Hello everybody,

My name is Tommy and I been making games for about 5 years or so, and last month I got approved by Nintendo to make games for Wii U. I am so happy and excited because since I was 4 years old my dream has been to make games for Nintendo, and now 23 years later its finally happening
Here is some very early images my upcoming Wii U game Swipe Knight.

Swipe knight is a metroidvania game with many unique features and game mechanics. One of the most outstanding mechanics is that you control the character by swiping the touchscreen.

Swipe up to jump and swipe down to slide.
Swipe in the direction the hero is walking to attack.
Swipe in the opposite direction to turn around and walk in the other direction.
Swipe down while jumping to do a down thrust.
And more.

This might sound a bit weird to some of you, but I will post a trailer of the game in about a week or so and then you will understand that it’s not as weird as it seems, its actually really comfortable.

Players can also control the hero with the left analog stick in which work in the same way as the swipes.

The idea came from all these popular mobile games like Cookie run and Subway surf, they have a particular addictive feel to them.
I wanted to capture the addictive gameplay of those games and put it in a metroidvania style setting. The result is something truly unique.
You get the best of 2 worlds, the simple addictive gameplay elements of a casual game taken to a whole new level mixed with the excitement of exploring a vast world, finding new items, fighting huge bosses and all that good stuff.

STORY

Swipe Knight does not only have 1, but 2 stories. The main story which will be about 65% of the game is focusing on how the leader of a cult is trying to resurrect an evil demon who’s soul has been trapped inside a ghost ship.

The other story which will be about 35% of the game, is found in the secret areas and will progress more every time you find a new secret area of the game. So the game has a big emphasis on exploration and secrets to say the least!
As a gamer I have always been fascinated by games with interesting world themes, that’s why Mario Land 2 with all its unique worlds is one of my favorite Mario games.

So even though you will visit more common worlds like a desert, forest, hell and so on, will you also visit worlds with more unique themes like:
Cyberpunk Zone
Boardgame World
30s Cartoon Alley
Survival-horror Mansion
Garden of Love
To name a few.

Most of the worlds in the trailer have been from the more common ones, and if you want to see the more wacky ones then come back here on a regular basis because I am going to post some of them here in the coming updates.
But it’s not just the looks of the worlds that will make them different from one and other, each world will have its own unique set of enemies, puzzles, obstacles and gimmicks.

You probably wonder what crazy gameplay that will make use of both screens at once, right? Well the 2 screens will be used in many different ways, but without saying to much let me leave you with this:

You can control the hero with either swipes or the left analog stick, so it only takes ONE hand to control ONE character. The Wii U gamepad have TWO analog sticks and one touchscreen, and TWO screens. So there will be parts where you are controlling 2 characters separated from each other at the same time, one on each screen.
I don’t want to give away any more of my 2 screen ideas, because I don’t want to see them end up in someone else’s game before I released mine, but hopefully I got you excited by now.

The controls sound awkward but your idea at the end made it sound better...I really like the idea! Good luck making your game! It sounds great!

This looks cool, man! I'm excited to see your game in the future and hope that everything goes well in the development cycle! Keep us posted as I'm sure that some of the other Nintendo Life members would like to see what's up. Is this a one man effort or is there a team behind you as well?

I get that it sounds akward, a trailer which will focus on the gameplay itself will be released within 10days I think when people see that trailer, they will get it.

I will, and I will also try to involve people who like the game under the development, but that will be a bit later on. Glad you like what you see We are a team of 4 people, but I am the only one working with it full time, and thats how I like it:) Coding and graphics is my area, and then the other guys do the music and help with story, game mechanics and much of the ground work.

Nope it is not a runner, but has some of the runner mechanics. I will post a trailer with focus on the gameplay mechanics later this week, hopefully that answers most of the questions people have. Also looking forward to your game this christmas Captain

First of all thank you for taking the time to post this here! This site has a lot of dedicated Nintendo fans and if you do them right by this game it will sell well.

I really like what I see so far and what I'm hearing sounds even better. I wish more devs took the time to do this as it gives us more details as what to expect. Mostly the passion behind your creation. I wish you all the luck in the world from one long time Nintendo to another!

Well, the game is being built for the Wii U with its unique hardware in mind, but it would probably be possible to port about 70% of the game to iOS/Android and PC. Some boss fights and levels will only be possible on the Wii U, and I dont want to limit the game in order to get it out on everything. I guess you could say that Wii U will get the Premium version, and maybe (just maybe) some other systems will get a as good as possible port of the game.

Now that I look at it again, the gorey deaths of those acorns (brains...) are a turn-off to me but that's probably already something that's set in stone at this point so... If the gameplay is fun, than great! The gorey stuff, I usually try to avoid (Mortal Kombat) so all I'm doing is giving a bit of feedback and a suggestion to make it a bit less gorey if possible.

Sounds interesting... Making it fast-paced and combo-centric would make it great!
Also, I agree with @SuperMikey in that it is too violent for the vibe of this game...

The description is interesting, and I like the control idea. But to be honest, the characters and enemies look a bit bland. You might wanna give them more details, and also focus less on patterns (like the Octocactus, the striped pattern looks kinda iffy). Other than that, I'm really interested to see how your game will work out in the end. Keep at it!

Every enemy has its own unique death, thats kinda part of the fun:) One enemey which is headless chicken, explodes into little chicken legs that lands in KFC bucket when you kill him. I just think it makes the game more fun, than just having the same explosion for every enemy or just having them fall down or something like that. I like to mix the cute and colorful world with the brutal and gorey deaths Thanks for your feedback

The game is very early in development, what I am showing here is what I made BEFORE even getting my Wii U devkit(which I got a couple of days ago).
Before that I have been testing the game on a Android device, thats why these images http://tommystudier.webs.com/1.png for example look so upscaled. Now I am just trying to make sure people know about the game and in the end of the week (or very close to it) I am going to go on Indiegogo.com to try to get the game funded.

The outcome on Indiegogo will also play a huge role in how the game will turn out, if I for example only get half of what I need then I am gonna have to skip some worlds I planned to include and might not be able to do everything as detailed as I want because I have to survive and feed my family while making the game. On the other hand if everything go as I want it to go on Indiegogo or even better and I will be given the time I need (or even a bit more) then I will be able to add more worlds and add more details than I originally planned to.

I really appreciate the feedback from all you guys, just know that EVERYTHING you see here is in a very early stage and will look better in the final version.

Wow, I'm so glad your dream came true. Congratulations!

It sounds pretty interesting, but I'd like to give some feedback, if you don't mind:

-The controls do sound a bit awkward.
-The graphics and designs for everything are kind of just...meh. They're not super unique or eye-popping or visually stunning. I would maybe change the style of the game to make it more visual appealing/interesting.

Anyways, those are my thoughts. The game still sounds pretty interesting though. I wish you lots of luck on your game!
