Topic: New Wii U owner, questions

I just bought a Wii U for $130 (it has a return policy btw). Have a few questions about it:

1. What are the best Wii U exclusives to get? Only looking for Wii U titles, since I have a Wii/GC and all of those good games.
2. I plan on buying a lot of digital games. Can I install and play them from a hard drive, or do I need to buy an SD card for more storage after 32GB?
3. Does the Switch do everything the Wii U can, and can I just port my Wii U purchases over when I get a Switch?

Any answers are appreciated.

@CloudvsRoy Hey, congrats on buying a Wii U!

I'll answer your questions by number to the best of my knowledge:

1. There are plenty of great Wii U exclusives, but I'll list the ones I highly recommend based on my opinion:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Splatoon
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Bayonetta 1 (if you have not already played it on an Xbox 360)
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Pikmin 3
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • Rayman Legends (if you have not already played it on Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, or Xbox One)
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (NOTE: it's a remaster of a GameCube game so it's not an original Wii U title, but it's a huge improvement from the original GameCube release so I'd give it a shot)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (NOTE: it's a remaster of the GameCube version so it's not an original Wii U title, but it's a huge improvement from the original GameCube release so I'd give it a shot).

All of the above are gems that you more or less should definitely play (though as with all games play demos or check YouTube videos of gameplay to get an idea before buying it). There are also plenty of other great games too, like Nintendoland (which I've heard is amazing in local multiplayer), The Wonderful 101, Hyrule Warriors, Pokken Tournament, New Super Mario Bros U/New Super Luigi U, Shovel Knight, and more. Let me know or ask others if you want further suggestions!

2. You can install and play them from a hard drive. You should research to make sure the best kind of hard drive to use, I think Nintendo recommends one that plugs into an outlet for power but I'm not entirely sure. I actually don't think you can use an SD Card with installing Wii U games (you can only use it for installing smaller Wii games IIRC).

3. The Switch does not do everything the Wii U can. Here's what the Wii U can do that the Switch cannot to the best of my knowledge:

  • Dual screen gameplay (such as having a map always on hand on the GamePad screen while you play the game on the TV, etc.)
  • Virtual Console — the Wii U can play all Wii games, and also has an extensive catalogue of NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy Advance, DS, and other older systems' games. The Switch cannot play any older systems' games, with the exception of some ported Wii U games and NES games that will be made available to those who purchase the online subscription in September. Speaking of which ...
  • Free online gaming — the Wii U has free online gaming. Starting from this September, you need to pay $20 a year to play online on the Switch.
  • Support for Wii remotes — as you mentioned, you have a Wii. You may also have a bunch of Wii remotes; these can serve as controllers for various multiplayer Wii U games.

EDIT: I forgot to answer the second part. You can NOT transfer Wii U purchases to the Switch, even with games that released on both systems.

So hope all of this helped! I may have forgotten some stuff that I hope others will be able to fill in, but I think I remembered most of it. Have fun playing games on the Wii U!

What he said. With the correction that Twilight Princess HD is only a very minor improvement over the original.

Also, if you haven't played it on Wii, Xenoblade Chronicles from the Wii U eshop is the perfect way of playing that game, because it's best with standard gamepad controls and it fits the gamepad screen perfectly, not looking too blurry like it does on a big screen.

@CloudvsRoy Bear in mind that you can modify (softmod) the Wii U to enable disc ripping - i.e. you can now install your disc games to any internal/external storage. The ripping process isn't fast by any means (positively slow in my experience) and it ties up your Wii U while it's happening, but it's great to be able to to do if you want it.

Nobody has really answered this. In short, yes the Switch does more or less do everything the Wii U could and most of the big Wii U games have been ported. However your Wii U purchases won't carry to Switch as there is no backwards compatibility or cross-buy.

I wouldn't say the Switch can do what the Wii U can do. I haven't been following the Switch modding scene, but you can run a Wii U on up to date system firmware, online etc. while running homebrew enabling Gamecube games (via hdd) pretty risk free. I don't think you can run Wii or Gamecube games on a Switch yet, and even if you can, you'll likely be having to follow 'the scene' closely to avoid online bans etc. I think

My Wii U is getting more playtime than my Switch.

@gcunit
In a very literal sense of course. You can't drop a Wii U disc into the Switch, you can't download all the same games, you can't do the asymmetric gameplay. But in the broader sense? Most of the big Wii U games have been ported, it's just as if not more technically capable and it does the Wii Us biggest party trick, off-TV play, universally and without a range limit.

So no, it doesn't do everything the Wii U could in the same way a PS4 doesn't do everything the XBOne does. But at the same time a Blu-ray player + PVR doesn't technically do everything a VHS Recorder did....

Here's my own must-buy title list (including ports from other consoles):

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Twillight Princess HD
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Super Mario Bros U
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Zombie U
  • Watchdogs
  • Batman Arkham Knight
  • Call of Duty Ghosts
  • Mass Effect 3: Special Edition
  • Assasin’s Creed: Black Flag

So please go ahead and totally enjoy your wonderful console!

Buy some 128gb thumbdrive, not the hdd (it`s smaller, it doesn`t need any cables) . If U wanna go digital, WiiU often have some sales so it`s good way to go. Games ? - Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad and Mario 3d world are a must !!!

Thanks everyone for the answers!

I've been playing Mario Kart 8 and really enjoying it. All of those other games are on my buy list. @gcunit interesting, so that means people are able to buy pre-owned from GS, rip the game, then return the physical copy for a refund? Is that legal, or at least allowed to be discussed here? I'll look into it if the brick chance is low. Also, do you guys prefer the 2.5" USB-powered drives or the 3.5" ones that plug into outlets? I have spares of each, and they are on the approved list, only I read a few topics that said USB-powered devices may shorten the console's lifespan.

@CloudvsRoy Here is some off my Wii U games collection there are alot of great Wii U games out there compared to the Switch. I would use a 3.5" hdd that plugs into and outlet they seem to work better with the Wii U compared to the usb only power hdd. But if you do use a 2.5" hdd you will need to use a y-cable to power it.

$130 dollars? I'd say return it. You can find them a good bit cheaper than that if you don't mind a used one, then use that money to buy more games. Most of the biggest titles on Wii U have been ported to Switch, but not and there are a good few worth getting. Most notably for me, Xenoblade X and Mario Maker. The Virtual Console is also one of the best reasons to own a Wii U, since a similar service has yet to come to Switch... (much to my personal annoyance)

Just curious: Twilight Princess HD is based on Gamecube version? Not Wii? The difference was, as you people already know, the mirroring that Wii version underwent.

Just wanted to say thanks again. I ended up getting all of the games you guys listed (except Shovel Knight and Steamworld Dig, already played those). I really enjoy Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker so far. Haven't gotten into the others yet. I don't know if the system will get cheaper within the next few months, but I'm happy with this purchase. Being able to play anywhere in my apartment with the tablet is pretty awesome!
