Hello people. I apologize but I don't know anything about video games so I hope you guys can help me out. I have a cousin who is disabled and she wants a Nintendo Wii U with those motion controllers for Christmas. She also wants some dance game and sports game (Nintendo Sports?).

I tried to shop for a Nintendo U but I don't think they come with motion controllers anymore? And I can't find a Nintendo U Sports package like the regular Wii used to have.

My question is, besides the console itself, dance game, and Nintendo sports, what do I need to buy? Can I buy Nintendo Wii games for the Wii U? Thank you

Yeah I'm not sure what finances you're working with, but a premium Wii U, Wii Motion Plus Controller, subscription to Wii Sports Club and a Just Dance game on either Wii or Wii U should cover what you want. And yes any and all Wii games work on Wii U so browse to your heart's content with confidence. Hope she has fun with those games, I know I got my fair share of enjoyment out of the Wii Sports craze

Well for a start Wii Sports Club is available as a download. It's basically a free trial and then you can either buy each of the sports individually or buy passes. If you're going to get that then the controller you need is a Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Make sure it's one with Motion Plus which shouldn't be a problem if you're buying new.

Also yes, you can buy Wii games for the Wii U. It has full backwards compatibility. Some are even available as a download so you don't even have to go hunting them down. But again for those games you're going to need a Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Just be aware that online multiplayer for Wii games doesn't work anymore. Oh, and you can also download some NES, SNES, N64, GBA and DS games on the Wii U but those will all work with the GamePad.

Lastly I'd strongly recommend getting a copy of Nintendo Land if a copy isn't included in the box. It's probably the most original "motion control heavy" game on the Wii U. The games in it are a bit more involved than what was in Wii Sports but they're still pretty easy to pick up. Mario Chase in particular.

In terms of sports games, you can either buy Wii Sports Club as a retail disc, or you can download it for free and choose which individual sports you'd like to download. There is also Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, however, that does not contain motion controls whatsoever. Nintendo Land and Game & Wario are great showcases of what the Wii U is capable of (both games use the Gamepad and some activities in Nintendo Land require Wii Remotes), and your cousin is likely to enjoy those as well. If your cousin likes singing games, there's Sing Party, which is really cheap nowadays, and includes a microphone in the box, or there is Wii Karaoke U, which is a free download, but is a subscription based service (paid monthly or annually, I believe). You can't go wrong with the Just Dance games for Wii U. Currently, there's Just Dance 4, 2014, 2015, 2016, Kids 2, Disney Party, Disney Party 2. You'd probably be better off with 2016 as it has the most features of any Just Dance game released thus far, and features a lot of current hits.

Wii games are fully compatible with the Wii U. The only exceptions are those that require the GameCube ports of the launch model Wii (I think the only games that aren't compatible with the Wii U are those that required a dance mat). Apart from that, all games are fully compatible, and there are some Wii games that can be purchased quite cheaply via the eShop, which negates the need for discs.

To be safe, you should have at least one Wii Remote Plus controller and a nunchuk per player. Few games require the Nunchuk nowadays unless you plan on buying a lot of Wii software. There is also the Wii U Pro Controller, which has around 80 hours of battery life on a full charge and is also used with a lot of games. Generally, any game that requires conventional controls is compatible with the Wii Remote Plus and the Pro Controller, while motion-controlled games require a Wii Remote Plus. Wii Party U includes a Wii Remote Plus in the box (the package costs as much as, if not less than, a Wii Remote Plus on its own), and the game is pretty decent, so I would strongly recommend that you buy that as well.

Hello everyone. Thank you kindly for all of your replies.
So according to what all of you said, is this all I need??

Nintendo Wii U 8GB Basic Set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050SVHZO?keywords=nintendo...

Nintendo Wii Controller Plus: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Remote-Plus-Black/dp/B00N4...

Wii Sports: http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Sports-Nintendo-Selects/dp/B004WLRR...

I'll buy "Just Dance" another time. I want her to test the system with Wii Sports first to see if she likes it.

I would recommend Wii Sports Club (the new one for Wii U) as it has online play, improved controls and graphics, and they cost about the same anyway. The version of Wii Sports you've posted is the first one dating all the way back to 2006 (and is very expensive if you plan on buying it at that price for such an old game). Your cousin may be disappointed if you end up giving her a game for an old console on her shiny new Wii U. Everything else is fine though.

There are also themed Wii Remotes (such as Mario and Princess Peach) that are available for around the same price as a regular Wii Remote Plus. To make your gift a little extra special, you may wish to consider one of those instead of the plain black controller.

Buy Wii Sports Club, Just Dance, the motion controller and nunchuck, and throw in an $20 eShop card. That should cover everything, because then she can choose her own game on the eShop.
