I don't see why everyone is so surprised by this. You can do everything it can do on a computer. Windows has tons of free games, as does Linux. Just plug your PC into the TV and play all the open-source games you want

I'm too lazy to build a htcp and rather have some thing pre built. That and the PC interface e isn't built for TVs. Not sure why p. Gamers don't get this.

Don't have to tell me I'm Nintendolofe's resident Microsoft evangelist. But even then microsoft itself will bbe pushing the xbox running a version of WinRt.
I'd argue that Windows 7 in windows media Center mode was perfect for Televisions as well. Problem is that doesn't entice the average consumer.
And even with windows 8 currently you'd still need to use a track pad as kinect or voice controls haven't been announced yet.

And one of the FAQs explains that "free games" means that there is at least a free demo for each game:
When you say "free games," what does that mean exactly?
We want you to pay only for the games you love. A “free to play” model works when everyone (gamers and game makers) benefits from directly rewarding amazing games.
For gamers, every game will be free to play: what this means is that there will at least be a free demo, or you’ll be able to play the entirety of the game for free but may have access to additional items, upgrades, or other features that come at a cost.
For developers, free to play means that they can set their own prices. Developers know best: There is no better way to sell a game than to have folks that have actually touched the game share glowing reviews with their friends. By allowing some form of free play, we’ll help them do just that. The only reason you used to pay for games before playing them is that you couldn’t try them at the store before you brought them home – it’s a relic of an old way of doing business, and one of the many things about the games business we plan to change.
Today the tech news is that OUYA project got around 3 million USD funds (it needed a bit less than one to take off), so it seems now nobody can stop it, and the devide is not weak at all for 99$:
Four core Nvidia Tegra 3, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage, one USB 2.0, Bluetooth, WiFi, HDMI 1080p and a classic wireless gamepad.
May get one depending on availability and reviews, but few casual gamers humans would know about this, unlike Wii, so it won't be a SERIOUS competition. A bit of a competition, but people aren't going to pass up on the Wii U for it. In fact, the $99 price tag is the main thing encouraging me to get one alongside it.
Given that the fanboys continue to insist that smartphones and tablets are incapable of offering more than $0.99 mini games, I am fairly certain they will never be concerned because not only have they stuck their heads in the sand, they've superglued their foreheads to a 10tonne weight.
I might sleep on this system for a while and wait for reviews before taking the plunge. I'm a fairly loaded man of ignorance that can buy over 100 of these things but I really don't need another device that I may not use anyway so time will tell the story if this is gonna be successful or not
Well, at least it isn't a smartphone platform anymore, despite it running Android. With that sexy looking controller and console, this has to be an indie developer's dream . You guys should check it out. You can't dispute the potential it has. I doubt they even made it to compete against the big 3; rather, it's to provide another option to play video games

And that is where the WiiU comes in place, as it was supposed to be the "other" option against the real big 2. But now there will be two trying to be the "other option" and Android already has thousands of developers on its side.

Except Nintendo is a member of the Big 3. They just deviate rather than directly rival the competition, which Sony and Microsoft seem to do.
Nintendo makes it's consoles have experiences you can't have on other devices, which means if you want to experience the things Microsoft and Sony bring, while still wanting the Nintendo experience, you'll have to buy the Nintendo Console as well, rather than just one console that 'does things better'. I don't know how this will affect the market, but I wholeheartedly doubt it will be a 'rival' for the Wii U.

I honestly think that Nintendo is in a bit of identity crisis at the moment. They want to appeal to the masses (which is awesome). Yet, many gamers lose faith in Nintendo (which is justifiable mind you), and now they are indeed in some competition. While Nintendo intends to position itself as am unusual company, they work like the big 3 and gamers generally perceive them as a traditional console manufacturer.
EDIT: Oh yes, and from a design perspective, developing smartphone games isn't similar to developing console-quality games
I for one dont care about the "NEW" compitor... Nintendo's always had compition.... SEGA from the 80's-90's
All the way to the big three, they know what their doing
That nintndo despite not earning a lot of money still stayed strong?
