@R_Champ Colorful lighthearted platformer =/= copying Nintendo. And for the record, I think PS2 Sly crushed GameCube Mario. There was nothing second fiddle about the Sly games. Heck, Nintendo hasn't done anything like them outside of the colorful platformer part. (And all of the games I've played on that list aren't like any Nintendo I know of.)
LittleBig Planet was more a creation tool with a crappy physics platformer atttatched to it. I don't think Nintendo did anything like that until long after LBP became a thing...Modnation/Little Big Karting were definitely rip-offs, but more rip-offs of Trackmania with Kart racing elements added in to hide the stink of sleeze.
But otherwise I agree with Jaz, the rest of those games aren't anything like Nintendo games you're saying they're trying to compete with. Last I checked, a different take on the same genre (and often varied ones at that) do not a rip-off make.
It's not exactly fair for other companies, since Nintendo has been around for so much longer and still somehow maintains a level of quality that is quite high. Not one company can really say that about themselves except Nintendo.
In recent years, Nintendo is still pretty darn high, although I'm quite fond of Sony as a publisher, since their willing to put some of their money towards some excellent indie games. As a developer? Yeah, Nintendo wins hands down. They may be same-y but their still darn impressive.
Also, I've been impressed with Ubisoft recently. Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed 4, Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends were all exceptionally good, and the likes of Child of Light and Valiant Hearts are something I hope we see more of.
@Caniswolfred. I didn't make it clear (at all) because I didn't list which of those games I've played, but I agre that LBP Kart/Modnation (at least it had the track
editor though) was a copy of Mario Kart.
To answer this thread, personally I think Nintendo is the best developer/publisher in all of gaming industry. If you say otherwise, you're just biased.
I would say Sony and Blizzard is closely tied in second place. The only games made by Sony that I would considered "Nintendo level" is Gran Turismo 6 and the Last of Us. The rest are pretty meh. However Sony is picking up some serious slack in game developing. If Nintendo does not diverse out and make different game genres (Shooters, Racing Sim etc), Sony will catch up sooner than we would think.
Could you imagine Nintendo making a military shooter? That would be so sick and I can finally kiss COD goodbye.

Blizzard got knocked down a ways after the Activision merger for me.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DefHalan Nah it's the same old blizzard to me. I actively play Starcraft 2 and I have to say, that game is a master piece and the only RTS worth playing today. I'm still waiting for the 3rd expansion pack T_T

I don't count Blizzard anymore because I've boycotted their games since they've become an active promoter and implementer of persistent online authentication...even moreso than EA.
If we are talking strictly developer, Nintendo wins the time + quality race, if your looking at the present and no so long ago past, yeah, guys like Blizzard, Bungie, Rockstar, Ubisoft Montreal, Atlus, Bethesda, Naughty Dog, etc., all need to be considered as well.

They are good no doubt, but it's hard to say "Rockstar/Naughty Dog/Bungie (etc) are the best developer today" when those studios put out 1-2 big games every 4 years, while Nintendo cranks out a minimum of 3-5 highly rated "must have" games annually.
It really isn't even close at all, regardless of your personal gaming tastes.

In consideration of quantity, your right, but from a quality aspect, most of those studios equal whatever Kyoto's largest product is.

If that's the case than shouldn't we break up nintendo's output by each separate developer.
WAT!

No, because the question was "Is Nintendo the greatest developer/publisher today?", which encompasses everything they make themselves or fund/assist other studios to produce.

So shouldn't the same be qualified to other publishers.

it comes down to the difficulty of separating developer and publisher. In my opinion if the developer is owned by a publisher they count under that publisher.
