You just need to buy a Y-cable. There is nothing wrong with Toshiba hard drives, you just need a Y-cable. (A Y-cable is one that has two USB plugs on one end.)

Or buy a proper hard drive like those Nintendo recomend two years ago. Mine works amazing.

just buy a y-cable.... such a misleading post since i have a 500GB hdd from them and mine works perfectly fine w/Y-cable. So, go ahead and buy it and a y-cable which the latter is dirt cheap.

You absolutely need a Y-cable. They aren't expensive. It's not an issue with the Toshiba brand or the drive itself, it's the fact that the Wii U doesn't support portable drives without a Y-cable. It's a power supply issue. To continue using the drive like you describe will only lead to problems, no doubt about it.

Your other option is a desktop external drive with a power cable. That is what Nintendo recommends.

You already answered your own post. Either buy a y-cable or return it and buy a desktop drive with AC power. I have a portable 2TB Toshiba drive with a y-cable, and it works flawlessly.

Third option is a powered USB hub, but that costs more than a y-cable. Depending on where you live it might be easier to obtain though.

I feel like this thread should be locked for having a misleading title. Problem is on the end user, not the brand of hard drive.

Also allows you to plug other accessories (LAN Adapter, GC Adapter) into the rear USB ports of your Wii U rather than the front ones. Leaving the front ones unused and keeping the front of your TV cabinet clean

I'm also using a 500GB Toshiba drive (with Y-cable) and have had no problems. I download all my games.

Seriously just get a $5 Y-cable and you'll be set.

Don't buy the Y-cable. They cost like $5. That is the same amount of money as almost every Game Boy and NES game on the eShop! If you do have that money, then go buy it... because why not?

Sounds great! He can save that money he could've bought a Y-Cable with to buy an NES game that he can't put on his external hard drive because he doesn't have a Y-Cable.

So ya, a USB hub is probably the best option, but a y-cable works, too. If I would have thought about it, I would have bought a USB hub instead of a y-cable, but it's whatever. I can buy a USB hub, but I wouldn't even really use it for anything anyway.
