Only thing that annoys me is that they don't do anything different like the developers doing 3D Mario. Change graphics style, gameplay...and...CHANGE THE STUPID THEME MUSIC!!!

Lmao every song they just go "bah, bah!"
lol it was cool the first time, seeing enemies dancing to the music, but now...ugh. lol
A cash grab? Heck one of the games was literaly based around grabbing cash! (The 3DS one)
I would not label it a "cash grab" per se, but I feel they are milking them. And perhaps using them as filler.
"We need a launch game!"
"OH! Make another one of dem New Mario Bros. games!"
"Wut should we add?"
"Hmmm. Think of an animal and make a suit off of it!"
"Genius!"
"But sir! We need new music! Mario music has it's standards, y'know!"
"Hmm... Aha! Add 'bah'! Mmm! More and more bah!!
"You're a lifesaver, sir!"

"Oh, no people are demanding MOAR Luigi"
"Hm. I got it. Make the same game with luigi and a dumb rabbit that holds up 7-Elevens and make all the stages nearly the same but half as long and call it a "stand-alone" on the back of the box"
"Absolute designing genius sir!"
"Thanks. Now get me a coffee."

"This series just prints money!"
"What next, sir?"
"Hmm. Money...money...money...I GOT IT! Why not make one on the other system we have about getting money!?"
"I like it, sir!"
"Of course you do, Smithers"
"Almost finished, sir!"
"Very good, Smithers. What do you immensely creative minds here at this fine establishment have on the table next?
"Well, sir, we were thinking of rewarding players that collect 1 million coins! We were thinking new character, extra wor-"
"A different title screen. We're given' the fans what they want."
"Now they're gonna want to collect 1 million coins for sure!"
I think I would forgive it more if they were particularly great platformers but they really aren't. Solid, yes. Great, noooo. It was a fun nostalgia bomb that's gone on way too long and made irrelevant by both the 3D Land/World games and basically every other new co-op platformer of the past 3 or so years and one of the rare times where I felt there was absolutely zero interest in making a memorable experience as long as the audience that likes it would give them more money from Nintendo. Also, if you want to see nostalgia done right, play Sonic Generations.
I agree that this series needs to stop. The DS and Wii versions were fun. Got the 3DS version, but I got sick of it by then so I never beat it. Didn't seem to be much different. The Wii U version was the first one I didn't buy and I don't plan to. I WOULD have gotten New Super Luigi U, however, if it was standalone on the eShop, not just retail. Not planning on buying any games on discs
I agree with Sean, the series doesn't offend me too much, and the Wii U version was a solid, fun, colourful and beautiful game to play with lots of content and level variation.
But I also agree with the sentiments that a change is soon needed. What can you do with a 2d Mario game though to change it? I'd certainly like a change in the boss fights. It gets a bit tiresome fighting the same 8 guys at the end of each world.
I'd maybe like to see a 2d Mario go "extreme" and really change the formula for each level. I want giant giant sized enemies, upside down levels, levels going from right to left, top to bottom. Heck, even vary the enemies such as giving the goombas turtle shells and have cheep cheeps popping out the pipes instead of Pirahnas. Of course doing all this would majorly risk alienating a giant fan base.
Would it work if this series of games adopted "realistic" environments such as the castles found in Rayman?
I doubt it alienate anyone to make it more interesting. In fact, I think the sales would probably go up if it did, since a significant amount of people are getting tired of all the repetitiveness (as this thread makes pretty clear).

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Going right to left? Now that's just crazy.
