Could be that we're in the middle of a paradigm shift and no one will realise it until it's happened via the death of consoles...

I don't know why most people take this as Nintendo putting games on smart phones. I took as they were going to use it as a source to advertise and make their games more known. To be honest I have an idea of what they could do with smart phones, but I have no good way how to explain it in text haha. I don't think we'll be seeing a official Mario game on iOS that isn't emulated.

Well if you're going to put it like that haha. Okay I'll do my best to explain it. AHEM!

So what I thought they should do was make it so that they have a mini-game like option on the smart phone that could possibly be used to earn points for money or experiece. Like say in an RPG, you play a game on a smart phone and playing that game earns you some gold or experience points, the game will say, thank you for playing if you want to redeem these points please link it with you're Wii U copy of insert name that way you could use it to level up faster or buy things easier.

I honestly thought it would be a cool way to advertise the game and make people want to play it, but I honestly had a brain crash and couldn't think of how to put it into easily understandable words.

Edit: Also how in the world do you post gifs, I've been trying to do it forever but can't! Does it need to be a certain size or do I have to use some sort of wording....or do I just the JPEG method?

you mean something kinda like the Pokéwalker? that could work
they could also use it to test a single mechanic or feature in a simple minigame so they can use it well in future games.
to post gifs it's the same as any image (img)link here(/img) use [ ] instead of ( )

Haha thanks, its been bothering me for awhile now. As for the Pokewalker thing, it could be similar to that in regards, except instead of walking it would be playing a mini game that revolves around the game or something that shows off the game and characters in a fun and interesting way. Of course it would depend on what game they were trying to advertise. It could be a great way to try to advertise the Wii U. It'd be nice if when you type Nintendo onto your smart phone if an ACTUAL Nintendo app would come up first.

We are in the middle of a definite change in the market with multiple new products ready to work their way into the world and make their mark, I highly doubt the Big 3 will be how it will continue in the future in fact we are looking at a far more fractured market with lots more competition.

It could also be both and I tend to believe that it is both. We are in the middle of a "paradigm shift" and neither Google nor Apple are going to be leading it. Neither of those guys are really in the gaming business when you think about it. Google is all about ads and collecting your data to make better ads. They made a phone so they could be in your pocket and get more of your data to serve better ads. Apple is in the media distribution business, they want to sell more movies and music. So they got into your pocket so they could have another device to sell to. That's why their "gaming devices" have sucked, that has always been secondary to both of them.

There is a bit of a change going on but customers are only going to buy high end GPUs from companies they trust with games. Those companies will be the ones who are already into either selling GPUs or selling games. We've already seen Valve make their play, we might see NVidia and AMD do their thing. Microsoft is always trying to be across everything so they're always making their play.

The outcome I see in the next generation or two is that selling hardware becomes an old idea. That instead people buy Nintendo OS, Playstation OS, XBox OS, Steam OS, UPlay OS or Origin OS and throw it onto a PC. I mean that's really only one step from what the XBOne and PS4 are already, they're just that but locked down. Then those guys sell their favored controllers used to navigate their OS and the "next gen" starts whenever you as the consumer want it to. Want a portable? Install the OS on a portable device. Don't want a fuss? Buy their pre-built machine.

@skywake I think its definitely possible for this route to happen, but I don't believe it will happen for a long time, the idea of playing on a PC to some people is still unappealing as well as having to buy games digitally. Someday when internet is more wide spread and the consumer has changed I believe it will happen, but not next generation or the generation after that. But what do I know, I'm not psychic.

Yeah that's what I initially thought as well - the so-called "companion apps" would be released as promo stuff and things that would help you in the game. eShop is very likely as well, once account system is improved. I wouldn't be surprised to see some small games released (really simple puzzles or touchscreen minigames) that would earn you extra points/stuff in your WiiU/3DS releases.
If it's possible, Nintendo would most likely also implement streetpass and spotpass in your smartphone - that way you wouldn't have to carry your 3DS around all the time on standby.
For me, a new business strategy should mean more flexible game prices and more frequent price drops. Right now I have to import my games to Europe for my NTSC 3DS and I have to drop 45$ and more for a new Nintendo game no matter how old it is. I got Ace Combat for 15, MGS3 for 20 and some other good offers, but Nintendo published software is just killing me.

So basically, you want a sidekick app/game for Wii U software on 3DS? Kind of like the VMU on Dreamcast?

If they brought chaos from Sonic Adventure back, you'd have access to a chao app on 3DS, so that you can bring it with you when you're away from Wii U. You can do activities on the go, then load it back to Wii U.

There's some games that do that, but Nintendo hasn't really implemented them, themselves.

That's an interesting idea, though they'll have to do a lot of work to stop piracy, but proprietary file systems would be a good step. They'd have to publish a minimum spec of some kind, but they'd clearly also continue to sell a console or at least do deals with hardware companies to sell boxes with a "Made for nOS" or whatever label on it.

On the one hand Nintendo is very much a hardware company; on the other hand their last two products have been sold at a loss to get any traction and Nintendo appears to be forward-thinking to the degree that they might well be crafting an exit strategy or at least making contingency plans so that any such transition is an evolution of the company rather than a life-saving move.

Iwata: “The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles”
http://nintendoeverything.com/iwata-the-spread-of-smart-devic...

  • Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reaffirmed the hardware manufacturer’s commitment to consoles, and indicated that we won’t be seeing Mario on smartphones anytime soon.
  • “The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple. It doesn't mean that we should put Mario on smartphones.”
  • Iwata added that Nintendo must determine how to best use smartphones so that consumers become aware of its games.

This is by far the most interesting statement to come out from all the financial talks. I've also said that the current business model is no longer sustainable but I can't think of an alternative. For every factor to take into consideration there is another one that contradicts it.

For instance Nintendo is pointing at the ultra casual platforms for clues but at the same time have been expanding a decidedly "core" studio such as Monolith Soft. I just can't compute.

Whatever happens in the future I just hope that Nintendo retains their talent and keep producing top tier games. It's pretty crazy to think that GameTrailers considered 5 Nintendo 1st party games to belong in the top 10 games of 2013. I don't care where and how I'll be playing their future games, just don't implode in quality or westernize your franchises like the other Japanese publishers.

So juggle 3 platforms when they can barely handle the current 2 at the moment?

Was more of an idea for their next mobile device.

It's called having variety. That's what any sane major game publisher like this should be doing.
