Wii U Sales Absolutely Destroy PS4 In Japan

This was expected, with what may be Nintendo's biggest game of the generation dropping.

Wii U outsold PS4 in Japan the week before Mario kart 8 as well. Also, historicaly it sold better in it's launch window in Japan than PS4 has even when it had no games. PS4 is bombing hard in Japan so far.

"What’s shocking is that the PS4 is trending downward among other consoles and handhelds all-time in Japan. After 15 weeks on the market in Japan, the PS4 has sold only 60k units more than the Sega Dreamcast. It is trailing the PS Vita at the same point in its life by 30k units, the PS3 by nearly 100k units, the GameCube by over 200k units, and finally the Wii U had sold 250k more units by the time it hit its 15th week on the market."

@blaisedinsd The PS4 was built and marketed for western gamers though. It's basically a streamlined last-gen PC in terms of architecture and content. Most of the Japanese developers aren't even bothering with it right now, except for companies like Square-Enix and Capcom, whose favorite thing is spending tens of millions of dollars on games that nobody buys.

As the article you linked said, Japanese gamers really couldn't care less that the PS4 is "cooler" than the Xbox One. They care that the games they like are still being released on PS3 and Vita.

Microsoft ruined their own May sales by announcing so far in advance that the Kinectless option was being released in June.

Even with the delays, I don't see how the Wii U's line up competes with the other consoles. There's no way X is getting a Western release this year, which leaves Smash, a big game for sure, but Smash is a game for the hardcore Nintendo fan, and the hardcore Nintendo fan probably already has a Wii U, and Bayonetta 2, a sequel to a game that while critically acclaimed, was not a big sales success, and the chance of it being a system seller is low.

PS4/Xbone still have Destiny and Assasins Creed: Unity as the marquee AAA releases, on top of stuff that could turn out nicely like Alien: Isolation, Shadows of Mordor, Dragon Age III, and the all important sports games. Oh, and FIFA is definitely a big hitter. It's usually the best selling game of the year in Europe and for the last two years has also been in the top 10 in North America. PS4 will also have Driveclub, coming from a studio that usually puts out very good racing games, and Xbone will have Forza Horizon 2, The Halo 1-4 Collection and Sunset Overdrive which is looking really nice.

If Nintendo are going to 'turn it around', I think they have to announce something big at E3, because as great as Smash and Bayonetta will probably be to play, the won't sell more systems than everything mentioned above.

@Peach64 Going by what happened last week with Watch_Dogs though, I'm guessing that most of the other multiplat sales will go to the PS4 as well. The only one that I can see potentially doing better on Xbox is Destiny, and that's still up in the air. Forza and Halo aren't going to attract new gamers to Xbox any more than Smash is going to attract new people to Wii U. Halo and Smash have fairly comparable historical sales, and both are quite a bit more popular than Forza.

Wii u has more exlusives than PS4/XONE has games that won't be appearing on PS3/X360 this year, right?

Smash Bros. is going to sell as good as Mario Kart and move a lot of consoles, but I hope Nintendo has a plan for a third hit after Mario Kart and Smash Bros. to keep the momentum.

Why not, they have most likely been working on it since 2010?

Hopefully localization teams have been working on it with them or are getting the game soon.

What's interesting is the global sales for the week ending May 31 though.

PS4: 201, 630
Wii U: 187,028
3DS: 78,397
Xbox One: 52, 180
PS3: 39,869
PS Vita: 27, 487
Xbox 360: 26,078
PSP: 11, 003
Wii: 7,681

I guess no one was willing to buy a Xbox One to play Watch_Dogs? That's quite a huge gap between PS4 and XBO considering that the same game dropped for both systems. PS4 got nearly 4x the sales! Professional analysis: XBO = cancer.

The XBO may be waiting until towards the end of next year to see a boost in sales.

Wow.... The PSP is still putting up decent sales in 2014! I know Sony still produces the system, but very few stores have new systems and even fewer have new games to buy. Who is buying new PSP consoles?

And wow, that is a horrible gap for the Xbox One. People must still be bitter over all the crap Microsoft tried to pull before the system launched. Its had a trickle down effect since even Xbox 360 sales have plummeted. The Vita is outselling the 360! And we know the problems the Vita is having outside Japan!

To be honest, I'm not shocked Microsoft is doing poorly. I still own my 360, but its been a long time since I've played anything on it, and my gaming habits have pretty much shifted to the PS3 and 3DS. When I do get a new system, the Wii U and PS4 will be my choices with the Xbox One being a distant third.

