Mine got an update today too. My WiiU also crashed for the first time (system froze with a annoying beep). Hopefully this was a one time event and not related to the update.

This happened to me once, but it hasn't ever happened again.

Had the console since launch & this is a common problem happens mainly when been playing for long periods of time. My guess is the Wii U gets hot & freezes, I've noticed also after awhile of playing my Wii U gets a lot louder & you can really hear it working hard.

Where and how do you place your Wii U? Stuff like that often happens due to poor ventilation.

I highly doubt your Wii U is overheating. From my experience, the Wii U freezes if your internet isn't stable. The Wii U uses Spotpass on a regular basis, so if your console freezes, it means it can't successfully connect to the internet for Miiverse, notifications, friends online, etc, which is necessary for many features of the console.
Besides, if your Wii U was overheating, it would probably just shut off, but not freeze.
Just to be safe though the intake is on the right side of the console and the exhaust is on the back. So make sure that both, particularly the side one, have a good cm or so clearance.

It's not because of a long play session. If your Wii U freezes, it's because the console didn't read the data it needed; either via disc or internet.
3rd parties did a quick work around for 7th gen ports, so sometimes the data on discs doesn't read right, but it kind of depebds on the game.

My Wii U is ventilated fine & I disagree about it being due to the internet as I've disconnected from the internet & still had the problem. Like I said I mostly notice the problem after playing for awhile. It's not as bad as it was when the console was first launched but it's a bug that is still clearly in the Wii U system & not 100% fixed.
This added USB keyboard support based on the notes I saw. I tried it out and it works.
This means we now have an option for text entry outside of the gamepad.
This enables you to enter your password for log in without a gamepad as well as being more convenient for posting messages on a forum. No USB mouse functionality still so you can't change your system settings or use the eshop with out the gamepad still.
I haven't tried in a game yet, I guess I could see if I can name my Link save by typing on the keyboard. Probably not. I would guess the keyboard support is on the OS level and the game would have to enable it individually for it to work.
wasn't Keyboard support standard since the Wii?(I'm sure it could be used on the Wii)
