Then you wouldn't need any sort of streaming involved, since it wouldn't make any sense to show you what's on the Gamepad or the tv screen if you'll only use it as a second controller.

Yes, the NeoGAF thread on Wii U system updates also remarked on the peculiar date of this maintenance. Normally, the big maintenance updates like this appears on a Monday.

Realistically, I think this is just the typical Nintendo underestimates demand for a console and ends up surprised when their servers go down due to overload. Of course this time it's likely due to system transfers to New 3DS (XL) so will probably replicate what happened in Christmas 2013.