For me, Microsoft turned me off with their behaviour and actions over the past year. Not to mention, their first-party lineup in recent years seems to be nothing besides Halo, Forza, Gears of War, and Kinect Sports.

I'm not shocked Microsoft is having such poor sales, and in a way, they kinda deserve them. Anyone who planned to immplement what they intended for the Xbox One loses my trust. Yeah, they backed away because of some bad publicity and Sony mocking them, but if they ever truly became successful or the clear market leader, what's to stop them from trying those plans again?

For my part, my money goes to Sony and Nintendo. They may not be prefect companies, but I think they are run by people that truly care about video games. Microsoft strikes me as a company that views the Xbox as no different from Windows, Office, or Internet Explorer. Another product that they can make money off of.

All three are obviously trying to make money, but I think Sony and Nintendo also want to give the best gaming value for your buck. Something about Microsoft just makes me uneasy about them. It's like they want to bleed money out of a consumer and offer nothing in return.

I bought a brand new PSP, my first one, about a year ago......

I think my local target store carries more PSP stuff than Vita these days. Vita doesn't even get shelf space anymore.

Mine only has a couple of PSP-3000s. They have not carried new PSP games in a couple of years. The PSP section was given to the Vita until a few months ago, when the space was given to the PS3 and PS4. Now, the Vita is in a very small section.

And I'm not bashing people who are buying PSPs, its still a great system that has tons of games. I bought a new model at Gamestop last Fall after my previous PSP that I got used stopped working.

I'm just kinda surprised, given the PSP has not had a major game release in a few years, and has been carried at fewer and fewer stores. What really got me was that it outsold the Wii, which still has pretty good shelf space at many stores.

I'm kinda happy the PSP is showing a little bit of life. Maybe people are taking chances on it now that the price has dropped at many stores. Overall its a really good handheld, and in some ways, better than the Vita and even the 3DS to some degree.

@Peach64
It depends. Some people still want Kinect with their system. I would have bought the Kinect bundle anyway, because Kinect is still a pretty big part of why some people might potentially buy an Xbox One. That's what I think, anyway.

Also, we don't know whether X will come this year, or not. They could announce that it will be out in fall at E3, for all we know.

@Caryslan
The PSP is selling, because it's portable. It has more games than PS Vita, and alot of games on PS Vita are available somewhere else. I bet if more games used Near in a cool way, which in turn would mean more games, we'd be seeing higher numbers, but Sony isn't putting out as much as Nintendo, and people see this.

If these Natsume games are good and sell well, the 3DS will probably get a boost in Japan.

One thing that kinda helps the PSP right now, is that many of the games are pretty cheap used at Gamestop. Which means its pretty easy to build up a nice library of games without breaking the bank. Its a pretty good value, even if you buy the system new.

Right now, the PSP is a far better value than the Vita. In fact, I would suggest someone buy a PSP or 3DS and wait on the Vita. The main problem I see with the Vita is that its pretty much a port machine. Which granted, the PSP had its share of ports, but its hit ridiculous levels with the Vita. The two most recent titles that are being hyped is a God of War Collection and Borderlands 2. Both are fine games, but they are titles that have already been on other systems. God of War Collection is a port of the PS3 collection of HD versions of two PS2 games, while Borderlands 2 has already been on the PS3 and Xbox 360 for years.

A large portion of the games I see in stores for the Vita are ports, and several original Vita games like Assassin's Creed Liberation are being ported to the PS3 and Xbox 360, making it even more pointless to own a Vita.

The Vita is a great system in terms of hardware and potential, but its bogged down by having so few games that show that off.. To put it in perspective, at this point in the PSP's lifespan, it was already getting its own exclusive God of War game with Chains of Olympus. With the Vita, its simply getting a port of games that people have played either on a PS2 or a PS3. To add to that, Chains of Olympus was considered a standout title that showed off what the PSP could do. God of War Collection seems to be having trouble running smoothly from what I've heard.

To a consumer, a Vita offers a "Been here, done that" feel to its library. Yes, standouts exist in terms of original content, but the number of ports is simply insane for the Vita.

And in a market where Nintendo is bringing their A game to the 3DS, Tablets are a major factor, and even the PSP is showing some life it really impacts the view that people have of the Vita.

My brother owns a Vita, and I see potential in the hardware. It just does not have enough original games to show off that potential.
