I'm very disappointed.
I downloaded Zelda Windwaker tonight and found out the audio only outputs from the HDMI when you play the game on the TV. Ordinarily this wouldn't bother me if I played at home, but while I'm in Japan I use a projector and it doesn't have any audio outputs.
This was the 2nd game I bought. The first was Super Mario Bros. U, which DID output sound from the mini audio jack on the gamepad. so I wasn't ready for this terrible surprise. I feel this is a big oversight by Nintendo.

It works if you have an HDMI monitor. Or you can try off-tv mode which apparently works as well. But yes it is an oversight, that may or may not get patched depending on how much noise the community makes about it. For the most part, it doesn't appear to be a big deal with most people so your best bet is either a monitor, off-tv or headphones.

How in the world is this your first letdown of the Wii U? I was considering of making a list with all my letdowns.
I'm not very nitpicky on things--or at least I don't let myself be, otherwise I'd just go crazy. But this one hurt because I was really looking forward to playing WW on a projector.
and no, you can't get sound by plugging headphones into the gamepad--at least not on WindWaker. it only works when you play on the gamepad's lcd screen. I guess, to be more precise, I should be disappointed with the game itself, but it's still a significant oversight by Nintendo.
I was actually surprised headphones wasn't an option at launch.
The games I can think of that support headphones are:
VC games
ZombiU(in the settings)
NSMB.U(since it mirrors everything on the TV)
Tekken Tag 2(in settings)
Injustice(mirroring)
Games like Lego City and ZombiU require both screens. I haven't checked Lego City's audio option(if there is one).
I was actually suggesting this at launch, because I didn't have an HDMI receiver at the time, and headphones were my only option for decent stereo.
I'm not really sure if Nintendo will add a headphone only option, though. They figure you'll either have audio output from your TV, or go completely off-TV which ensures audio streaming to the GamePad.

lol. Big oversight. Because one person in the world can't play the game on a projector like he WANTS to (doesn't need to, because there's a screen right on the controller so it doesn't require any additional screens). The first game I got for the Wii U (besides Nintendo Land) was Call of Duty: Black Ops. I was looking forward to using dual screens (one player on the gamepad, one on the tv) but since I didn't have an HDTV at the time, I wasn't able to do it. I was pretty upset about that. But, I can't consider that to be a "big oversight" because I'm one of very few people with the same problem, just like you're in a situation where very few people are affected by this problem. That's just life, man. Not everything is going to work out perfectly for you. All you can do is send them an email, which would probably be more effective than complaining about it here. Just saying.
Big or not, it's certainly an oversight...because I kinda doubt Nintendo would lack such a feature on purpose. Granted, I'm sure I'm sure it wasn't high on their list of things to do, either...
