Topic: Nintendo Direct in December?

I wouldn't be surprised if another one was just around the corner. I'm not sure what info they would talk about besides 2015 release schedules and holiday 2014. Maybe new info on E3 games? Or Nintendo EAD's mystery projects?

There honestly isn't that much to show off outside of DLC for this year's games and amiibo functionality in Captain Toad, Kirby, and Yoshi. They could also show off some eShop surprises, but outside of showing Yoshi's Woolly World and more Kirby and Splatoon that's all I could see happening.

A few months back I was sure there would be 1 in early Dec for the early 2015 stuff - Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Maker, Splatoon - but they already showed Kirby (w/ a date, don't know how that happened) and Splatoon so I don't think Dec is getting an ND. Nintendo is coasting on what they have this holiday, SM3DW bundle, MK8, SSBU and amiibo. Jan should get 1 for all the DLC and the rest of SSBU that they left out, tournaments, Miiverse stage and sharing and a date for Mewtwo. And mor eabut Yoshi and Mario Maker. How Kirby got mutliplayer and dated before Yoshi I'll never know.

As for those wanting 3DS game news, that will happen in late Jan or early Feb, they can't promote games for that system right before the west gets the new 3DS consoles. I don't know anything, not even rumours, but I would suspect the "new 3DS" come out in mid/late March w/ MH4U so they can count sales for this fiscal year which ends March 31. And they better rename it 3DSn or 3DSN. They have done such a lousy job for 2 years trying to convince people Wii U isn't just a Gamepad for the Wii, how many sales of the new 3DS do you think they'll get when all the major retailers have been listing every new current 3DS bundle as "new". Sure I'll buy 1, and some of you, but they way NOA advertises it really needs a new name, and not just "new".

And for those who think it can't get a new name b/c it is already "new 3DS" in Japan, Sony released the Vita TV in Japan dn PS TV in the US, and it 'sth esam eexact thing. Ntot too mention Famicom becoming NES.

They need to do a 3DS Direct desperately. 2015 looks barren aside from S.T.E.A.M and MM.

Isn't this always the case at the end of the year for every platform? There's a limited amount of attention a company can grab and the hype for a release needs to be managed. I mean think back to the sort of thing Nintendo has done in the past, at this point in "the cycle" we didn't know about Wind Waker HD, 3D World, Pokemon OR/AS, Hyrule Warriors and others. I don't think last year even Smash was confirmed for a 2014 release. There's even more reason for secrecy when there's a New 3DS on the horizon which will likely get its own exclusives. They wouldn't want to plaster all over the internet more information about games like Xenoblade when the console you'll need to play it isn't out yet in most of the world.

@skywake This does bring up the point of will Nintendo completely abandon 3DS game support once the New 3DS is out? The current lineup would suggest yes with a New 3DS release date of June 2015. Of course Nintendo made some really huge errors with the 3DS and they won't want to repeat those, the biggest one I'm particularly thinking of is Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 being released on DS.

Why would they? It's basically the same as the transition from DS to DSi: Mostly the same hardware bar some slight changes leading to some games only running on the newer hardware, but most running on both.

Half and half I reckon. It looks more like a half-step console like the DSi and GBC were but maybe a bit closer to what the GBC was. I think there will be a few exclusives for it because we already know that there will be one. I don't think they'll do something as big as Pokemon though because that's just reckless. My bet would be on a Wii/GC port... #cough#cough#

By that logic Crystal should've been a GBA exclusive. Gamefreak said they didn't want to cause problems in the transferring Pokémon back and forth.

To be fair, Vita as a brand is worthless in America. Sony couldn't sell it as the Vita TV, or it would be completely dead on arrival. Naming it the Playstation TV was the only way they were going to get any interest out of it in the west. Pretty sure it failed anyway, but distancing itself from from the Vita brand was a good call.

3DS is marketable in the west though. New 3DS is still a dumb name, but it has brand power. Also, it's already out in Australia and it's called the New 3DS there too. I guess there could be a Genesis/Mega Drive situation though. Which was also dumb.

Not sure what you mean by "officially announce", the NOA website has all 3 waves listed w/ Nintendo dates, Dec and Feb:

http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/line-up/

If you are expecting an actual date #, well it' N intnedo, so 2 days after they are on shelves Which might not be a bad thing, let people find them rather than give the eBay resellers a head start.

Crystal doesn't follow as it came out before the GBA was released in Japan and the US, Black 2/White 2 was out several months after the 3DS launch everywhere.

@rjejr Yeah, the consensus is December 14 as the release date, but of course the website vaguely lists "December."

Actually you're right, for some reason I remember it being only a few months after launch. It was actually over a year in most regions. I must've been thinking about the first ones not the sequels.

That said the second generation of Pokemon games (excluding Crystal) were built to work on the original Gameboy well after the GBC's release and Emerald released after the DS was out. So there's a history of Pokemon lagging slightly behind. It makes sense, Black/White 2 just lagged well behind. I think given the history it's a safe bet to say that next years Pokemon won't be a New 3DS exclusive.

From what we've sen so far, I wouldn't expect a lot of "new 3DS" only type games, but I do expect there to be things - like Miiverse during SSB for 3DS - to only work on the new 3DS. And amiibo unless you get a portal for the old 3DS. The way the Pokemon games release I wouldn't be surprised if even after a new handheld ships - 4DS, DSU, whatever - the next next Pokemon games don't still run on 3DS. Nintendo seems to be very good w/ BC in their handhaleds.

Given the New Nintendo 3DS is basically a Game Boy Color or DSi... I'd say it's 50/50 whether Pokemon whatever the hell the third gen 6 game is called is a New Nintendo 3DS exclusive.

Could be a good way to force die hard Pokemon fans to buy a New Nintendo 3DS...

I think, like past pokemon games, it will be compatible with the current 3DS but have exclusive features that the New3DS can use.

Apparently, Nintendo Minute is going to increase their schedule during December considerably (compared to the regular one-per-week show). I wonder what they will show, other than their GOTY showdown (which seems to be their retrospective of the games during the year)? Nintendo Minute has a "tradition" of playing games that are about to arrive or has just arrived. For example, they showed the Nintendo Minute with the MK8 DLC just after the November Nintendo Direct had aired. They have also already covered both Smash U and Captain Toad on Nintendo Minute.
