I sorta have mixed feelings. I love collecting physical objects, and so I've loved Disney Infinity but... My wallet hates it. I foresee the same situation here. Either way... I hope the prices are at least not too damaging, and that the figurines get a lot of use.
Feel free to add me on the Nintendo Network: ShadJV
Here's my 3DS FC, always looking for Pokemon X Friend Safaris: 2191-7643-5167
Peace!
I've noticed every person who disagrees has curiously refrained from rebutting my position and has instead contrived examples of misuses by Nintendo that i specifically mentioned. If you read the report you'll see Iwata goes to certain lengths to articulate that this NFP is very different than Skylanders/Infinity. It's a new platform not a collection of figures or an accessory to the game, it opens up new possibilities and the interaction between different games and characters is certainly how it looks like it's going to be used not as an accessory necessary for gameplay of a particular title(s). I really think the personalized move sets and stats being married to particular characters is a practical and fun way of allowing individuals to get the most out of that characters value. I really hope i can bump this after E3. haha.

personalized move sets would be game breaking. Bump all you want.

It's already been announced. I've said this multiple times, here's irrefutable video evidence since my assertions apparently weren't enough for you to consider the possibility.

Haha, no not at all? I'm sure a player could have a profile on the game with all this info but if you could also just have the gamepad read the NFP it would be very easy to bring say your favorite characters over to a friends house and have the gamepad read them in order to have your profile and moveset imported. With the depiction of the characters in Smash having always been toy figures when not fighting it would be like you can play with your own actual Mario/Samus/Fox ect.. You've always been able to have a profile but now it's more than that. Also with all the fan service in Smash to other games it would make perfect sense if trophies and the like could be unlocked through the use of NFP's as those are non-essential to gameplay and entirely a fan service. Remember Nintendo is branding this more like a console than an accessory as it's going to be a new way to interact with and use software exclusive to their full platforms not as just simply a toy. And although i wouldn't doubt a Nintendo style Skylanders game it's clear from the notes of Iwata's presentation that this PLATFORM is not going to be limited to a single game or use the way Skylanders is. The key emphasis is the ability for these NFP's to read and write information, not just simply be something that's scanned to access data in the game.

. Do you realy think hundreds of thousands of people will buy these just to take them to their friends houses? Heck I only know about six people with wiiu's in real life and they are spread across diffrent states. I mostly play games on line or with my partner.

No as i said in the op i think most people, the casuals, will buy them because they are awesome as a toy. Who doesn't want figures of their favorite Nintendo characters? They are attractive just being toys. If Skylanders sell like hotcakes why wouldn't a better version backed by the gold standard of Nintendo's IP's? I think it's going to be pretty cool to have quality figures of my favorite characters. The fact that you can store read and write data means they can have fairly distinct usages in many different games. This is being launched as a platform that's going to interact with Nintendo's major IP's, that's a fact given what was said. Of course i'm speculating but i think given the info it makes perfect sense to me, i'm sure i could be wrong. Remember if someone has done it before it is very unlikely Nintendo will do the same, they're like this to the point that it can be annoying at times (online).
That would be neat. Remember how they said that they would reveal connectivity between the two versions later? I think the figures and E3 have something to do with the connectivity!

Bingo. I think this is how they go about it too as it's one of the exact stated purposes of the platform.
