revise it then I hope they use a better battery.

They don't have to do anything with it - it's perfect, and when someone says something like "it needs to be lighter"... I just facepalm. I mean, are you kids today doing nothing, only sit on your butt with thumb up it and play games?

It's perfect, and not only that, you have the option of playing with Pro, which is comfortable too. So why should they change anything?

With the screen the size that it is? Yeah, probably not. There's no reason why they couldn't cut it down to the size of the 3DSXL if they used a smaller screen though. Whether you'd actually want to have a GamePad that's that small though is another question entirely....

It is not perfect. Its pretty good when both sticks and the shoulder and trigger buttons are in use.

Using the face buttons or the dpad messes up the ergonomics of it. (Unless the buttons are remapped for the Virtual Console).

I think this is the direction the next generation will move in..... The next Wii U might be some sort of hub with multiple Gamepads/portable devices. A gamepad is alright to carry around the house, but not so much elsewhere, so maybe that's where portable devices fit in the scheme. It will play its own games but can interface with the console. I like the larger screen for surfing and netflix- even gameplay looks really sharp, in some cases better than my TV (even tho my TV is HD)
