I think Mario games in general are becoming less memorable
They're not as entertaining to me as they used to be...it's basically the same story every time, similar gameplay, and they don't seem to be changing too much. Super Mario 3D World is probably the second major Mario game that I'm not going to buy, with the first being NSMBU.

The changesfrom Super Mario 64 to Sunshine to Galaxy were all exciting! I couldn't WAIT to buy those games (well with the exception of Mario 64...I was barely born). But I don't have the same level of excitement for this game. I got to play the demo and after playing 3D land, I really didn't see much reason to get the game. I think I'll wait for the reviews before considering this game, but I think Nintendo needs to take the 3D Mario games in a new direction again

I am at least glad that I'm not (completely) an insane person who no one will believe. I don't like being cynical (barring comedy), so while I consider the slow crawl back to greatness for the series (what I hope will happen at least) frustrating, if it means something other than Mario sells, I can't be too mad about it. There's a lot of awesome games I wanna get on Wii U, and I hope they do well so in that regard this is for the best. People just buying the same franchises over and over is kinda stupid and should change, quite frankly. This is almost regardless of how good a franchise is, it's kinda depressing how many people limit their experiences in gaming like that. There was this article on Destructoid about based on experiences working at Gamestop or other similars stores makes it clear that the "gamers who only buy CoD and Madden" are disturbingly enough, actual people. I hate that that's true, and seeing parts of the gaming community do the same with Mario and Zelda (maybe Pokemon too, but that's mostly handhelds anyway...) is just depressing to me considering how it involves series I genuinely love. I hate that people limiting what games they play heavily involves those series, and yes I know it would be something else if it wasn't Mario/Zelda, but still...

You know, they could get away with a new villain and Bowser if they thought about it for a bit.

** Spoilers **

Like how in Mario & Luigi Dream Team, you had both Bowser and Antasma as the main villains, and the former stabbed the latter in the back and went on to become the final boss. So maybe Wart appears, Bowser then appears later... and then Bowser turns on Wart and becomes the main villain. Or the other way around

Damn, I was hoping you'd say "The Cat Suits", in which case, I would break out a very funny VG Cats comic and we'd all have a laugh. But nooo, it had to be something completely baseless since you haven't actually played the full game yet, (and yes, you do need to have played the full game to make a statement like "the levels weren't memorable". That's something you only say after the fact) and now we're in disagreement.

I want Mario games to have an actual narrative again.

Sunshine (my favorite 3D Mario) pulled this of very well; Mario being framed and using the evil doppelganger trope and twisting it into a creative reveal for Bowser Jr. while still providing beautifully unique levels, exciting boss fights, and a great new gameplay mechanic in the form of FLUDD.

[Insert my wall of text about wanting a Sunshine sequel here.]

It seems as though Sunshine's split opinions on it having a story are what forced Nintendo to "dumb-down" the Mario games in that sense. Sure in Galaxy there was a whole backstory to Rosalina, but it was optional, so most probably didn't go out of their way to read about her past.

It makes me think of the type of kids who just skip every cutscene they can wailing "I just wanna paly da game!1!"
