It seems with Sony releasing many HD collections like God of War and Devil May Cry, that it might be a good idea for Nintendo to look to it's own back catalogue and do the same. Zelda would be the most obvious example, as an HD collection could include the remade Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask remade with resources from Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess (with at least 4 possible control styles), and Skyward Sword. This particular one could also include links to virtual console demos for games that aren't easily converted, like The Original, Zelda II, A Link to the Past, and Four Swords Adventures.

Of course, you could also do a Super Mario HD collection with 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and NSMB Wii. Or just release the Metroid Trilogy again with gamepad controls and an updated multiplayer mode. Pikmin 1 and 2 could also benefit.

What do you think? Awesome way to extend the appeal of the system between major releases or shameless cash in milking franchises to death?

Welcome @Neoproeus!
But it depends on the series and the games. Super Mario all-stars on the snes was the bees Knees!

Honestly, Nintendo probably has too many games in each of their long running series to make an HD collection. For example, if there were to be a Zelda HD collection, which games would they chose? There are so many, so it would be weird too see only a few of them be in the collection. Same goes for Mario and even Metroid(the only collection for Metroid would be a Prime collection, which was already on Wii).

In my opinion, they should just release solo HD versions of each game on the Wii U eShop. This way Nintendo could market all their games appropriately without having to leave out any.

Wow! 4 replies already? You guys must be pretty closely knit to notice I'm new...

Anyway, the reason I say only 5 of the Zelda games would be suitable for HD remakes is because only 5 of them were rendered with polygons. In order to do any of the older Zelda games, they would have to redraw all of the sprites and overhaul it, while for Twilight Princess or Wind Waker all they would have to do is tweak the graphics in a few key sections and change a bit of the code to indicate the overall screen resolution. I've seen youtube videos of Wind Waker in particular, which gave me the idea, and they are BEAUTIFUL! I didn't like the Wind Waker art style when it came out but now 'm just thinking it was a couple generations before it's time.

Welcome to NL. We hope you will stay for a while.
As for the Remakes and collections, the World is filled with collections and remakes alredy. Sometimes its remakes of games released only 5 years ago.
With that said, I believe that if a studio were to make an HD Remake or a collection. It should be both, a worthy buy for newcomers and a warm hug for fans.
Take the Kirby's 20th anniversary collection for example. Not only is it a collection of 6 games that define the Kirby series, but also tells about the Spinoff games, the TV show, and gives music and original art in the package.
A great example for a remake would be Ocarina of Time 3D. It used today's technology to its advantage and gave everything a fresh coat of paint from a title originally released 15 years ago. It gave a new hint system for begginers who are stuck, or just have a rough memory and forgot how to kill King Dodongo. And it included the Master Quest which was literally a new Zelda adventure.
There are bad examples of collections/remakes of games as well. Like the Splinter Cell Collection. And The Final Fantasy Collection, which is way overpriced.

I believe there is a very fine line between good, and otherwise successful remakes, and those that never should have been bothered with. Like what @Klyo said, OoT 3D and Kirby's 20th anniversary are great examples of older games brought back to the currant consoles of today.

But more often then not, remakes end up being unnecessary and basically are cash cows for those feeding off of nostalgia.

A collection of the old-school Metroid games would be great. Metroid 1 / Zero Mission, Metroid 2, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. All with high resolution sprites, or maybe even rendered in 3D. They could make it look damn good on the Wii U if they used 3D graphics. They could use the same engine for all the games, making it less work.
Of course that's me just dreaming. I doubt Nintendo would put that much work into a Metroid (sans Prime) collection. If they did release a collection it would probably just be straight ports. And Metroid 2 wouldn't even have the Super GameBoy mode.

Seems like a decent idea, but honestly, I'd rather play Zelda in all of its original, 8-bit glory.

Do I even play?
What's a "gamer" anyway? POKÉMON!

From looking at the 6 games they chose to redo in 3D for the 3DS, I'm sure Nintendo would pick nothing but the absolute best games for an HD collection

/eyeroll.

That sounds like an awesome idea, but Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Fusion don't really need a whole lot of updating. They're great games as is, and not really all that out of date if compared to indie titles. Maybe a new soundtrack in Super Metroid but that's really it...

If Nintendo were to remake a 2D metroid game it'd have to be Metroid 2. You have no idea how much it's bugged me since finding out Metroids evolved but they haven't since that game for some reason. The details of that game are so pivotal to the rest of the series and yet hardly anyone has or wants to play it. The series is called METROID for crying out loud. Remind people that it's about METROIDS.

I think Nintendo wants to separate itself from the Rare Donkey Kong Country games since rumors spread that they were actually warped political cartoons about the real life banana wars. Why do you think King K Rool was absent from Returns? Banana Wars...

I've never actually played those games and I don't think they sold all that well. Maybe Nintendo attributed their poor performance with the Banana Wars thing and decided after them to remove themselves far away from King K Rool. Or Maybe it was just Retro thinking King K Rool was Rare's thing...
