Hello.
I found this interesting offer where you can buy wii u consoles without anything, figured the cables and remotes from my old wii all work on the wii u.
so my plan is it to just get the raw console and a classic gamepad.
will this work? do i miss important parts? what for do i need this touchpad controller and can i play most games without it?

thx

@Jonke You need the GamePad for many games and most system features/settings. I am pretty sure the power cord from the Wii doesn't work on Wii U. The Wii didn't have HDMI output for video so you wouldn't get High Definition.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

What @DefHalan said.

They do share the IR sensor but the power cord will be different (even if the same, different voltages) and Wii U needs HDMI cable.

And many games are playable without the gamepad but many need it. Also, system settings cannot be accessed without the gamepad (stupid, I know). Used to be the eShop and Miiverse also required the gamepad but I believe they patched in Wiimote and Pro Controller support.

Basically, it's better to just spend the extra coin and buy the full package.

You should be able to find a WiiU power cable on Amazon, I have seen them go fairly cheap.
Using the Wii TV cable will be fine if you're not going to be using the Wii for a while, if you're planning on keeping the Wii active, I would suggest getting the WiiU it's own cable.
You may need to get the WiiU gamepad, if tthe previous owner has reset the WiiU to factory settings, you'll need the gamepad to set up the console. Although, I bought mine new in 2013, I don't remember there being an option to skip the setup.
